Book Approaches to Grammaticalization

Download or read book Approaches to Grammaticalization written by Elizabeth Closs Traugott and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of grammaticalization raises a number of fundamental theoretical issues pertaining to the relation of langue and parole, creativity and automatic coding, synchrony and diachrony, categoriality and continua, typological characteristics and language-specific forms, etc., and therefore challenges some of the basic tenets of twentieth century linguistics. This two-volume work presents a number of diverse theoretical viewpoints on grammaticalization and gives insights into the genesis, development, and organization of grammatical categories in a number of language world-wide, with particular attention to morphosyntactic and semantic-pragmatic issues. The papers in Volume I are divided into two sections, the first concerned with general method, and the second with issues of directionality. Those in Volume II are divided into five sections: verbal structure, argument structure, subordination, modality, and multiple paths of grammaticalization.

Download or read book Flying to Norway Grounded in Burma written by Goronwy ‘Gron’ Edwards and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Royal Air Force pilot recounts his experiences on the front lines of WWII in both Europe and the Pacific in this fascinating military memoir. In 1936, Goronwy “Gron” Edwards joined the Royal Air Force on a Short Service Commission. After gaining his wings, he joined No. 233 General Reconnaissance Squadron and flew the Avro Anson, a hastily modified twin-engine aircraft. He later flew the Lockheed Hudson on reconnaissance patrols along the Norwegian coast. Searching for German capital ships hiding in the Fiords, Edwards also came up against Luftwaffe seaplanes—and won a Distinguished Flying Crossed for his valor during the Norwegian campaign. After becoming short-sighted and night-blind, Edwards was posted to the Navigational School at Cranage in Cheshire before qualifying as a Specialist Armament Officer. In September of 1944, he traveled to Maniur, India, where he became the Armament Officer of No. 221 Group. With the Japanese in retreat the group moved to Burma, where Edwards commanded the RAF advance party.

Book excerpt: Here are the voices and visions from a world having need of an angel—most of all an angel of reality to help us see the Earth again, its people, and objects, to hear its tragic drone, and to recognize what it is to be human. The writing ranges from Burma/Myanmar to South Asia, China, Central America, Africa, and the U.S. From the oration of Frederick Douglass in the 1850s and the reportage of Walter F. White in the Jim Crow South during the 1920s. From the Apache genocide in the American Southwest, to the displacement of Rohingya in Burma, and the massacre of Tutsi in Rwanda. Despite the dark reality that the authors record, we recognize, as artist Claudia Bernardi says, “that life is worth living, no matter what." In the Silence is the Winter 2022 (34:2) issue of Mānoa. It features photographs of the Rohingya people by George Constantine. Alok Bhalla is a scholar, translator, and poet based in Delhi, India. Book Airmen s Incredible Escapes

Download or read book Airmen s Incredible Escapes written by Bryn Evans and published by Pen and Sword Aviation. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harrowing true stories of WWII Allied airmen who were shot down and survived, with maps and photos included. Allied air power made a major, arguably decisive, contribution to victory in the Second World War both in the European and Pacific theaters. But the cost in men and machines was horrific, with Bomber Command suffering 50% aircrew casualties. While many perished, others—shot down over enemy territory or water—survived only after overcoming extraordinary danger and hardship. Their experiences often remained untold, not just for the duration of the war but for many years. In this book, Bryn Evans has gathered together a wealth of unpublished stories from airmen of many nationalities, be they British, Commonwealth, or American. Some involve avoiding or escaping from capture, others surviving against all the odds, braving extreme elements and dodging death from wounds, drowning, or starvation. Importantly, the accounts of those who survived the battle in the skies cheating the enemy and the grim reaper give us a chilling insight into the fate of the many thousands of brave young men who were not so fortunate. The result is an inspiring and gripping read which bears testimony to human courage and resilience.
