Book Rupert s Adevntures in China

Download or read book Rupert s Adevntures in China written by Bruce Dover and published by Penguin Group Australia. This book was released on 2008-02-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When China's reformers eased open the communist giant's doors to the world, they found Rupert Murdoch standing outside in his best suit with a bunch of flowers. Used to being courted by those in power, Murdoch made a clumsy suitor. If the billionaire media mogul could swagger into China and add the world's biggest audience to his News Corp empire, he quickly discovered that things worked differently in the Middle Kingdom. The communist leadership kept the 'ultimate capitalist roader' at arm's length. Nonetheless, amid many blunders and much wasted money, News Corp managed to connect China to the world through the internet and to transform its staid television into a popular entertainment medium. But was Beijing simply using Murdoch to help the country modernise and to rehabilitate its image in the wake of Tiananmen Square? Did the panda outwit the fox? Bruce Dover, Murdoch's man on the ground in China for much of the 1990s, delivers a rollicking, insider's account of doing deals at the highest level of business and politics. In this intimate portrait of the impulsive billionaire in his prime, Dover describes fatefully introducing his boss to Wendi Deng - News Corp's future has a Chinese face after all.

Book Rupert Murdoch s China Adventures

Download or read book Rupert Murdoch s China Adventures written by Bruce Dover and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rupert Murdoch, media mogul and global celebrity billionaire, is well-known for his impulsive actions and enormous deals. Prior to his recent takeover of the Dow Jones, Murdoch spent years working to gain a foothold in China. Rupert Murdoch's China Adventures tells this scintillating story, offering insight into Murdoch's infamous News Corp. Beginning in the mid 80s, Murdoch quickly discovered that gaining media access to China was a whole different ballgame than anywhere else in the world. Unlike in the West, the Chinese Communist leadership didn't need the support of the media to retain power, robbing him of his usual leverage, and their ability to regulate and control business was close to absolute. The Propaganda Department was given a watching brief on Murdoch's activities, and he was kept well away from the upper echelons of power. But despite the barriers put in his way, Murdoch's News Corp has still had a profound effect, transforming staid Chinese television into a popular entertainment medium and effectively connecting China to the world through the internet. Insider Bruce Dover paints a personal picture of Murdoch at work, with telling anecdotes of the billionaire in his prime, and recounts how he fatefully introduced his boss to Wendi Deng, Murdoch's future wife. This fascinating book is engagingly written and peppered with entertaining tales of the trials and tribulations of an eccentric billionaire and his interactions with the Chinese government.

Book Historic Adventures Tales from American History

Download or read book Historic Adventures Tales from American History written by Rupert S. Holland and published by GEORGE W. JACOBS & COMPANY. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic Adventures : Tales from American History The camp was very busy from six to seven o'clock; the women prepared breakfast; the tents were packed away, the wagons loaded and the oxen yoked and fastened to their owners' wagons. Each of the two divisions had about sixty wagons, and these were separated into sixteen platoons. Each platoon took its turn at leading, and in this way none of the wagons had to travel continually in the dust. By seven o'clock the corral was broken up; the women and children had found their places in the wagons, and the leader, or pilot as he was called, mounted his horse and was ready to lead the way for the day's journey. A band of young men who were not needed at the wagons, well mounted and armed, would start on a buffalo hunt, keeping within easy reach of the caravan and hoping to bring back food for the night's encampment. At seven o'clock the trumpet sounded the advance, and the wagon that was to lead for that day slowly rolled out of the camp and headed the line of march. The other wagons fell in behind it, and guided by the horsemen, the long line commenced its winding route through the mountains.

Book Eminent Elizabethans

Download or read book Eminent Elizabethans written by Piers Brendon and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What links Margaret Thatcher, Rupert Murdoch, Prince Charles and Mick Jagger? Each have illuminated our Elizabethan age in their own, inimitable, way. Margaret Thatcher - the first female Prime Minister, who dedicated herself with messianic zeal to breaking the mould of post-war British politics Rupert Murdoch - the billionaire media mogul whose empire, built on an ethical void, has polluted the channels of communication from London to Sydney, from New York to New Guinea Prince Charles - the royal dilettante whose erratic exploits shook the throne and put his own succession to it at risk Mick Jagger - lead singer of the Rolling Stones, who embodied the sixties counter-culture of sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll yet aspired to be a gentleman and accepted a knighthood at the behest of Tony Blair. The sequel to Brendon's bestselling Eminent Edwardians, Eminent Elizabethans is written in the same witty, ironic and irreverent style and reveals how each one played out a major theme in the new Elizabethan medley. Each portrait vividly and vitally captured through pungent anecdote, piquant quotation and mordant commentary. In short, these brilliant miniatures are as entertaining as they are illuminating. Book What Would Ben Graham Do Now

Download or read book What Would Ben Graham Do Now written by Jeffrey Towson and published by FT Press. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As originally conceived by the legendary Benjamin Graham, traditional value investing involves purchasing relatively stable stocks and companies at a percentage below their intrinsic value. But this approach contains many hidden, U.S.-centric assumptions that simply don’t work well in today’s high-growth emerging markets. In this book, leading global value investor Jeffrey Towson extends and modernizes value investing, helping you apply its core principles while you access tremendous opportunities available in today’s fastest-growing markets. Towson introduces the powerful Value Point system that grows out of his experience on the elite investing team selected by Prince Alwaleed, the "Arabian Warren Buffett." While retaining Graham’s relentless focus on price and quality, he shows how to integrate three crucial additional forms of value into your stock assessments: the value of political access in a government-infused investment world, the value of reputation in a world of colliding markets, actors and biases, and the value of capabilities in a multi-local world. Building on these techniques, Towson presents a complete investment playbook for the next five years. Next, he shows how to invest for the next twenty years—successfully navigating the titanic market collisions that will batter investors who aren’t prepared for them.

Book The Highwaymen

Download or read book The Highwaymen written by Ken Auletta and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-09-07 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A struggle is taking place--not just among corporate titans, but among entire industries. At stake is control of the world's fastest-growing industry: communications. The contestants are Hollywood studios, television networks, and cable, telephone, computer, publishing, and consumer-electronics companies. All are vying to collect a toll on the information superhighway. And as they jockey for control, they tread on volatile ground, as one fixation after another (cable, interactive TV) is dumped in favor of the next (satellite, the Internet). There is no better account of this turmoil than the one provided here by Ken Auletta, bestselling author of Three Blind Mice ("the best book ever written on network television"*) and Greed and Glory on Wall Street, who for five years has brilliantly tracked the communications industry for The New Yorker. Auletta's access to the principal players is unparalleled (six days with Rupert Murdoch, summit meetings with John Malone), and his grasp of the issues--from boardroom politics to regulatory and technological pressures--is unmatched by any other journalist. In this riveting collection of his best pieces Auletta takes the reader on a behind-the-scenes tour of such companies as Disney, Viacom, Microsoft, Time Warner, and Telecommunications, Inc., and keenly chronicles the vanities and visions of the new Highwaymen--Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner, Michael Eisner, Sumner Redstone, Bill Gates, and more. Just as Three Blind Mice was heralded as "the new bible of the broadcasting business," The Highwaymen will be received as an indispensable guide to the future of this explosive new world. * Frank Stanton, former president of CBS
