Book After Broadcast News

Download or read book After Broadcast News written by Bruce A. Williams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new media environment has challenged the role of professional journalists as the primary source of politically relevant information. After Broadcast News puts this challenge into historical context, arguing that it is the latest of several critical moments, driven by economic, political, cultural and technological changes, in which the relationship among citizens, political elites and the media has been contested. Out of these past moments, distinct 'media regimes' eventually emerged, each with its own seemingly natural rules and norms, and each the result of political struggle with clear winners and losers. The media regime in place for the latter half of the twentieth century has been dismantled, but a new regime has yet to emerge. Assuring this regime is a democratic one requires serious consideration of what was most beneficial and most problematic about past regimes and what is potentially most beneficial and most problematic about today's new information environment.

Book Discreet Indiscretions

Download or read book Discreet Indiscretions written by Jörg R. Bergmann and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although discourse theory tends to draw upon lofty examples, Discreet Indiscretions draws instead on one many consider inconsequential. Bergmann treats daily gossip, both friendly and malicious, as the genre of everyday communication and thereby in need of serious analysis. Utilizing discourse theory and ethnomethodology, this study shifts among several kinds of terrain: the sociology of language, the sociology of knowledge, and the sociology of culture. It rests on widespread individual observations on gossip in the existing literature of social science and on the investigation of real gossip recorded in conversations in the field, and reproduced here as transcribed segments. By exploring the complex relations of friendship and loyalty with respect to transmitting knowledge about the personal affairs of others, he develops his thesis: that gossip should be defined not as a control mechanism, but rather as the social organization of discreet indiscretions.

Book Rumor and Communication in Asia in the Internet Age

Download or read book Rumor and Communication in Asia in the Internet Age written by Greg Dalziel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New communication technology has transformed the way in which news about key events is communicated. For example, in the immediate aftermath of catastrophic events such as the Mumbai attacks or the Japanese tsunami, partial accounts, accurate and inaccurate facts, rumour and speculation are now very rapidly disseminated across the globe, often ahead of official announcements and formal news reporting. Often in such situations rumours take hold, and continue to characterise events even after a more complete, more accurate picture eventually emerges. This book explores how such rumours are created, disseminated and absorbed in the age of the internet and mobile communications. It includes a wide range of examples and, besides considering the overall processes involved, engages with scholarly debates in the field of media and communication studies.

Book Rumors of Indiscretion

Download or read book Rumors of Indiscretion written by Lawrence J. Nelson and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation In March 1929 a questionnaire was distributed among University of Missouri students to measure their attitudes toward marriage. Students were instructed to answer the questions as best they could, then drop their responses into any campus mailbox for delivery to the Bureau of Personnel Research. Rumors of Indiscretion explores how a college senior's psychology class project, a seemingly innocuous questionnaire, could cause a statewide uproar that attracted national attention. The questionnaire, quickly brought to the notice of the University of Missouri's dean of women, soon found its way into the university president's office, the local media, and even the Missouri legislature. Many people, never having read the questionnaire, were forced to rely on rumors or excerpts in the newspapers about what it actually contained. Yet, a cry arose for the expulsion of the students and professors responsible for this, as one headline labeled it, "filthy questionnaire." The controversy surrounding the questionnaire drew, lines between young and old, with the rising generation challenging the Victorian ideas of those who were frightened by this coming of age of America during the Jazz Age. Nelson brings out the historical significance of this episode by placing it into two contexts: the history of the University of Missouri and the "culture war" in America during the 1920s. He argues that the 1920s were a time of continuity as well as change in Missouri and the United States. What was actually lost was Victorianism and its mandate for an orderly culture in which each member had a sharply defined role, violations of which carried societal consequences. The youth of this time rebelled against theconstraints of such a society. Many sought change, but few were what would later be called radicals. Nelson uses the University of Missouri episode to demonstrate that while Victorianism's unrealistic notions were lost, tradition.

Book excerpt: From an award-winning star of Signet Regency Romances comes a delightfully comedic tale of two lovers at odds with each other in every way… IT WAS PROVING QUITE HARD TO SEDUCE A WOMAN WITH HER MOTHER NEARBY, MUCH LESS A COOK AND NANNY! Though barely out of the schoolroom, Melody Ashton was determined to save her family from scandal. Her poor Mama was suspected of pilfering contributions sent for several “orphans”—actually the illegitimate children of the town—placed in her care. To make matters worse, the infuriatingly handsome Lord Coe had accused them all of blackmailing his sister, whose child resided with them. After such rudeness, his offer to make Melody his mistress was the outside of enough. Ignoring all lessons learned in Mingleforth's Rules of Polite Decorum, she told the rake exactly what he was: a reckless reprobate, debauched womanizer, self-righteous sapskull and bullying buffle-headed bounder. Lord Coe was quite confused. Never had a conquest proved so difficult. And never had he feared he was falling so helplessly in love... Minor Indiscretions previously appeared in Lady In Green and Minor Indiscretions.

Book Linguistic Analysis of Literary Data

Download or read book Linguistic Analysis of Literary Data written by Fareed Hameed Al-Hindawi and published by Anchor Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary data is supposed to reflect real life situations and is at the same time written in a style of writing that is considered as highly elevated. Such reasons have prompted the contributors to this book to deal with this type of data. Such attempts range from semantics to stylistics and pragmatics. This book introduces linguistic analyses of literary data from different points of view. This involves dealing with various linguistic topics and different types of literary data. Hence, many models are presented to analyze the linguistic aspects of those topics in the light of the genre in which those topics are undertaken. Accordingly, different results are yielded from those analyses and this makes each type of analysis distinct from the other ones. It is hoped that this work will be a useful source to all those – whether theoretically, practically, or both – interested in linguistics, pragmatics of literature, applied linguistics and literary stylistics.

Book Mortal Sins Sex Crime and the Era of Catholic Scandal

Download or read book Mortal Sins Sex Crime and the Era of Catholic Scandal written by Michael D'Antonio and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Publishers Weekly Best Nonfiction Book of 2013 A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2013 An Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime Nominee An explosive, sweeping account of the scandal that has sent the Catholic Church into a tailspin -- and the brave few who fought for justice In the mid-1980s a dynamic young monsignor assigned to the Vatican's embassy in Washington set out to investigate the problem of sexually abusive priests. He found a scandal in the making, confirmed by secret files revealing complaints that had been hidden from police and covered up by the Church hierarchy. He also understood that the United States judicial system was eager to punish offenders and those who aided them. He presented all of this to the American bishops, warning that the Church could be devastated by negative publicity and bankrupted by its legal liability. They ignored him. Meanwhile, a young lawyer listened to a new client describe an abusive sexual history with a priest that began when he was ten years old. His parents' complaints were downplayed by Church officials who offered them money to go away. The lawyer saw a claim that any defendant would want to settle. Then he began to suspect he was onto something bigger, involving thousands of priests who had abused countless children while the Church had done almost nothing about it. The lawsuit he filed would touch off a legal war of historic and global proportions. Part history, part journalism, and part true-crime thriller, Michael D'Antonio's Mortal Sins brings to mind landmark books such as All the President's Men, And the Band Played On, and The Informant, as it reveals a long and ferocious battle for the soul of the largest and oldest organization in the world.
