Book The Leverage of National Board Candidacy

Download or read book The Leverage of National Board Candidacy written by Jana Hunzicker and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2006-12 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Leverage of National Board Candidacy is written for teachers considering the pursuit of National Board certification as well as for those currently engaged in the certification process. Capturing the experiences of Anne, Barbara, and Jamie, three teachers who sought NBPTS certification during the 2004-2005 school year, the book vividly describes their teaching practices, guiding philosophies, and thought processes before exploring each teacher s learning as it occurred during the certification year. Comparing the three teachers' certification experiences to the findings of recently conducted research, the book explores characteristics of readiness for National Board candidacy, common learning outcomes of the NBPTS certification process, and possible explanations for the varying nature and degree of learning that occurred for the three teachers through the experience. The final chapter presents the theory of leverage during National Board candidacy, an interactive dynamic that creates an uncomfortable yet positive pressure that makes the pursuit of National Board certification one of the most powerful professional development experiences currently available to teachers.

Download or read book National Board for Professional Teaching Standards written by National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Arlington, VA. and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nongovernmental organization that develops professional standards for early childhood, elementary, and secondary school teaching. National Board Certification signifies that a teacher or school counselor is accomplished, having met challenging professional standards as evidenced by performance-based assessments. The assessment process for National Board Certification is designed to collect standards-based evidence of accomplished practice. In all certificate areas, candidates for National Board Certification are required to complete two major components: a portfolio of classroom practice, and an assessment of content knowledge administered at a computer-based testing center. This guide is an introduction to the assessment process and eligibility requirements and provides useful information for applying for National Board Certification. The guide also contains information for those opting for "Take One!", which is a unique offering from the NBPTS that improves teaching quality by providing educators with the opportunity to reflect on their own classroom instructional practices within the context of national teaching standards, and later begin the path toward National Board candidacy, if they so choose.

Book excerpt: For anyone who was a candidate for National Board certification or might be a candidate in the future, Certifiable: Teaching, Learning, and National Board Certification is a must-read book. Dr. Lustick (NBCT, 1998 & 2008) explores all aspects of the certification process in an accessible and meaningful style. Lustick uses his own considerable experiences as a science teacher, National Board candidate, National Board assessor, and educational researcher to provide evidence of NBPTS as an opportunity for professional growth. What are teachers learning from National Board certification? Dr. Lustick interviewed more than 140 teachers from 42 states to find an answer. In a report to congress, the National Research Council described Dr. Lustick's work as one of only two studies "that objectively evaluated the impact of certification] on teachers' practices." Whether a candidate was ultimately identified as accomplished or not, David Lustick's research indicates that certification offers all candidates a chance to improve their practice. This book provides educational stakeholders an important resource for understanding NBPTS as a means to improve teacher quality in an environment of high stakes testing.
