Book Contemporary Caribbean Cultures and Societies in a Global Context

Download or read book Contemporary Caribbean Cultures and Societies in a Global Context written by Franklin W. Knight and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribbean ranks among the earliest and most completely globalized regions in the world. From the first moment Europeans set foot on the islands to the present, products, people, and ideas have made their way back and forth between the region and other parts of the globe with unequal but inexorable force. An inventory of some of these unprecedented multidirectional exchanges, this volume provides a measure of, as well as a model for, new scholarship on globalization in the region. Ten essays by leading scholars in the field of Caribbean studies identify and illuminate important social and cultural aspects of the region as it seeks to maintain its own identity against the unrelenting pressures of globalization. These essays examine cultural phenomena in their creolized forms--from sports and religion to music and drink--as well as the Caribbean manifestations of more universal trends--from racial inequality and feminist activism to indebtedness and economic uncertainty. Throughout, the volume points to the contending forces of homogeneity and differentiation that define globalization and highlights the growing agency of the Caribbean peoples in the modern world. Book Sounds from the Beach Vendor s Coins Mixed with the Seagulls Huah Huah Huah

Download or read book Sounds from the Beach Vendor s Coins Mixed with the Seagulls Huah Huah Huah written by Dian Cunningham Parrotta and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up as a child in a working-class family, Dian Cunningham always liked magic, flying on the Brooklyn’s sea breezes and the seagulls’ huah-ings to meet the adventures that each day living in Flatbush had to offer. Dian lived in Brooklyn from her birth in 1955 to 1982, the height of the baby boomers. She grew up in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, within walking distance of Midwood High—which boasts alums such as Woody Allen, Wentworth Miller, Erich Segal, and Emmanuel Lewis—and not too far from Erasmus Hall High—where alums such as Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, and chess-whiz Bobby Fischer attended. How could the writer not feel that growing up in Brooklyn playing stickball, punch ball, and running wild in the streets, feet slapping down the cement slabs on hot sidewalks, where moms, grandmothers, elderly neighbors watched you grow up from their duplex windows and sometimes shared jubilant sunny Coney Island Beach days or painful life events, such as experiencing the wasp stings of learning about racism or being introduced to drug use on the streets, was everything she needed to meet her adulthood face on?

Book excerpt: Exploring Popular World Music is the first introductory level text written to introduce students to popular music styles from around the world. Focusing on styles that all students will know -- from Reggae to Klezmer, from Afro-Pop to Kodo drums--the book offers a comprehensive, listening-oriented introduction to the world's popular musical cultures. Each chapter will focus on a specific music style and its associated geographic locale. The salient musical and cultural features associated with each example are discussed in detail to increase our appreciation of the music. Relevant artists will be highlighted and suggestions for further reading and listening will be offered. By the end of the book, the student should be able to 1) recognize a variety of world music styles, 2) articulate musical and cultural knowledge associated with each style, and 3) identify important artists related to the genre. Supplementing the text will be a web site fcreated by the author) featuring the author's world music map, enabling students to explore pop music cultures as they relate to each other; as well as an iTunes playlist for all the highlighted selections in the book. This book should strongly appeal to Intro to World Music Courses for non-majors who wish to study popular rather than traditional musics of the world, which would encompass a large majority of students enrolled in these courses.

Book The Garland Handbook of Latin American Music

Download or read book The Garland Handbook of Latin American Music written by Dale A Olsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2000. The Garland Handbook of Latin American Music is comprised of essays from The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music: Volume 2, South America, Mexico, Central America, and the Carribean, (1998). Revised and updated, the essays offer detailed, regional studies of the different musical cultures of Latin America and examine the ways in which music helps to define the identity of this particular area. Part One provides an in-depth introduction to the area of Latin America and describes the history, geography, demography, and cultural settings of the regions that comprise Latin America. It also explores the many ways to research Latin American music, including archaeology, iconography, mythology, history, ethnography, and practice. Part Two focuses on issues and processes, such as history, politics, geography, and immigration, which are responsible for the similarities and the differences of each region's uniqueness and individuality. Part Three focuses on the different regions, countries, and cultures of Caribbean Latin America, Middle Latin America, and South America with selected regional case studies. The second edition has been expanded to cover Haiti, Panama, several more Amerindian musical cultures, and Afro-Peru. Questions for Critical Thinking at the end of each major section guide focus attention on what musical and cultural issues arise when one studies the music of Latin America -- issues that might not occur in the study of other musics of the world. Two audio compact discs offer musical examples of some of the music of Latin America.
