Book Foucault Buddhism and Disciplinary Rules

Download or read book Foucault Buddhism and Disciplinary Rules written by Malcolm Voyce and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book suggests that previous critiques of the rules of Buddhist monks (Vinaya) may now be reconsidered in order to deal with some of the assumptions concerning the legal nature of these rules and to provide a focus on how Vinaya texts may have actually operated in practice. Malcolm Voyce utilizes the work of Foucault and his notions of 'power' and 'subjectivity' in three ways. First, he examines The Buddha's role as a lawmaker to show how Buddhist texts were a form of lawmaking that had a diffused and lateral conception of authority. While lawmakers in some religious groups may be seen as authoritative, in the sense that leaders or founders were coercive or charismatic, the Buddhist concept of authority allows for a degree of freedom for the individual to shape or form themselves. Second, he shows that the confession ritual acted as a disciplinary measure to develop a unique sense of collective governance based on self regulation, self-governance and self-discipline. Third, he argues that while the Vinaya has been seen by some as a code or form of regulation that required obedience, the Vinaya had a double nature in that its rules could be transgressed and that offenders could be dealt with appropriately in particular situations. Voyce shows that the Vinaya was not an independent legal system, but that it was dependent on the Dharmaśāstra for some of its jurisprudential needs, and that it was not a form of customary law in the strict sense, but a wider system of jurisprudence linked to Dharmaśāstra principles and precepts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most popularly known as the author of the children's classic The Chronicles of Narnia, C. S. Lewis was also a prolific poet, essayist, novelist, and Christian writer. His most famous work, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, while known as a children's book is often read as a Christian allegory and remains to this day one of his best-loved works. But Lewis was prolific in a number of areas, including poetry, Christian writing, literary criticism, letters, memoir, autobiography, sermons and more. This set, written by experts, guides readers to a better understanding and appreciation of this important and influential writer. Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. His mother died when he was young, leaving his father to raise him and his older brother Warren. He fought and was wounded in World War I and later became immersed in the spiritual life of Christianity. While he delved into the world of Christian writing, he did not limit himself to one genre and produced a remarkable oeuvre that continues to be widely read, taught, and adored at all levels. As part of the circle known as the Inklings, which consisted of writers and intellectuals, and included J.R.R. Tolkien, Charles Williams, and others, he developed and honed his skills and continued to put out extensive writings. Many different groups now claim him as their own: spanning genres from science fiction to Christian literature, from nonfiction to children's stories, his output remains among the most popular and complex. Here, experts in the field of Lewis studies examine all his works along with the details of his life and the culture in which he lived to give readers the fullest complete picture of the man, the writer, and the husband, alongside his works, his legacy, and his place in English letters.

Book excerpt: Many new believers struggle due to a lack of knowledge. The Bible states that we as baby Christians should desire the sincere milk of the Word that we might grow by it. Many people get born again and go back into the old lifestyle because they have no root in the Word and their foundation is weak. I would like to see every new believer become established and grounded in the Word so that they have a firm foundation that cannot be moved. Tests and trials come to each of us and the type of foundation our life is built upon determines whether we stand or fall. The more we understand the Word, the stronger our foundation becomes. God desires that we take His written Word and His revealed Word and apply them to our daily lives. This book is intended to inspire new believers to go after God, to get to know Him, and to love the Word. There is no greater joy than knowing Jesus who came to give His life for us so that we can have eternal life.

Gandhi’s views – disseminated through many short essays in Harijan and other journals of his time – on Sanatan Dharma, idol worship, Rama as a God, compulsory teaching of Gita in schools, conversion, cow-slaughter and protection, varnashramas, untouchability and other aspects are presented here in his own words. Book Fictions of Adolescent Carnality

Download or read book Fictions of Adolescent Carnality written by Lydia Kokkola and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fictions of Adolescent Carnality considers one of the most controversial topics related to adolescents: their experience of desire. In fiction for adolescents, carnal desire is variously presented as a source of angst, an overwhelming experience over which one has no control, bestial, disgusting and, just occasionally, a source of pleasure. The on-set of desire, within the Anglophone tradition, has been closely associated with the loss of innocence and the end of childhood. Drawing on a corpus of 200 narratives of adolescent desire, Kokkola examines the connections between sociological accounts of teenagers’ sexual behaviour, adult fears for and about their off-spring and fictional representations of adolescents exploring their sexuality. Taking up topics such as adolescent pregnancy and parenthood, queer sexualities, animal-human connections and sexual abuse, Kokkola provides wide-ranging insights into how Anglophone literature responds to adolescents’ carnal desires, and contributes to on-going debates on the construction of adolescence and the ideology of innocence.

Book excerpt: The definition of carnal feelings and desires are sexual and physical, without any spiritual element. Their ruling passion is that of carnal love. I knew her mind coursed with carnal lust, raw and unquenchable as she stared at me with those striking blue eyes of hers. It broke my heart to know I was just her plaything and nothing more. I was falling in love with Emma, but I don't think she can love me back. Emma just isn't built that way. I was going to have to be satisfied with being used for her pleasure or not being with her at all. I had a tough decision to make, and after the mind-blowing intimacy we had just shared, I was in no condition to make that judgment. Emma Cross, a hugely successful CEO, is used to getting what she wants when she wants it with no questions asked and no strings attached. When she meets Mia Blackburn, a thirty-two-year-old divorced mother, she can't help but be drawn to her gorgeous body. Still, Mia's demure attitude and reservations about her own sexuality create the most intoxicating game of cat and mouse Emma Cross has ever played with a lover. Emma gives Mia everything she has ever wanted and more, but will she be able to give Mia the one thing she truly desires - her undying love? Or will her carnal games be as far as Emma Cross is willing to go?Her Carnal Games Series Order: Her Carnal Love: Book OneHer Carnal Desire: Book Two Her Carnal Undoing: Book Three
