Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991, essays discuss and analyse rural schooling in its historical, social, and political contexts as well as its educational mission. This book covers historical and social factors, rural education in the field, and the future of American Schooling. The chapters comprise not only an airing of issues, concerns, and findings, but also a guide to scholarship in the areas covered. Book Rural Education Across the World

Download or read book Rural Education Across the World written by Simone White and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-22 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together authors from United States, South Africa, United Kingdom, China, Canada and Australia to provide insights and case studies from across a range of contexts to explore the interplay between the notions of rurality, innovation and education. The book reveals a hopeful and resilient approach to innovative rural education and scholarship collectively and provides important evidence to speak against an often deficit view of rural education. Three patterns are revealed, namely: the importance of place-attentive strategies, the importance of joined up alliances to maximise resources and networks and finally, the need to utilize alternative methodologies and frameworks that have a starting point of difference rather than deficit for any rural initiative or approach. By drawing from international examples and responding in innovative ways to rural education challenges, this book provides an opportunity to share international insights into innovations, interventions and partnerships that promote and support rural education in its broadest sense.

Book Ruraling Education Research

Download or read book Ruraling Education Research written by Philip Roberts and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume brings together a collection of chapters from leading scholars in rural education with the purpose of linking knowledge from the rural education field to the wider discipline of education studies. Through addressing significant issues in the rural education field, the book gives insights from rural education that have general relevance for the wider disciplines of education, and provides up-to-date scholarship in research in rural contexts. This book aims to be a definitive and comprehensive edition of contemporary rural education scholarship that works as a guide for those new to researching in and for rural contexts, as well as actively expand the other sub-fields of education from a rural perspective. It examines the connection between rurality and the other domains of educational research, exploring what a rural perspective might bring to the broader fields of educational research, and how it might evolve them. In its unique approach, this book brings the concept of ‘rural’ to the disciplines of education; chapters regarding the ethics of research in the rural context speaks to a gap in rural education, and provide tools for engaging marginalised communities more generally in educational research.

Book Hearing on the Challenges Facing Urban and Rural Schools

Download or read book Hearing on the Challenges Facing Urban and Rural Schools written by United States. Congress. House. Committee on Education and Labor. Subcommittee on Elementary, Secondary, and Vocational Education and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Testimony given at a congressional hearing on the unique problems of urban and rural schools, the federal role in addressing these problems, and the availability of resources at state and local levels is presented in this report. Representative William Jefferson described the disadvantages of urban schools, compared to suburban schools, with respect to reaching the six national education goals for the year 2000. He spoke in support of the proposed Urban Schools of America Act (USA), which would fund urban school improvement at the local level, renovation of facilities, research and evaluation activities, technical assistance, and staff development. Lois Adams-Rogers, from the Kentucky Department of Education, discussed rural poverty in Kentucky, rural cultural influences on education, the special needs of rural education, the Kentucky Education Reform Act of 1990, and the need for federal aid. Dale Lestina represented Organizations Concerned about Rural Education (OCRE), whose goals are reforming rural school curriculum, developing rural schools as community centers, and promoting the role of rural schools in community economic revitalization. OCRE supported the proposed Rural Schools of America Act of 1991, which would fund early childhood programs, parent involvement activities, school-community linkages, capital improvement, and educational innovation. Superintendents from Tucson (Arizona) and Portland (Oregon) outlined the poor status of urban schools on the national education goals. Also included are charts of the share of statewide expenditures and poverty enrollment for 47 cities and estimated USA grants to eligible cities. (SV)

Book The Condition of Education in Rural Schools

Download or read book The Condition of Education in Rural Schools written by Joyce D. Stern and published by Improvement of Practice. This book was released on 1994 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report focuses on the status of rural education and is intended to provide information to education researchers, policymakers at the federal and state levels, as well as others concerned about issues in rural education. Specifically, the goal is to increase federal policymakers' attention to rural education problems, promote improvements in rural schools, and stimulate further research on rural education. This report documents how rural conditions are sufficiently different from urban ones to warrant being examined independently, and it endorses the hypothesis that a single set of public policies may not adequately address educational issues in rural versus urban settings. National data, mainly from surveys by the National Center for Education Statistics, are synthesized covering the following topics: (1) economic and demographic context of rural education; (2) location and characteristics of rural schools and school districts; (3) relationship between the rural school and its community; (4) policies and programs benefiting rural education; (5) profiles of educators in rural schools; (6) effects of education reform in rural schools; (7) public school finance policies and practices affecting rural schools; (8) assessment of student performance in rural schools; (9) education and work experiences of rural youth; and (10) the future of rural education. The report contains numerous data tables and a section describing statistical data sources and methodology. (LP)

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education: A Complete Course of Study for Modern Rural Schools This book is the outgrowth of a series of lectures on Rural School Organization in the Minnesota state summer schools for teachers and of several revised courses of study planned for and executed in rural schools under the supervision of the author. While there are many books that treat of school organization and management, but few, if any of them, are written from the modern standpoint of an industrialized rural school; that is, a redirected course of study in which a broader and better country life is the ultimate aim. Except from this point of view the academic outlines and discussions probably contain little that is new. Even the division plan to avoid the evils of a closely graded rural school is not entirely an innovation. That some plan to avoid the thirty or forty daily recitations usually found in the country schools must be put into active operation before real efficiency can be expected is admitted by all who are familiar with the situation. The plan here suggested is not mere theory. It has been successfully used by scores of teachers during the last half dozen years. After all, "As is the teacher so is the school." In this period of educational unrest there is need for something more definite to guide the inexperienced teacher who has so little direct supervision, especially the rural schoolteacher. In this connection the section of the book devoted to industrial work should prove helpful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Rurality and Education

Download or read book Rurality and Education written by Barbara Pini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book broadens the scope of the subject of rural education and enlivens the ways in which the subject may be studied. Through textual and visual analysis of a range of sources – including young adult novels, the farming simulation game ‘Hay Day’ and reality television programs – the contributors investigate how the lives of young people in rural spaces are mediated by a range of social locations including class, ethnicity and sexuality. Additionally, through rich and detailed ethnographic work, the book explores the complicated and multifaceted meanings of rural places and examines how these meanings shape experiences of schooling for teachers and students. In doing so, the book embeds the study of rural education in explorations of patrilineal inheritance on family farms, international migration, globalisation and economic restructuring. It aims to start a conversation about the robust and complex ways in which the confluence between ‘rural’ and ‘education’ may be imagined, experienced and researched. This book was originally published as a special issue of Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education.
