Book Achieving Universal Electricity Access in Indonesia

Download or read book Achieving Universal Electricity Access in Indonesia written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia has achieved an impressive 84% electrification ratio, but faces significant challenges in reaching the remaining 16% of its households. This report describes Indonesia’s electrification environment and identifies barriers to achieving universal electricity access. Principles drawn from international best practices such as government commitment, enabling institutional environments, adequate and sustainable financing, and stakeholder coordination are discussed in the context of Indonesia’s energy sector. The report gives recommendations for establishing service standards, streamlining financing, setting appropriate targets, and monitoring and evaluation, as well as near-term steps to help achieve universal electricity access.

Book Electricity Access and Community Welfare in Indonesia

Download or read book Electricity Access and Community Welfare in Indonesia written by Maxensius Tri Sambodo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a synthesis of research findings on energy in remote rural areas in East Nusa Tenggara in Indonesia, demarcating a localised understanding of electricity issues that are relevant to similar community profiles in other developing countries, which are facing similar challenges. The authors discuss several key issues relating to electricity access in the Indonesian context, such as government energy expenditure and policies for geothermal development. The book also presents empirical estimates of the social effects of electricity access. In focusing on an underdeveloped area in eastern Indonesia affected by innumerable problems relating to poverty, the book contributes to related discussions on the first Sustainable Development Goal in proposing possibilities for poverty reduction vis-à-vis improved energy infrastructure. It demonstrates the impact of electricity access on people's welfare. Co-published with the Indonesia Institute of Science (LIPI), this updated edition is a valuable reference for policymakers and scholars interested in the electricity sector in Indonesia and rural areas in developing countries elsewhere. It appeals to specialists researching and working in the energy sector and is also interested in scholars and practitioners focused on sustainable development and Indonesian policymaking more broadly.

Book From Darkness to Light

Download or read book From Darkness to Light written by Maxensius Tri Sambodo and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2016-03-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to assess multidimensional aspects of energy security in the electricity sector. There are few academic literature that assess regulation and governance, availability, technology development and efficiency, environmental sustainability, and affordability dimension comprehensively. This book demonstrates how these dimensions are interconnected. The publication of this book comes at a timely moment when the Indonesian government needs to provide electricity access to more than 60 million people, to speed up electrification ratio outside Java, to reduce electricity subsidy, and to promote green power system. Moving from “darkness to light”, Indonesia needs to strengthen regulation and governance as a basis to elevate other dimensions to move forward.

Book How Better Regulation Can Shape the Future of Indonesia s Electricity Sector

Download or read book How Better Regulation Can Shape the Future of Indonesia s Electricity Sector written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication proposes a new independent regulatory body for Indonesia’s electricity sector, in particular for investment planning, procurement, tariff setting, and electrification. A situational analysis and review of stakeholder opinions strongly indicates that the current decision-making structures in the electricity sector of Indonesia are inadequate. The publication explains the current context and issues in operations and processes. It provides guidance on how an effective regulatory body can be established, including key tasks, legal aspects, and market design.

Book Mini Hydropower for Rural Development

Download or read book Mini Hydropower for Rural Development written by Thomas Meier and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2001 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural electrification enjoys high priority on Indonesia's development agenda. In remote villages located beyond the reach of national electricity grids, mini hydropower offers an environmentally friendly alternative to decentralized electricity generation. Technical assistance programs have successfully introduced mini hydro technology in developing countries but have often failed to attain sustainable plant operation. This book provides insight into the multifaceted conditions under which village communities are struggling to keep systems running. A new approach linking productive electricity use and mini hydro operation is developed which incorporates experiences of market-oriented approaches in small enterprise development. Village communities are no longer left alone after the commissioning of the plants but are continuously provided need-oriented services. The study is exceptional in that the approach is experimentally applied in an actual project involving a village-owned coffee roastery. It is shown that the new approach not only contributes to a sustainable electricity supply but also to village development.

Book The Welfare Impact of Rural Electrification

Download or read book The Welfare Impact of Rural Electrification written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural electrification can have many benefits-not only bringing lighting, but improving the quality of health care, spreading information and supporting productive enterprises. The extent of these benefits has been questioned, arguing that they may be insufficient to justify the investment costs. This book quantifies these benefits. It finds that the benefits can indeed be high, substantially outweighing the costs, and that consumer willingness to pay is generally sufficient to achieve financial sustainability. However, benefits could be increased further by providing smart subsidies to assist connections for poorer households, promote productive uses and further consumer education.

Book The Challenge of Rural Electrification

Download or read book The Challenge of Rural Electrification written by Douglas F. Barnes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Douglas Barnes and his team of development experts provide an essential guide that can help improve the quality of life to the estimated 1.6 billion rural people in the world who are without electricity. The difficulties in bringing electricity to rural areas are formidable: Low population densities result in high capital and operating costs. Consumers are often poor, and their electricity consumption is low. Politicians interfere with the planning and operations of programs, insisting on favored constituents. Yet, as Barnes and his contributors demonstrate, many countries have overcome these obstacles. The Challenge of Rural Electrification provides lessons from successful programs in Bangladesh, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Mexico, the Philippines, Thailand, and Tunisia, as well as Ireland and the United States. These insights are presented in a format that should be accessible to a broad range of policymakers, development professionals, and community advocates. Barnes and his contributors do not provide a single formula for bringing electricity to rural areas. They do not recommend a specific set of institutional arrangements for the participation of public sector companies, cooperatives, and private firms. They argue instead that successful programs follow a flexible, but still well-defined set of principles: a financially viable plan that clearly accounts for any subsidies; a cooperative relationship between electricity providers and local communities; and an operational separation from day-to-day government and politics.
