Download or read book Rural School Improvement Classic Reprint written by R. E. Lee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School Improvement Houses may be classed among the great conservative forces of civilization. The beginnings of organized society may be traced back to the time when men first constructed for themselves permanent places of abode. The early Christian church insured the perpetuity of its creeds and its forms of worship by embodying these in cathedrals which have endured the ravages of time, and have come down to us as monuments to the wisdom and zeal of their builders. The building of a school house is a serious business. It is a work which cannot be done today and undone tomorrow. It lasts for years and throughout the period of its existence may largely determine the educational activities of the district, and will either help or hinder the whole develoment of the community. It therefore behooves the school board about to erect a home for the children of the district to consider carefully and to build wisely. They should remember that for at least six hours of the day the school house is to be the home of the rising generation. About it will cluster the associations which will brighten or cloud the memories of coming years. The experiences connected with the school building will largely influence the attitude of the child toward education for his entire life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Improvement of the Rural School The improvement of the rural school is, at the present time, one of our most important educational problems. Although it does not present the same aspects in every state, no section is freed from the responsibility of endeavoring to, find its solution. It is not a new problem. Ever since the time of James G. Carter, and of Horace Mann, educators have called attention to the deficiencies of the coun try school. The counts in the indictment which have been brought against it through all these years differ but little, unattractive sites, miserable buildings, insufficient equipment, poorly prepared and poorly paid teachers, inadequate and incom petent supervision, unevenly distributed enrollment, irregular attendance, meager curriculum, and a poorly conducted school. Although it is true that much progress has been made in these particulars during the past three - quarters of a century, and although in certain localities conditions are con sidered fairly satisfactory, the need for reform is more strongly and more generally expressed to - day. Out of an experience of many years as a teacher in rural, village and county high schools, and as a teacher of teachers, have the pages of this book been written; and it is offered to the public with the hope that it may add its mite to the improvement of rural schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plans for School Improvement in Village and Rural Communities, Missouri That men are created equal is unquestioned; that they remain so is sophistry. The schoolboy with shining morning face is at the parting of the ways. If city bred, his school days are spent in costly buildings with modern equipment and under the tuition of experts. The country lad has none of these, and yet his numbers are greater, while from his sturdy ranks come the men who do great things command armies, build industries, separate continents. From the outland, where life throbs strongest, the air is purest, the thoughts cleanest, come these handicapped youths, to engage in the battle of life and win or lose. Download or read book Rural Life and the Rural School Classic Reprint written by Joseph Kennedy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Life and the Rural School This volume is addressed to the men and women who have at heart the interests of rural life and the rural school. I have tried to avoid deeply speculative theories on the one hand, and distressingly practical details on the other; and have addressed myself chiefly to the intelligent individual everywhere - to the farmer and his wife, to the teachers of rural schools, to the public spirited school boards, individually and collectively, and to the leaders of rural communities and of social centers generally. I have tried to avoid the two extremes which Guizot says are always to be shunned, viz.: that of the visionary theorist and that of the libertine practician. The former is analogous to a blank cartridge, and the latter to the mire of a swamp or the entangled underbrush of a thicket. The legs of one's theories (as Lincoln said of those of a man) should be long enough to reach the earth; and yet they must be free to move upon the solid ground of fact and experience. Details must always be left to the person who is to do the work, whether it be that of the teacher, of the farmer, or of the school officer. Download or read book Better Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by George Herbert Betts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Rural Schools The rural school presents the most important problem in American education. In it are more than six million children coming from one great industry, agriculture the most fundamental and important of all industries. Under present conditions this occupation calls for an unusual degree of intelligence and skill. It demands the highest type of business management and industrial ability. And with the success of agriculture is linked the welfare of every American citizen, whatever be his status or vocation. Yet the rural school, the sole educational opportunity of most of our agricultural population, has been grossly neglected. In the midst of universal progress, it has been allowed to lag behind town and city schools. Abandoned to relative inefficiency, it has failed to hold the loyalty and) support of its constituency. The victim of changing social and industrial conditions, it has dwindled in size, diminished in influence, and lost step with the spirit of the times. Download or read book Teaching in Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by Thomas Jackson Woofter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching in Rural Schools The United States Census Bureau classifies as living under rural conditions all persons living in the open country and in towns and villages having less that 2500 inhabitants. On this basis, according to the census of 1910, 53.7 per cent of the population of the United States was classed as rural, and the figures probably have not changed materially since that date. In the last printed report of the United States Commissioner of Education it was stated that, during the preceding year, 58.4 per cent of the children enrolled in the public schools of the United States were enrolled in schools classified by the Census Bureau as rural, while of the 600,000 teachers employed, 60 per cent were employed in these rural communities. Approximately eighteen million children were enrolled in these same schools, and about 95 per cent of these were in the elementary grades. When we turn from a consideration of the United States as a whole to a consideration of the individual States, we find that in 34 out of the 48 States more than 50 per cent of the population was living, in 1910, under conditions classed as rural, and in 17 of the 48 States the number so living exceeded 75 per cent of the whole. In 11 States the number exceeded 80 percent of the whole. In the 17 States in which the population was more than 75 per cent rural, from 75 to 80 per cent of the teachers and children are working in rural schools. Still more, approximately 215,000 of the 600,000 teachers employed in all public schools in the United States are to-day working in one-teacher rural schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School in the United States Another illustration of our uniform quantitative attitude is to be found in the development of our common school course of study from the three R's. That it has been a case of quan titative rather than qualitative enrichment goes without say ing This line of enrichment has run through the interest ing fields of history, geography, algebra, physiology with all of its hygiene and temperance addenda, drawing, object lessons, vocal music, nature study, literature, language work and ele mentary science. Now the loudest cry is rising from every educational assembly for deliverance from the tyranny of this whole quantitative procedure. We have not abandoned our idea] of enrichment, but we can procure real enrichment only through the elimination of all that is unnecessary or antiquated in our present course of study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education: A Complete Course of Study for Modern Rural Schools The average reader omits the preface of a book and seldom reads the appendix. Hence, much of what might properly be placed in these divisions has been included in the regular chapters. Most books of this kind are of very general nature. Our purpose is to supplement those already available with more definite suggestions and outlines for programs and courses of study not only for the academic work, but also for the so-called industrial work, some of which is now demanded in nearly every community. During the last few years education has assumed new aspects, which are reflected from the courses of study. The answers of students and parents as to what constitutes an education and why certain courses are pursued are interest ing. Usually the laboring man wishes his children to be educated so that they will not have to work as hard as he had. The well-to-do desire education for culture and social distinction. Others see the vocational side only. Too often the teacher's idea is to cram the students' memories with facts from books. Without further discussion we might define education as preparation for life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rapp, superintendent, Reading. The slogans Of our county have been for years Stay on the farm, -and The country school of to - day for the country life of to - morrow. The result in the schools has been farm arithmetic, farm geography, elementary textbooks in agriculture, and a demand for the enrich ment of the course of study - for country children, that country Chil dren be taught in terms of their own lives. Realizing that whatever it is on paper, the course of study is largely the teacher, and that enrichment of the course must come principally through enrichment of the teacher, we have labored most for better - trained teachers in our schools.
