Book Running to Duncan s Field

Download or read book Running to Duncan s Field written by W.B. Cannon and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Student and teacher. Owner and pet. Frank Boxer and Duncan Cannon are both teachers: Boxer, an English teacher of seniors at Pines Environmental High School, and Duncan, Frank’s sixteen-year-old dachshund, whose life and fast-approaching departure from this world teach Frank far more than he ever expected. This is the poignant and yet intriguing story of a dog, a teacher, and an oppressive education system that keeps them both fighting for love, for life—and for each other, emotionally, spiritually, and in every other way in which dogs and humans connect. Duncan and Frank’s journey, both through the natural parks that beckon them, and through the re-creation of the most important nation on earth, the Imagine Nation, will pull you in and tug at your heartstrings, long after you have turned the final page. Call this an “educational love story,” if love means never having to say, “Sit down!” or “Play dead!” So, first, take your own dog for a long walk, and then settle in with Running to Duncan’s Field to experience the warmth, love, and strength of the bond between a man and his beloved dog.

Book The Oklahoma Football Encyclopedia

Download or read book The Oklahoma Football Encyclopedia written by Ray Dozier and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2006 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oklahoma Football Encyclopedia is an historical description of every University of Oklahoma football game from the beginning in 1895 through 2004. Learn how the team got its start and how coach Bennie Owen laid the foundation for the Sooners to become one of the most respected teams on the college football scene.Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer and Bob Stoops later directed the Sooners to college football's elite prize. Wilkinson was a great teacher of the Split-T formation, which guided the Sooners to three national championships, 72 consecutive conference games without a loss and a major college winning streak -- a record that may never be broken. Switzer, a master recruiter, implemented the Wishbone formation, which brought another three national titles and 12 conference crowns to Norman. After the Sooner football program had dropped to mediocrity status, Stoops turned the program around and won the national championship in his second year at the helm. This book provides insight into "Sooner Magic." Many OU football teams appeared to have a supernatural force carry them to victory when victory was not assured. Was it sleight of hand? Smoke and mirrors? No, just pure talent and inspiration helped push the Sooners to the overwhelming tradition the teams have displayed on the gridiron.

Book Escaping the Ordinary

Download or read book Escaping the Ordinary written by Lorna Almonds-Windmill and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Gentleman Jim is a special forces hero – and he is one of mine too." Sir Ranulph Fiennes, OBE The trailblazing sequel to Gentleman Jim: The Wartime Story of a Founder of the SAS. Following his death-defying Second World War, Gentleman Jim Almonds would never settle to an ordinary job. The SAS was disbanded but as a thirty-year-old Captain, he still hungered for adventure. After training Emperor Hailie Selassie’s Army in Ethiopia, he went as Second-in-Command of a bandit-chasing outfit in the new ‘Wild West’ of Eritrea. He was on active service in so-called peacetime. Atrocities and killings were common, but British justice was swift during a race against time as Almonds brought terrorism under control before the implementation of a United Nations decision to federate Eritrea with Ethiopia. Meanwhile, he embarked on personal adventuring and exploration alone in the wilds, rivers and highlands of Ethiopia, sometimes coming close to death. He was still the great escaper. The SAS reformed in Malaya and Almonds ran straight to the battle again. Back with the Regiment, he parachuted into the jungle to clear communist terrorists out of Malaya. In the early days of the Malayan Emergency, he improvised insertion techniques, close quarter combat training and led the long slow marches out. The success of this British campaign has been largely unsung – until now. In Singapore, Almonds took time out to design and hand-build boats in which he and his family sailed around the Straits of Johor. Another opportunity took him to the Gold Coast as a Major in the West African Frontier Force. He witnessed Independence as the British Union Flag was lowered and Ghana was created. He built a riverboat and navigated the mighty Volta River, before it was dammed, through dense equatorial jungle from Yeji to the sea. He even built, by hand (no power tools), a thirty-foot ocean-going ketch – designed and memorized whilst in an Italian Prisoner of War camp. He sailed out into the mid-Atlantic and home to England. He had no modern steering aids, no health and safety and no radio – yet an uncanny sense of direction. In the dog days of Empire, the story captures the snapshot detail of the many countries he visited during his three-month intercontinental voyage. The account is set in a meticulously researched context, fully sourced and contains a comprehensive index, maps and glossaries.
