Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At long last, an accessible little book that focuses on the teachings of Rumi's teacher and inspiration, Shams of Tabriz. There are many books on Rumi and many translations of his works and yet most readers are unaware of how Rumi became a mystic. Shams, an Arabic word that means the sun, was the catalyst that converted the rather resolute and ascetic Rumi, the cleric and teacher, into Rumi, the passionate disciple of the religion of love. He was the agent of the propulsive mystical energy that transformed Rumi the reticent into Rumi the ecstatic poet. Rumi lovers, spiritual seekers, and devotees of the mystical path will meet this little book of wisdom and mystical secrets with enthusiasm. I shall not place you in my heart For you may get hurt by its wounds. I won't keep you in my eyes For I may belittle you and expose you to the ridicule of common men. I will hide you inside my soul, not in my heart or in my eyes, so that you may become one with my breath.

Book The Forty Rules of Love

Book excerpt: In this lyrical, exuberant tale, acclaimed Turkish author Elif Shafak, author of The Island of Missing Trees (a Reese's Book Club Pick), incarnates Rumi's timeless message of love The Forty Rules of Love unfolds two tantalizing parallel narratives—one contemporary and the other set in the thirteenth century, when Rumi encountered his spiritual mentor, the whirling dervish known as Shams of Tabriz—that together explore the enduring power of Rumi's work. Ella Rubenstein is forty years old and unhappily married when she takes a job as a reader for a literary agent. Her first assignment is to read and report on Sweet Blasphemy, a novel written by a man named Aziz Zahara. Ella is mesmerized by his tale of Shams's search for Rumi and the dervish's role in transforming the successful but unhappy cleric into a committed mystic, passionate poet, and advocate of love. She is also taken with Shams's lessons, or rules, that offer insight into an ancient philosophy based on the unity of all people and religions, and the presence of love in each and every one of us. As she reads on, she realizes that Rumi's story mirrors her own and that Zahara—like Shams—has come to set her free.

Download or read book The Soul of Rumi written by Coleman Barks and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-12-14 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Soul of Rumi collects the poetry of the thirteenth century Persian mystic that explores the divine from the teachings of Sufism. Rumi’s masterpieces have inspired countless people throughout the centuries, and Coleman Barks’s exquisite renderings are widely considered the definitive versions. His translations capture the inward exploration and intensity that characterize Rumi’s poetry, making this unique voice of mysticism and desire contemporary while remaining true to the original poems. In this volume readers will encounter the essence of Sufism’s insights into the experience of divine love, wisdom, and the nature of both humanity and God. Rumi’s voice leaps off these pages with a rapturous power, expressing our deepest yearning for the transcendent connection with the source of the divine: there are passionate outbursts about the torment of longing for the beloved and the sweet delight that comes from union; stories of sexual adventures and of loss; poems of love and fury, sadness and joy; and quiet truths about the beauty and variety of human emotion. For Rumi, soul and body and emotion are not separate but are rather part of the great mystery of mortal life, a riddle whose solution is love. Above all else, Rumi’s poetry exposes us to the delight that comes from being fully alive, urging us always to put aside our fears and take the risk of discovering our core self. Barks’s fresh, original translations magnificently convey Rumi’s insights into the human heart and its longings with his signature passion and daring, focusing on the ecstatic experience of the inseparability of human and divine love.

Book The Portable Rumi

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jalal Rumi
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021-07-31
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 114 pages

Download or read book The Portable Rumi written by Jalal Rumi and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-31 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Portable Rumi contains verse from Rumi's The Mathnavi and The Divan of Shams-i Tabriz. Rumi's mystical epic poem The Mathnavi was chanted aloud to Husam al-Din Hasan, to whom he was passionately attached, beginning around 1258. The series of stories, although unfinished, is regarded by Persians as "the Persian Koran" and as one of the two most important works of Persian literature. Just as beautiful is Rumi's The Divan of Shams-i Tabriz, a work written expressly for his mentor Shams and titled to indicate that Shams is the author, as if the two men had become one person. Rumi believed Shams to be perfect, in the image of God. Thus, he believed that when he loved Shams, he was loving God in body and soul. Not even Rumi knew exactly how to describe his relationship with Shams. "Even friend and beloved are wrong words for this," he said. The tone of The Divan is uplifting, and Rumi manages to mix mysticism and the deeply spiritual with an eroticism that approaches the sublime: "My mouth tastes sweet with your name in it." For a world more accustomed to reading praises of the older man for the younger (Shakespeare's Sonnets, poems in the Greek Anthology, etc.), The Divan provides a moving account of love from a younger man to an older: "I turn my face to you, and into eternity: / We have been in love that long." Rumi's idea of paradise is to be with Shams: "There is a grainy taste I prefer to every / Idea of heaven: human friendship." At his best, Rumi expresses love for another man more profoundly and more poetically than any other writer except, perhaps, Shakespeare or Hafiz. "I see my beauty in you," Rumi says in another ghazal for Shams. For seven centuries, readers have discovered their own capacity for beauty in the words of Rumi.

Download or read book The Glance written by Jalaloddin Rumi and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2001-09-01 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1244, the brilliant poet Rumi and the wandering dervish Shams of Tabriz met and immediately fell into a deep spiritual connection. The Glance taps a major, yet little explored theme in Rumi's poetry-the mystical experience that occurs in the meeting of the eyes of the lover and the beloved, parent and child, friend and soul mate. Coleman Barks's new translations of these powerful and complex poems capture Rumi's range from the ethereal to the everyday. They reveal the unique place of human desire, love, and ecstasy, where there exists not just the union of two souls, but the crux of the universe. Here is a new kind of love lyric for our time-one of longing, connection, and wholeness.

Book The Forbidden Rumi

Download or read book The Forbidden Rumi written by and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2006-02-14 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first collection of poems translated into English from the forbidden volume of the Divan of Rumi • Presents Rumi’s most heretical and free-form poems • Includes introductions and commentary that provide both 13th-century context and modern interpretation After his overwhelming and life-altering encounters with Shams of Tabriz, Rumi, the great thirteenth-century mystic, poet, and originator of the whirling dervishes, let go of many of the precepts of formal religion, insisting that only a complete personal dissolving into the larger energies of God could provide the satisfaction that the heart so desperately seeks. He began to speak spontaneously in the language of poetry, and his followers compiled his 44,000 verses into 23 volumes, collectively called the Divan. When Nevit Ergin decided to translate the Divan of Rumi into English, he enlisted the help of the Turkish government, which was happy to participate. The first 22 volumes were published without difficulty, but the government withdrew its support and refused to participate in the publication of the final volume due to its openly heretical nature. Now, in The Forbidden Rumi, Will Johnson and Nevit Ergin present for the first time in English Rumi’s poems from this forbidden volume. The collection is grouped into three sections: songs to Shams and God, songs of heresy, and songs of advice and admonition. In them Rumi explains that in order to transform our consciousness, we must let go of ingrained habits and embrace new ones. In short, we must become heretics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authentic exploration of the real Rumi As one of the world's most loved poets, Rumi's poems are celebrated for their message of love and their beauty, but too often they are stripped of their mystical and spiritual meanings. The Gift of Rumi offers a new reading of Rumi, contextualizing his work against the broader backdrop of Islamic mysticism and adding a richness and authenticity that is lacking in many Westernized conceptions of his work. Author Emily Jane O'Dell has studied Sufism both academically, in her work and research at Harvard, Columbia, and the American University of Beirut, and in practice, learning from a Mevlevi master and his whirling dervishes in Istanbul. She weaves this expertise throughout The Gift of Rumi, sharing a new vision of Rumi’s classic work. At the heart of Rumi’s mystical poetry is the “religion of love” which transcends all religions. Through his majestic verses of ecstasy and longing, Rumi invites us into the religion of the heart and guides us to our own loving inner essence. The Gift of Rumi gives us a key to experiencing this profound and powerful invitation, allowing readers to meet the master in a new way.
