Book excerpt: "Rules of a Godly Life" is a popular Pietist devotional source for the Amish. Comprised of 47 proverbs, this text was originally written in the early 18th century by a non-Amish author. The proverbs are intended to guide the Amish on how to center their daily life on God through their everyday thoughts, words, and deeds. This includes what one's mind should focus on when waking up and going to sleep, and how to conduct yourself when interacting with others during the day, all in order to maintain God's focus in all that you do and live in accordance to the Bible.Despite its title, "Rules of a Godly Life" does not actually detail Amish rules, which are known as the Ordnung. The Ordnung vary from community to community, district to district, by each individual group of Amish, and they specify prohibitions and restrictions on modern technology, job options for Amish men and guidelines for everyday living such as dress codes and how to interact with non-Amish people. When an Amish person is baptized, they are promising to uphold these rules of their church and to never break from them. The "Rules of a Godly Life," on the other hand, are considered more of an annex to the Bible -- an inspirational book to help guide the way to a more fulfilling life.

  • Pages : 192 pages

Book excerpt: A Bible study about sex for women? Now that’s different! This new study, Passion Pursuit: What Kind of Love Are You Making?, lets God’s Word speak about sex as being holy and erotic, blessed by God, and satisfying far beyond what the world can even imagine. Picture that as a headline on the cover of Cosmopolitan! By using scripture throughout the Bible, Passion Pursuit not only urges women to pursue passion but details how God has given them permission to do so. Though there is fun to be had along the way in this study, it hits hard on the questions women have but are hesitant to ask, like: What does God say is okay and not okay in the bedroom? I’m 54 years old; how can my husband still be attracted to me? Why did God make men and women so different? This audaciously bold study combines the psychological expertise of Dr Juli Slattery, formerly of Focus on the Family, along with moving stories from trusted Bible teacher and best-selling author Linda Dillow. The groups who have already done this study have seen their marriages come alive, whether they’ve been married four months or forty years; be next!

Book The Rules of a Holy Life

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nicholas Byfield
  • Publisher : Puritan Publications
  • Release : 2013-12-22
  • ISBN : 1626630666
  • Pages : 175 pages

Download or read book The Rules of a Holy Life written by Nicholas Byfield and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2013-12-22 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is one of the most biblically sound and theologically amazing works on Christian sanctification and holy living. If any man is going to gain profit by something, as Byfield says, then he is going to gain profit by holy living. There is no one biblical text that Byfield utilizes. Instead, he uses passages from the entire Bible and masterfully applies scripture topically to various aspects of living a holy Christian life. He covers such topics as preparations to a godly life, general rules to be remembered in the manner of doing all good duties, rules that concern the preservation of our love to God, and how we should carry ourselves in God’s house. He also deals with rules that order us about hearing of the word, of baptism, of the Lord’s Supper, of prayer, of reading the Scriptures, of singing psalms, of vowing and swearing, of fasting, of keeping the Sabbath, and much much more. This is an astoundingly helpful work, not to turn the Christian into one that “follows rules,” but one that desires to see his life reflect God’s holy prescription of being more like Jesus Christ through living out the Bible’s truth. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

If you're living for God--living by the rules--you'll always be exhausted. You'll feel that you're not doing enough for God and that if you don't "measure up," He will be displeased with you. But God never meant for the Christian life to be that way! His Love for us isn't based on how we perform for Him. He sent Christ to set us free from rules. He didn't call us to serve Him in our own feeble power, but to let His power flow through us--a power that is without limit! What's more, this power is already available to us right now. God has provided everything we need for a truly meaningful, joy-filled life here on earth...all because of His marvelous grace. Rest in God's grace, and let Him live through you. • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Visual Theology written by Tim Challies and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a visual culture. Today, people increasingly rely upon visuals to help them understand new and difficult concepts. The rise and stunning popularity of the Internet infographic has given us a new way in which to convey data, concepts and ideas. But the visual portrayal of truth is not a novel idea. Indeed, God himself used visuals to teach truth to his people. The tabernacle of the Old Testament was a visual representation of man's distance from God and God's condescension to his people. Each part of the tabernacle was meant to display something of man's treason against God and God's kind response. Likewise, the sacraments of the New Testament are visual representations of man's sin and God's response. Even the cross was both reality and a visual demonstration. As teachers and lovers of sound theology, Challies and Byers have a deep desire to convey the concepts and principles of systematic theology in a fresh, beautiful and informative way. In this book, they have made the deepest truths of the Bible accessible in a way that can be seen and understood by a visual generation.

Book A Blueprint for Discipleship

Download or read book A Blueprint for Discipleship written by Kevin M. Watson and published by Discipleship Resources. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do no harm. Do good. Practice the spiritual disciplines. Watch over one another in love. --John Wesley's General Rules Why is this so hard? Does being a part of the Wesleyan tradition make any difference in living out your faith? Does Methodism offer guidance as we look to the future and seek renewal? Methodist Christians sometimes exhibit the most unchristian attitudes and behavior. People notice. And it's reflecting badly on the church, but we can--individually and collectively--correct the problem. Allow God to enter more deeply into your life until it's hard to tell where you end and God begins. "Most American Christians are struggling to practice their faith," Watson writes. "...Methodists can hold on and try not to let our tradition die, but mere survival is not God's deepest desire for us or the church. Instead, we must choose to live by stubbornly depending on God's Spirit, allowing our lives to give witness to who Christ is." A Blueprint for Discipleship offers a practical approach to Christian discipleship that's distinctly Wesleyan. Watson addresses the overwhelming desire of many Methodist Christians who want a more meaningful relationship with God but aren't sure how to start. Reawaken to the power and vitality of your spiritual heritage. Repent of apathy and spiritual complacency to reclaim, in the words of Wesley, "the form and power of godliness."
