Book Russian Security Policy in the Asia Pacific Region Two Views

Download or read book Russian Security Policy in the Asia Pacific Region Two Views written by Peggy Falkenheim Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the conquest of Siberia, Russia has been an Asian and Pacific power. The end of the Cold War transformed this entire region's security structure, a transformation that accelerated when the Soviet Union fell apart and was replaced by Russia. Russia faces new security challenges in this most dynamic of regions, which still holds substantial possibilities of military conflict. But there has been a tendency in the West to overlook the new Russia's place in Asia.Among the objectives of the London conference was the intention to remedy this gap in our perceptions and bring to our audience an understanding by both Russian and Western scholars of the threats and challenges Russia faces here and its efforts to deal with those challenges. Thus, these papers focus on Russia's relations with key Asian states and with its efforts to obtain a military detente with the United States and reduce the dangers and threats of nuclear war with the United States. These papers should help to improve our understanding of how Russian elites view Asia and the challenges Russia faces, while at the same time Russians learn how Western analysts view their policy. This enhanced mutual understanding should contribute to the debate and discussion that began in London and facilitate mutual understanding among Russian, Asian, European, and American observers and audiences.

Book The Balance of Power in Asia Pacific Security

Download or read book The Balance of Power in Asia Pacific Security written by Liselotte Odgaard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating the dynamics of balancing patterns in the Asia-Pacific, this book focuses particularly on the contribution of great powers and middle powers to regional stability. Taking the US and China as great powers, and using ASEAN, Russia, Australia and South Korea as example of middle powers, the author addresses the following questions: Do middle powers influence balancing patterns in the Asia-Pacific? Are the United States and China balancing each other in the Asia-Pacific, and if so, by which means? What is the contribution of the English school to understanding balance of power dynamics? The Balance of Power in Asia-Pacific Security makes a persuasive contribution to the debate on the US-China relationship. Interviews with policy practitioners and academics in the region offer a systematic analysis of the complexities of Asia-Pacific security. Providing conceptual insights, this book gives a fresh understanding of the mechanisms necessary to maintain regional stability and explains the implications of US-China power balancing for global security. It will be an important resource for scholars and students of Asia-Pacific politics and security.

Book The New Security Agenda in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book The New Security Agenda in the Asia Pacific Region written by Denny Roy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of security studies is undergoing a major re-evaluation in the post-Cold War era, and this has important implications for the region. The security dangers of the 1990s and beyond are different and more complex than those of the Cold War, and strategic thinkers both in the academic and policy-making spheres must begin to understand the new environment lest they fall into the old trap of planning for the next conflict based on the conditions of the last conflict. This book is designed to survey the new environment, assessing what has changed and what remains the same, and suggesting what types of demands future strategists will face.

Book Engaging Russia in Asia Pacific

Download or read book Engaging Russia in Asia Pacific written by 渡邊幸治 and published by Japan Center for International Exchange. This book was released on 1999-12 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, authors from six countries - China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea - evaluate the prospects for Russia's participation in Asia by analyzing the obstacles to and motivations for engagement. The perception in Asia of Russia as a security threat persists and some bilateral diplomatic issues, such as the Northern Territories issue between Japan and Russia, remain unresolved. But the potential for bolstering energy security in Asia by tapping resources in the Russian Far East and the benefits to Russia of an influx of capital and technology from Asian countries will propel regional acceptance of the principal successor to the Soviet Union.

Book Asia Pacific Strategic Relations

Download or read book Asia Pacific Strategic Relations written by William T. Tow and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive 2002 book is an overview of security issues in the Asia-Pacific. It is also an argument for a strategy that promises to achieve greater regional stability. It argues that current approaches by policy-makers increase the likelihood of conflict. Instead, it proposes that a strategy of 'convergent security' be adopted to build a more enduring and peaceful regional security framework. A concise survey of key approaches to regional security politics, it presents a vast selection of empirical discussion, both historical and current. Assessing the outlook for the three powers most likely to vie for regional dominance - the United States, China and Japan - the book also reviews the prospects for other secondary powers, including Korea and Taiwan and analyses the role of Australia and the ASEAN nations of Southeast Asia. Unique, accessible, authoritative and broad-ranging survey designed for a wide body of analysts and students of contemporary Asian politics and strategy.

Book Regional Security Structures in Asia

Download or read book Regional Security Structures in Asia written by Ashok Kapor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kapor argues that explanations of international relations in Asia in the post-Second World War period have relied too much on the Cold War as a key explanatory factor, and have not given enough emphasis to the useful concepts of 'regional power formation', 'conflict formation' and 'conflict resolution'. The author outlines these concepts and goes on to elaborate on them, and to apply them to three key Asian regions - northeast, southeast, and south Asia - discussing practical strategic issues in an historical perspective and arguing that these concepts, and other concepts which he discusses, are extremely helpful in making sense of the complex pattern of international relations in Asia.
