Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant, growing, and highly visible set of female identities has emerged in Thailand known as tom and dee. A "tom" (from "tomboy") refers to a masculine woman who is sexually involved with a feminine partner, or "dee" (from "lady"). The patterning of female same-sex relationships into masculine and feminine pairs, coupled with the use of English derived terms to refer to them, is found throughout East and Southeast Asia. Have the forces of capitalism facilitated the dissemination of Western-style gay and lesbian identities throughout the developing world as some theories of transnationalism suggest? Is the emergence of toms and dees over the past twenty-five years a sign that this has occurred in Thailand? Megan Sinnott engages these issues by examining the local culture and historical context of female same-sex eroticism and female masculinity in Thailand. Drawing on a broad spectrum of anthropological literature, Sinnott situates Thai tom and dee subculture within the global trend of increasingly hybridized sexual and gender identities.

Book Sexual Cultures and Migration in the Era of AIDS

Download or read book Sexual Cultures and Migration in the Era of AIDS written by Gilbert Herdt and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1997-05-29 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual Cultures and Migration in the Era of AIDS is the first demographic anthropological study of what happens to sexual behaviour and the rules of risk-taking in sexual encounters when people migrate from countryside to city, from one city to another, or from one country to another culture. It represents a milestone in the study of cross-cultural sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases. At the foreground of the study are commercial sex and prostitution, sexual tourism, heterosexual marriage and social pressure, and homosexuality and bisexuality in emerging sexual cultures. The volume brings together quantitative and qualitative case studies by an international panel of anthropologists, demographers, and sociologists aimed at better understanding the impact of human movement and mobility on sexual change and fertility.

Book HIV AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine

Download or read book HIV AIDS and the Social Consequences of Untamed Biomedicine written by Graham Fordham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the case of HIV/AIDS in Thailand, this book examines how anthropological and other interpretative social science research has been utilized in modeling the AIDS epidemic, and in the design and implementation of interventions. It argues that much social science research has been complicit with the forces that generated the epidemic and with the social control agendas of the state, and that as such it has increased the weight of structural violence bearing upon the afflicted. The book also questions claims of Thai AIDS control success, arguing that these can only be made at the cost of excluding categories such as intravenous drug users, the incarcerated, and homosexuals, who continue to experience extraordinarily high levels of levels of HIV infection. Considered deviant and undeserving, these persons have deliberately been excluded from harm reduction programs. Overall, this work argues for the untapped potential of anthropological research in the health field, a confident anthropology rooted in ethnography and a critical reflexivity. Crucially, it argues that in context of interdisciplinary collaborations, anthropological research must refuse relegation to the status of an adjunct discipline, and must be free epistemologically and methodologically from the universalizing assumptions and practices of biomedicine.

Book Sex and America s Teenagers

Download or read book Sex and America s Teenagers written by Alan Guttmacher Institute and published by Alan Guttmacher Institute. This book was released on 1994 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although sexual activity is common among teenagers, it is not as widespread, and does not begin as early, as most adults believe. This report provides detailed data and analysis of sex among adolescents. Adolescent sexual activity is grouped in ten categories: (1) Rites of passage; (2) The context of adolescents' lives; (3) Sex among teenagers; (4) Risks and prevention of unintended pregnancy and STDs; (5) Incidence and consequences of STDs; (6) Adolescent pregnancy; (7) Outcomes of adolescent pregnancies; (8) Adolescent mothers and their children; (9) Organized responses to adolescent sexual and reproductive behavior; and (10) Where do we go from here? Although young people's sexual behavior today is broadly seen as problematic, no consensus exists as to what the problem is. Most adolescents have always experienced sex, but in the past it was closely linked to marriage, especially for young women. However, over the last century, puberty has slowly moved to earlier ages, as has the initiation of sexual activity, while marriage has been postponed to later years. Adolescents live in a more diverse country than the one their parents knew -- society, family, violence, and sexual messages differ dramatically from the standards of the previous generation. Included in this booklet are numerous graphs. Citations appear for all data. (Contains over 200 references.) (RJM)
