Download or read book A Learning Community of Reflective Teachers written by Neeraja Raghavan and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers possess a wealth of untapped wisdom and valuable experience. Whether it’s in matter of educational policy, curriculum development or textbook selection, teachers carry a trove of information and insights to share. Traditionally, teacher development has been driven by administrators of schools, and it often takes the form of a ‘mentor’ teaching the staff of a school. But what happens when teachers across different locations collaborate and learn together? This volume documents such an initiative, sparked off by the Covid-19 pandemic, which brought people together online. It underscores the power of teachers debating, discussing, and learning from each other. Based on an Indian experience, the book addresses a range of issues teachers and educators face across the world — encompassing pedagogy, classroom management, school culture and teacher development. A unique story of community building and teacher education, this book also contains key outcomes and insights which take us through their action research projects and showcases a model of teacher development that can be adopted by interested readers. Above all, it brings out the crying need for a teacher’s voice to be heard — for far too long, teachers have been mere implementers of decisions taken by policy makers or managements of schools. By means of networking communities such as the one described in this book, the transformation of teachers going from whispers to resonance is greatly amplified. An important intervention in the domain of teacher development, this volume will be of great interest to students, researchers and practitioners of education, teacher education, and sociology of education. It will also be useful for teacher trainees, academicians, teacher educators, policymakers, schoolteachers, curriculum developers, teacher training institutes, and universities offering teacher education programs.

Download or read book Teacher Performance in Bihar India written by Shabnam Sinha and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers and Teacher Performance in Bihar: Implications for Teacher Education is a study undertaken in the low income state of Bihar in India to create effective teacher perfomance measuring standards. Undertaken as a World Bank and Govt. of Bihar collaborative initiative to study has developed benchmarks against which teachers’ performance were assessed so that the quality of pre-service training and continuous professional development can be reviewed and improved. These teacher performance standards track (i) teacher subject knowledge; (ii) classroom teaching; and (iii) time on task. These inputs and index based scores of teacher performance feed into and inform the development of Bihar’s teacher training strategy. This study undertaken by the ASER Center of Pratham explores a set of interrelated factors that influence how teachers teach. Designed as a series of data collection exercises that were conducted between July 2013 and December 2014, the study covered 400 schools and over 2200 teachers tracked during visits to each school. The study uses teacher surveys and classroom and school observations methods. It evaluates teachers’ subject matter knowledge, ability to communicate as well as their ability to learn from children’s work. The findings generated by the study provide significant inputs and suggestions for designing future teacher training and teacher professional development programs. The research potentially has utility not only in India but more widely to influence teacher policy reform, identifying cost effective financing strategies, developing accountability measures for effective management of teacher education.
