Book Food Security Policy in Africa Between Disaster Relief and Structural Adjustment

Download or read book Food Security Policy in Africa Between Disaster Relief and Structural Adjustment written by Gabriele Geier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the FAO, one person in three in sub-Saharan Africa suffers from malnutrition, and one in seven is in danger of dying. Most African countries no longer seem capable of ensuring that their people have access to sufficient food. Given the failure of past efforts the objectives of food security policies and their effectiveness have to be reconsidered. This book shows that the debate on food security policies has changed with the passage of time. The entitlement debate triggered by A. Sen had a major influence on this change but, the bearing of socio-economic structures on the food security of African households and their individual members are still not fully recognised.

Book excerpt: The 10th International Basement Tectonics Conference was conducted on the campus of the University of Minnesota, Duluth, in Duluth, Minnesota, USA, from August I through August 11, 1992. A total of 78 individuals were in attendance, 47 of which represented the host country, with the remaining 31 traveling from 11 different foreign countries. The four days of presentations were divided into three technical sessions, namely "Shear Zones", "Basement Control On Younger Structures", and "Rifting Midcontinent Rift System". This tripartite conference theme was also employed in the field trip agenda with three excursions being offered, all ably organized by Field Trip Chairman John C. Green. The pre-conference trip set the stage through a two day review of the "Archean and Early Proterozoic Rocks of Northeastern Minnesota". Under beautiful summer skies, 16 sites were visited within the Vermilion district of Minnesota, considered to be the best example of an Archean greenstone belt in the United States. All registrants participated in the mid-conference trip conducted along the gabbroic and volcanic terrain of the "Midcontinent Rift, Northeastern Minnesota".

Book The History and Traditions of the Pimbwe

Download or read book The History and Traditions of the Pimbwe written by Seel, Sarah-Jane and published by Mkuki na Nyota Publishers. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the history, tradition and culture of a small tribe know as the Pimbwe in Tanzania. It describes the life of the Pimbwe from the pre-colonial era, through the arrival of missionaries, colonisation and post independence, right up to the present day. By reading this book, you will discover the origins of the Pimbwe, their traditions and their culture, which although not differing greatly from those of other African tribes, constitute an intriguing and unique story. In 2008 a group of researchers help a workshop in Mpanda to compile a collection of information and various narrative from Pimbwe elders who maintain and highly honour the Pimbwe communities culture and norms. The researchers subsequently used archival and other published historical materials to ingrate Pimbwe narrative into know historical events. It should be remembered that this book was written with the aim of preserving in written form a history which has been passed down through generations and held in the memories of the elders. It is also hoped that this book will help new generations, particularly of the Pimbwe community, to understand and honour their culture and traditions in a world in which globalisation continuously erodes cultural diversity.
