Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Ventricular Function at Rest and During Exercise Ventrikelfunktion in Ruhe und w hrend Belastung

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. RoSKAMM This International Symposium to be held on the occasion of the third anniversary of our institution and under the auspices of the European Society of Cardiology is entitled "Ventricular Function at Rest and During Exercise". We have chosen the general term "ventricular function", because we want to include the different aspects of myocardial function like contrac tility, relaxation and compliance and their influence upon the overall pumping function of the heart. Heart failure at rest is a rather advanced outcome of a continuous spectrum of function disturbances. In order to grade these, it is reasonable to differentiate between pump function of the heart as a whole and muscle function of the myocardium. Compen satory factors like hypertrophy or the Frank-Starling mechanism may maintain the overall pump function of the ventricle, despite a defect in the underlying myocardial contractility. The time sequence of the func tional disturbances may be as follows (Fig. 1): EXERCISE £""-----,--------------, >- " 5 ~, ~ ~, ~ '~ I o u f--~__;_;IJ"_'_~'"'"* t REST II Fig. 1. Download or read book Gandhi written by Peter Ruhe and published by Phaidon Press. This book was released on 2004-10-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This striking compilation of almost 300 photographs offers a profound insight into the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) as both a public figure and a private individual. It embodies a precious and intimate view of a side to Gandhi's life with which many are not as familiar, through a perspective that is at once pragmatic and personal. This book pursues a compelling visual narrative and permits us a very rare and highly privileged understanding of Gandhi - given via a diverse range of photographic lenses from the witty and ardent press, to the sensitive and intelligent agency and the ingenuous eye of a great nephew. Many of these images have never been seen before. They are derived from two essential and exclusive collections: the photo-archives of Gandhi's foremost biographer Vithalbhai Jhaveri, and those of Kanu Gandhi, Gandhi's great nephew. After Jhaveri's death, Peter Rühe assimilated the extensive photo collection of over 9,000 prints into a photo-archive of the highest standard, using scientific cataloguing and computerization. The second photographic source, that of Kanu Gandhi, is especially breathtaking because of its history. Kanu Gandhi lived with Mahatma Gandhi for the last 12 years of the latter's life. He was the sole person by whom Gandhi consented to be photographed - and, even so, only on three conditions: that the freedom movement would not fund them; that there was to be no use of flash; and that Gandhi would not pose for him. In Rühe's book, Gandhi's extraordinary life is brought to light by means of this astounding collection of images. The pictures in this compilation are also unique in that they follow Gandhi all the way from his early life in India, to his law studies in London, his work in South Africa, and finally his return to lead the struggle for Indian independence, which won him the title 'father of the nation' in India. A magnificent accomplishment in itself, this volume identifies the encompassing sweep of world politics and the perpetual struggles of the poor with the life of a single individual, whose impact on the world is matched by few in the history of mankind.

Book Dutch Traditional Ganseys

Download or read book Dutch Traditional Ganseys written by Stella Ruhe and published by Search Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the period between 1875 and 1950, Dutch fishermen wore sweaters with distinctive knit and purl stitch patterns and sometimes cables. The sweaters were knit out of sturdy blue, natural, grey or black wool. The women from the fishing villages along the Dutch coast would use their own patterns, and because of the close-knit character of many fishing communities, these patterns could be linked to specific towns. A fisherman could be identified by his gansey: the motif could for instance be traced back to Urk or Katwijk. Stella Ruhe collected many patterns and motifs and had the ganseys reknit using modern yarns. This book contains historical and new photographs, sketches and charts for all the ganseys, which you can use to knit a gansey from your favorite fishing village. Of course, the historical context of these ganseys is as important as the objects themselves. That is why the book is also full of stories and interesting facts about the daily life of fishermen - with a few fishy stories as well! The combination of history and modern patterns make Dutch Traditional Ganseys a unique book for knitters, and a great read for everyone interested in craft, culture and heritage.
