Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rulers of India It may be thought that in the chapter on Afghan affairs I have not observed due proportion. There is ground for this. Sir John Lawrence's policy and action have been so much misunderstood that I have thought it best to give a plain narrative of facts with quotations from documents. It is essential to know not only what Sir John Lawrence said and did, but the time at which and the circumstances under which he said and did it. If my own conclusions be thought to be those of a disciple, the facts are there, and the reader will judge for himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rulers of India: The Earl of Mayo The Life of Dalhousie dealt with the last accessions made to the British dominions in India under the East India Company. The present volume exhibits a memorable stage in the process by which those dominions, old and new, were welded together into the India of the Queen. Between the two periods a time of trial had intervened. Northern India, drained of its European regiments in spite of the protests of Dalhousie, seemed during the agony of 1857 to lie at the mercy of the revolted native troops. The Mutiny left behind it many political lessons, and two historical facts. These facts were that the Sepoys in whom the East India Company gloried as its chief strength had proved its chief danger, and that the ruling princes of India, whom the Company always regarded as a main source of danger, had proved a source of strength. I say the ruling princes of India. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rulers of India: Babar Babar is the link between Central Asia and India, between predatory hordes and imperial government, between Tamerlane and Akbar. The blood of the two great Scourges of Asia, Chingiz and Timur, mixed in his veins, and to the daring and restlessness of the nomad Tatar he joined the culture and urbanity of the Persian. He brought the energy of the Mongol, the courage and capacity of the Turk, to the listless Hindu; and, himself a soldier of fortune and no architect of empire, he yet laid the first stone of the splendid fabric which his grand son Akbar achieved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rulers of India: Viscount Hardinge The following pages are a simple narrative of the principal incidents in the career of one of the 'Rulers of India, ' a career marked by eventful scenes in both European and Oriental history. The narrative is based on public documents, family papers, and letters of Lord Hardinge, written immediately after the events they describe - some of them almost on the field of battle. I have ventured to add some personal recollections of the period when I was his Private Secretary in India. But I feel that the words which his own pen indited portray his character better than descriptions and arguments by another hand. It has been my special aim to throw light upon those matters to which my Father himself attached importance, and concerning which his desire was that they should, after due lapse of time, become publicly known. With regard to the literary arrangement of the work, I have to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. J. S. Cotton, which has been of great value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Rulers of India, Vol. 4 By which the average home-keeping Englishman justifies to himself the indulgence of sitting down and casting dust on his head whenever he looks back upon the exploits of his countrymen in India, an attitude which is observed by foreigners with suspicion or impatience according to their insight into English character. Yet it would be easy to prove that one important reason why the English so rapidly conquered India was this, that the countries that fell into our hands had no nationalities, no long-seated ruling dynasties, or ancient aristocracies, that they had in fact no solid or permanent organization of any kind, but were politically treasure trove at the disposal of the first, who, having found, could keep. The best proof that in these countries the English destroyed no organized political institutions is the historical fact that in the coun tries which they annexed none such had been left for them to destroy. On the other hand, where indigenous political institutions of long standing still exist it is the English who have saved them from destruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rulers of India: Lord William Bentinck The youngest student of the growth Of the British power in India does not need to be told that we first went to that country as traders, and that our only representatives were merchants who thought nothing about the politics Of the country or Of interfering with the Native Powers, and who were exclusively engaged in their counting-houses. That condition Of things went on for nearly I 50 years, and when the competition with the French, who would have expelled all other European traders if the programme Of Dupleix had been realised, resulted in our unexpected triumph, accomplished by the genius of Clive, the East India Company - still cherishing above territorial possessions and military glory the commercial monopoly granted by Elizabeth and extended by Anne - preserved its character as a society Of merchants, esteeming its annual investment in country goods, whether in Bengal, Bombay, or Madras, of far higher importance than matters Of administration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Asoka, the Buddhist Emperor of India A volume on Asoka Maurya by Professor Rhys Davids was intended to be the first of the Rulers of India series, but unfortunately circumstances pre vented the fulfilment of that intention, and the series was closed leaving vacant the niche destined for the great Buddhist emperor. With the approval of Pro fessor Rhys Davids I have undertaken the preparation of a supplementary volume giving in a popular form the substance of what is known concerning the Maurya empire. The sources of our knowledge. Of ancient Indian history are so meagre that it is im possible to treat the subject of this volume in a manner similar to that in which the biographies of Akbar, Albuquerque, and other Indian worthies have been treated. All minute biographical details are lacking, and a distinct picture of the man Asoka cannot be painted. Nevertheless, enough is known to render the subject interesting, and if my book should fail to interest readers, the fault will lie rather with the author than with the subject. Hamont asserts, he was already dreaming of the con quest of India; the rather, as no passage is cited in proof of this precocious reverie. In 1730 he was appointed governor of Chander. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rulers of India: Ranjit Singh IN writing this sketch of the life and times of Maharaja Ranjit Singh I have made large and fre quent use of my former works on the cognate sub jects; The Punjab Chiefs, The Rdjds of the Punjab, and The Law of Inheritance to Sikh Chiefships. On these books several years of my official life, and several subsequent years of such leisure as belongs to Indian officials, were employed. They contain in full detail the histories of all the great Sikh families in the Punjab proper and the ois-sutlej territories, of the men who were the courtiers the advisers, and generals of the great Maharaja. There was no noble family in the province with which I was not personally acquainted, and from their records and information, as much as from official manuscripts and documents, the history of the time was com piled. It is thus obvious that I am compelled to plagiarize from myself. To Dr. Ernest Trumpp's work on the Adi Granth, I am indebted for some portion of the information contained in the Chapter on The Sikh Theocracy, and to Mr. Denzil Ibbetson's admirable Census Report of 1881, for certain statistics and deductions therefrom.
