Book excerpt: India s rural sector still remains underdeveloped to a great extent inspite of her impressive achievements in the field of technology, science, human resources development, Industry and Green Revolution. The developmental path chosen by Indian planners has failed to evenly spread the developmental benefits in area of health, literacy and minimum subsistence needs. Various social science studies of development processes have either portrayed macro-synoptic scenario largely based upon official statistics or have remained confined to micro level cognitive phenomonologism. The conflicting interest-norm configurations inbuilt into socio-cultural matrices and those generated by developmental inputs have tended to be grossly neglected in social science investigations of rural development processes.

Occupying the space by the rustic women folk is not an easy task though it is legitimate for them. This work focuses its attention on the process of recruitment of the women to the various panchayat positions. It seeks to analyse the pattern of their emergence. This study captures the bases of power that operates at the micro level. The whole analysis is based on the scientific application of Positional, Reputational and Decision-making approaches and the integration of all the three approaches.

Book Power Protest and Participation

Download or read book Power Protest and Participation written by Subrata K. Mitra and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-09-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1992, examines the attitudes of local elites – the hinge between Indian state and rural society – towards protest and participation in development, illuminating arguments about the nature of the state as well as the development process. It looks at the role of local elites in India both as the representatives of the state and of the rest of rural society, and explains their importance in the country’s development. The book deals with the elites’ contribution to the credibility of the state and examines the strategies through which they manipulate the allocation of resources and influence the pace and direction of social change. It contrasts the rural elites in two areas, one more economically advanced than the other. The elites in the first area were shown to be capable of combining institutional participation with radical protest, whilst in the other they tended to rely on state channels to achieve reform. The author concludes that despite the different settings, both groups were informed, active and responsive to political conditions. This contrasts with the conventional view that local elites of the dominant castes oppress the lower ones by obstructing reforms, for reasons of self-interest.

Book The Challenge Of Integrated Rural Development In India

Download or read book The Challenge Of Integrated Rural Development In India written by Gerald E Sussman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1952, India launched a massive and enthusiastic effort to reach the 360 million people in its 550,000 villages with a national program of economic and social reconstruction. Known as Community Development, the program provided an innovative model of rural development for both Third World nations and the aid-giving countries of the West. Although the program achieved its goal of providing service coverage to the nation, its many implementation problems and the lack of quantifiable cost-effectiveness led critics to label it a failure and resulted in its submergence into the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in 1966. More recently, however, partly as a result of the social dislocations following the "Green Revolution," there has been renewed interest in Community Development as the Indian government searches for ways of effectively implementing a strategy of integrated rural development. It is recognized that a repeat of the CD program is not the answer; but an analysis of the program allows the identification of the elements critical to good administration—and political survival. Drawing on extensive interviews with Indian and American participants, this book critically appraises the Community Development program. Dr. Sussman examines the successful pilot project at Etawah, then documents the many problems—organizational, political, and logistical—that were encountered in the attempt to replicate it on a nationwide scale, and that eventually led to its demise. From his analysis emerges the question of what kind of government strategies can best equip rural populations to participate in development. Admitting the difficulties still to be faced, he concludes on a note of guarded optimism based on recent efforts in both India and the U.S. that combine a systems approach with the use of a range of development strategies.

Book Rural Politics in India

Download or read book Rural Politics in India written by Dayabati Roy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the forms and dynamics of political processes in rural India with a special emphasis on West Bengal, the nation's fourth-most populous state. West Bengal's political distinction stems from its long legacy of a Left-led coalition government for more than thirty years and its land reform initiatives. The book closely looks at how people from different castes, religions, and genders represent themselves in local governments, political parties, and in the social movements in West Bengal. At the same time it addresses some important questions: Is there any new pattern of politics emerging at the margins? How does this pattern of politics correspond with the current discourse of governance? Using ethnographic techniques, it claims to chart new territories by not only examining how rural people see the state, but also conceiving the context by comparing the available theoretical frameworks put forward to explain the political dynamics of rural India.
