Download or read book Global Markets and Government Regulation in Telecommunications written by Kirsten Rodine-Hardy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, liberalization, privatization and deregulation have become commonplace in sectors once dominated by government-owned monopolies. In telecommunications, for example, during the 1990s, more than 129 countries established independent regulatory agencies and more than 100 countries privatized the state-owned telecom operator. Why did so many countries liberalize in such a short period of time? For example, why did both Denmark and Burundi, nations different along so many relevant dimensions, liberalize their telecom sectors around the same time? Kirsten L. Rodine-Hardy argues that international organizations – not national governments or market forces – are the primary drivers of policy convergence in the important arena of telecommunications regulation: they create and shape preferences for reform and provide forums for expert discussions and the emergence of policy standards. Yet she also shows that international convergence leaves room for substantial variation among countries, using both econometric analysis and controlled case comparisons of eight European countries.
Download or read book Chinese State Owned Enterprises in West Africa written by Katy Ngan Ting Lam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the globalization process of Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in West Africa, primarily in Benin and Ghana, based on ethnographical studies. It challenges the dominant vision of "a powerful China in Africa", and argues that the so-called "Chinese business advantages" – monolithic Chinese state and Chinese low cost advantages, are non-viable for sustaining Chinese business development in the continent. Considering the Chinese SOEs globalization process in a relational approach, this book examines how the triple embeddedness (Chinese, African and managerial) shapes the Chinese SOEs globalization process over time and space, in diverse dimensions and among different entities – the Chinese state, Chinese SOEs, Chinese expatriates, the African government, African business partners, African staff, and the African society. It illustrates that the Chinese central state has "retreated" deliberately from its SOE globalization in Africa. The Chinese SOEs and Chinese expats are the major actors in initiating and inventing globalization strategies, facing limited Chinese state support and the African neopatrimonial governance and social contexts. Besides, the personal trajectories (from expatriation to social promotion) of Chinese SOE expats interweave with the globalization-turn-localization of their SOEs in Africa. Rejecting the linear, static and binary vision of "powerful China in powerless Africa", the present study thus emphasizes power dynamics in Chinese SOEs’ globalization process are organic and pluralistic though in certain extent hierarchical –"second-class". Time and local relations are key elements constituting the real Chinese advantages for Chinese SOEs vis-a-vis their ultimate competitors – not Western companies, but other Chinese companies.
Download or read book Meganet written by Wilson P Dizard Jr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So Paulo, Brazils largest city, has more mobile phones than does Paris. The largest phone system in Kampuchea is cellular. In the next twenty years, within one generation, everyone on earth will be able to place a phone call to anyone else anywhere. This Meganet is a patchwork of networks, big and small, local and global, primitive and high-tech, that fit together because they share compatible technologies. Wilson Dizards Meganet is a report on the progress and setbacks in expanding Meganet resources to everyone on earth. He examines not only the advantages, from toll-free numbers and credit cards, but the downsides, from the potential invasions of privacy to the question of who will and who should control Meganet. Dizard describes the likely players: from the oil and utility companies who own desirable rights-of-way to Silicon Valley to emerging innovators in Chile and Germany.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gary Hart has long been one of the nation's foremost experts on national security, combining a deep knowledge of national security policy with first-hand experience of the political realities that influence how America safeguards itself and its interests. In his new book, Hart outlines the fundamental changes with which America must grapple when confronting the current terrorist threat--a threat with no state and no geographic home-base and thus no real target for the world's largest and most sophisticated military force. Hart argues for a security of the commons, emphasizing that the new security will require a shield for the homeland as well as a cloak of non-military security, including security of income, community, environment, and energy.
