The book examines the women who choose clandestine sex work and their clients’ sexual behavior and attitudes toward prostitution and HIV prevention. It also explores the negotiations between promiscuous, migratory men, and the ties of sexuality and fertility that women use to tie them to a male partner. The book argues for effective delivery of healthcare programs accompanied by multi-lateral responses from the civil society, governments, donors and agencies. Book excerpt: Assuming that women’s empowerment would accelerate the pace of social change in rural Nepal, the World Bank urged the Nepali government to undertake a “Gender Activities Project” within an ongoing long-term water-engineering scheme. The author, an anthropologist specializing in bureaucratic organizations and gender studies, was hired to monitor the project. Analyzing her own experience as a practicing “development expert,” she demonstrates that the professed goal of “women’s empowerment” is a pretext for promoting economic organizational goals and the interests of local elites. She shows how a project intended to benefit women, through teaching them literary and agricultural skills, fails to provide them with any of the promised resources. Going beyond the conventional analysis that positions aid givers vis-à-vis powerless victimized recipients, she draws attention to the complexity of the process and the active role played by the Nepalese rural women who pursue their own interests and aspirations within this unequal world. The book makes an important contribution to the growing critique of “development” projects and of women’s development projects in particular.

The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

Book excerpt: In Angola around 80 percent of farmers are smallholders, so the agriculture sector still represents an important source of income, employment and food for a large part of the production. Women constitute the majority of the labour force in agriculture and are critical agents of change in the fight against rural poverty, hunger and malnutrition. In Angola, 4.8 million women live in rural areas and the 38.3 percent of the country’s women have agriculture as their main activity. However, inequalities in access to land, agricultural inputs, training and knowledge limit their contribution to agricultural productivity and economic development. At community level, women have low participation in decision-making. Angola has made consistent efforts to address existing gender inequalities in the agriculture and labour sectors, given the important role that women play in agriculture and the country’s food systems. Although gender mainstreaming in agriculture and rural development sectors is in its early stages, in recent years, progress has been made to benefit women more consistently. This assessment revealed that gender inequalities remain widespread and particularly evident in rural areas, despite the progress made in establishing a legal and policy framework for advancing women’s rights and gender equality.
