Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia a Handbook on Commercial and Industrial Conditions The Russian Empire, possessing a greater area of contiguous terri tory than any other country m the world, 18 still m a comparatively early stage of commercial development, although the foreign com merce of European Russia alone, including Finland, amounted to more than $1, 261 000 000 in 1912. The possibilities of trade in this vast territory are little known to the great mass of business men in the United States, and it is with the object of giving a general view of economic conditions in that country that this monograph has been prepared. The total area of Russia, both in Europe and Asia, is square miles, or one-seventh of the land area of the globe, while its population in 1911 was only or about 20 per square mile. This 18 a smaller number of inhabitants ln proportion to its territory than 1s possessed by the United States, where there are 32. 08 persons for each square mile, while Germany has a density of population of 310. 96 to the square mile, France has to the square mile, Austria Hungary 195. 78 to the square mile, and Sweden to the square mile. In fact the Russian Empire as a whole IS only slightly more thickly settled than Norway and Mexico, which average and 19. 7 inhabitants per square mile respectively. In per cent of the population Of European Russia proper per cent of the population of Russian Poland, 12. 9 per cent of the population of the Caucasus 11 per cent of that Of Siberia, 13. 5 per cent Of the population Of entral Asia, and 14. 6 per cent of the population of Finland lived in towns. But Alfred was only one member of a creative and innovative family who built an industrial empire in prerevolutionary Russia. The saga begins with an emigrÉ from Sweden, Immanuel Nobel, who was an architect, a pioneer producer of steam engines, and a maker of armaments, including the underwater mines that were widely used in the Crimean War. Immanuel's sons included Alfred; Robert, who directed the family's activities in the Caspian oil fields; and Ludwig, an engineering genius and manufacturing magnate whose boundless energy and fierce determination created the Russian petroleum industry. Ludwig's son Emanuel showed similar mettle, shrewdly bargaining with the Rothschilds for control of the Russian markets and competing head-on with Standard Oil, Royal Dutch, and Shell for lucrative world markets. Emanuel not only expanded the Russian oil industry but also helped to modernize the Russian navy and commanded a fleet of three hundred ships. Perhaps no family in history has played so decisive a role in building an industrial empire in an underdeveloped but resource-rich nation. Yet the achievements of the Nobel family have been largely forgotten. When the Bolsheviks came to power, the empire, which had taken eighty years to design and build, was nearly destroyed, bringing a sudden and bitter end to one of the most remarkable industrial odysseys in world history.
