Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rupert Brett: The Story of a Modern Experiment The sad thing is that none of these beginnings (quite excellent in themselves) will fit in with my story. The tmily history and previous doings of my here are pointless and unnecessary. The scenery method, too, is impossible, for we begin at the corner of a street, and, even though the street is in Milan, we cannot drag in the blue Italian sky, as the day I want you to picture is dull and cloudy. But a start must be made, So let' us take a plunge and hope for the best. On a certain dull April afternoon in Milan two persons might have been seen waiting in the Corso Venezia for the Monza tram. The elder was aged thirty-two and of middle height; his short beard and coarse moustache only partly hid the mouth of a kindly cynic dark, wavy. Hair crowned a thoughtful brow, and fire creed' of an idealist shone out from the whdows of his eyes. His companion was a boy of fourteen, slender and refined, not as yet touched by the worldliness of Eton and that spoiling and flattery to which wealth and position appear to condemn a man. Book excerpt: In this fascinating insider’s account, an American woman who became an investor alleges that irresponsibility, incompetence, greed, and fraud at Lloyd’s, the world’s most glamorous insurance enterprise, have caused the company to lose $12 billion in the last ten years. Lloyd’s of London is not simply an insurance company; it is a society comprising thirty thousand Names (roughly 10 percent of whom are Americans)—private individuals like Elizabeth Luessenhop who accepted the risk of unlimited liability and pledged all their wealth to backing the insurance policies written by Lloyd’s. The beauty was that the Names didn’t have to put up any money to receive their profit share. As long as the premium calculations were sound, everybody prospered. But the 1980s were bad years for Lloyd’s—and for the Names who backed its business. It was also a time when the Society of Names grew by 50 percent to cover the disastrous losses the company was beginning to incur. Risky Business, written with veteran financial writer Martin Mayer, is a detailed account of how the mismanagement of Lloyd’s has affected thousands of American investors who, like Luessenhop, sought low-risk, long-term security. Luessenhop and Mayer take us inside a unique business institution and show us that the ramifications of a possible Lloyd’s failure will be severe—and felt worldwide.

Book The Life Campaigns of General Hughie Stockwell

Download or read book The Life Campaigns of General Hughie Stockwell written by Jonathon Riley and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2006-10-19 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The career of General Hugh Stockwell culminated in the ill-fated Suez Operation of 1956 but no stigma can attach to him for this. It was a military success but a political nightmare which resulted in the fall of Prime Minister Eden, the lowest point in relations between the Western allies, the departure of France from the NATO military structure and the huge loss of British national confidence. Stockwells career up to that point had been exemplary. Although commissioned into the Welch Fusiliers he had fought in Norway 1940, commanded the Special Training Centre at Lochailort and 2nd battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 29 Independent Brigade during the successful invasion of Madagascar in 1942. He was a brigade and divisional commander in Burma and commander of 6 Airborne Division in Palestine before becoming Commander Land Forces during the Malayan Emergency under Templer. After the Suez debacle he went on to be Adjutant General and Deputy SACEUR during the height of the Cold War (Cuban missile crisis and erection of Berlin Wall). This is a timely biography of a soldier who was at the heart of the action during the Second World War and the turbulent post-war years

Book excerpt: Near-naked, flagrantly male, the Minotaur loomed out of the dark places of Greek mythology. Roaring, bull-headed, the creature advanced. The razor-sharp Cretan axe swung murderously, slicing through the air, through flesh, through bone. One by one its enemies died. Out of the past too came the plague – long-dormant seeds awakening to destroy. The victims would be legion, their deaths horrible. Yet behind the killing lay a plan, a purpose. A malign twentieth-century intelligence was calling up this hideous visitation.
