The annotation is used to build a concrete implementation of a generic processing framework translating the annotation of a service into rules to be integrated into an OWL knowledge base rule engine. The realization is done for the Jena Semantic Web Framework, an open source library for Semantic Web application for the Java language. The realization is designed as an add-on to Jena which integrates service calls in such a way that service invocation is transparent to applications building on Jena. A discussion on optimizations, both implemented ones and realizable but not implemented ones is included. They can serve as starting points for moving the implementation from a proof of concept status to real world usability. The section finishes with some considerations on general run-time behavior. Finally the presented framework is evaluated in more detail: Firstly, a sophisticated scenario for the running example is described and shown, how automated service selection, composition and invocation is actually realized during run-time. Then the approach is evaluated with regard to services with more complex parameterizations with particular focus on the data supplied to the services and the rules generated from such complex parameterized services and whether such rules are still usable. The prime design rationale of the presented framework implementation is as a proof of concept for the approach of generically integrating Web Services as rules with Semantic knowledge bases. The rapidly growing spectrum of database applications has led to the establishment of more specialized discussion platforms (DaWaK conference, EC Web conference, and DEXA workshop), which were all held in parallel with the DEXA conference in Munich. In your hands are the results of much effort, beginning with the preparation of the submitted papers. The papers then passed through the reviewing process, and the accepted papers were revised to final versions by their authors and arranged with the conference program. All this culminated in the conference itself. A total of 175 papers were submitted to this conference, and I would like to thank all the authors. They are the real base of the conference. The program committee and the supporting reviewers produced altogether 497 referee reports, on average of 2.84 reports per paper, and selected 93 papers for presentation. Comparing the weight or more precisely the number of papers devoted to particular topics at several recent DEXA conferences, an increase can be recognized in the areas of XMS databases, active databases, and multi and hypermedia efforts. The space devoted to the more classical topics such as information retrieval, distribution and Web aspects, and transaction, indexing and query aspects has remained more or less unchanged. Some decrease is visible for object orientation.

The series of Conferences on Advanced Information S- tems Engineering (CAiSE) was launched in Scandinavia by Janis Bubenko and Arne Solvberg in 1989, became an important European conference, and was held annually in major European sites throughout the 1990s. Now, in its 14th year,CAiSEwasheldforthe?rsttimeoutsideEurope,showcasinginternational researchon information systems and their engineering. Not surprisingly, this year the conference enjoyed unprecedented attention. In total, the conference received 173 paper submissions, the highest number ever for a CAiSE conference. Of those, 42 were accepted as regular papers and 26 as short (poster) papers. In addition, the conference received 12 proposals for workshops of which 8 were approved, while 4 tutorials were selected from 15 submissions. The technical program was put together by an international committee of 81 experts. In total, 505 reviews were submitted, with every member of the committeecontributing.Decisionsonallsubmissionswerereachedataprogram committee meeting in Toronto on January 26-27,2002. Workshop and tutorial proposals were handled separately by committees chaired by Patrick Martin (workshops), and Jarek Gryz and Richard Paige (tutorials). We wish to extend a great “THANK YOU!” to all members of the program and organizing committees for their volunteer contributions of time and exp- tise. The fact that so many busy (and famous!) people took the trouble to help uswiththeorganizationofthisconferenceandtheformationofitstechnicalp- gram speaks well for the future of CAiSE and the ?eld of Information Systems Engineering.
