Download or read book Rural banking The case of rural and community banks in Ghana written by and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2010 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the late 1970s, rural dwellers in Ghana had almost no access to institutional credit for farm and nonfarm activities, and in many rural communities, secure, safe, and convenient savings and payment facilities hardly existed. In response to this situation, the Government of Ghana took several measures to increase access to credit in rural areas, including facilitating the establishment of rural and community banks (RCBs). This brief discusses the history of RCBs, their business model, their services, and their financial performance. It then draws some lessons relevant for others involved in or planning similar initiatives.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural Banking in third world countries is new off-springs from the banking industries whose contributions cannot be over emphasized. This stems from the fact that they have helped in alleviating the poverty menace in third world countries such as Ghana. Most rural banks in spite of their contribution towards helping prospective Ghanaian investors in establishing their own businesses are saddled with a number of objectives, to identify the types of credit facilities, to examine the factors working against the operations of the credit facilities; to evaluate the performance of banks. A number of rural banks in Ghana have been operating outside the confinements of the laws regulating banking and financial institutions. The researcher aimed at collecting data, both primary and secondary using a number of research techniques and methods. Notable among the methods may include: structured questionnaires and structured interview. It was recommended that the research findings would be used to identify risk areas in rural banking and as well as collaterals should worth in value more than the facilities provided by obligors, more importantly the findings of the research shown that multiple borrowing have effect on the profit of rural banks. The research was used as a secondary data for further research work for other researchers. It was concluded that Ghanaians benefited from the activities of rural banks, the researcher entreats all stakeholders in the banking industry who may have a role to play in making the research work a reality, to contribute their quota to the effective writing of this paper.

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility and Financial Performance Amongst Rural and Community Banks in Ghana written by Michael Amoh Asiedu and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the connection between corporate social responsibility and firms' financial performance through competitive advantage and access to finance as mediating variables and the role of corporate governance as a moderating variable in such relationship using rural banks as study case. A sample of 126 banks were selected and data from these banks were analysed using structural equation modeling and hierarchical regression with moderation. It was found that embarking on corporate social responsibility leads to improvement in competitive advantage and gaining access to capital. These are both related to increase in corporate financial performance. The study found that business organisations that practise CSR activities turn to gain a defensible competitive position in their industry. The practice of CSR tends to create access to finance for business strategies, resulting in positive impact on financial performance depending on the efficiency of their corporate governance practices. The study recommends that activities of CSR should be integrated into firms' corporate and business level strategies. It also recommends that rural banks and the banking industry at large should adopt proper corporate governance structures to ensure judicious use of firm resources in order to enjoy improved financial performance.

Book Culturally Aligned Security in Banking

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is an investigation into the unique rural banking system in Ghana and the role of information systems in fraud control. It presents a robust information security and internal control model to deal with fraud for the banking system. The rural banking industry has been noted for poor internal control leading to fraud. This has resulted in poor performance and even the collapse of some banks. The Focus of the study was on the processes used to deliver banking services. To design a protection system, a number of rural banks were visited. This was to understand the environment, regulatory regimes and the structure and banking processes of the industry and banks. Systemic vulnerabilities within the industry which could be exploited for fraud were found. The lack of structures like an address system and unreliable identification documents makes it difficult to use conventional identification processes. Also the lack of adequate controls, small staff numbers and the cross organisational nature of some transactions among other cultural issues reduces the ability to implement transaction controls. Twenty fraud scenarios were derived to illustrate the manifestation of these vulnerabilities. The rural banking integrity model was developed to deal with these observations. This protection model was developed using existing information security models and banking control mechanisms but incorporating the nature of the rural banking industry and culture of its environment. The fraud protection model was tested against the fraud scenarios and was shown to meet the needs of the rural banking industry in dealing with its systemic vulnerabilities. The proposed community-based identification scheme deals with identification weaknesses as an alternative to conventional identity verification mechanisms. The Transaction Authentication Code uses traditional adinkra symbols. Whilst other mechanisms like the Transaction Verification Code designvinternal controls into the banking processes. This deals with various process control weaknesses and avoids human discretion in complying with controls. Object based separation of duties is also introduced as a means of controlling conflicting tasks which could lead to fraud.
