Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rugby Football The Isthmian Library of Sports and Pastimes has for its chief object the instruction of the novice who is the master neither of sporting technique nor of any considerable athletic knowledge. It is our hope to win many friends from the ranks of those who are regular frequenters of the playing fields, but are unable to find there a demonstration of those first principles upon which all athletic success is based. We shall seek to make these books true primers of sport. They will take nothing for granted, nor will they assume even elementary achievements. At the same time, we venture to believe that the authors who have given us their most able and welcome assistance are so well entitled to speak, each for his own sport, that. Book Football the Rugby Game Classic Reprint

Download or read book Football the Rugby Game Classic Reprint written by Harry Vassall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the original rules of rugby as well as many other historical details of the great game in this 125 year old short-but-sweet treasure. Originally published in 1889 Harry Vassall's Football, The Rugby Game briefly discusses the rules, positions, and general flow of a game of rugby. At less than 75 pages, of which nearly 20 are composed of an appendix, this is clearly a book intended to be an introduction to the sport. He opens with a brief history of rugby and the development of the game and its rules over time. From there, Vassall begins a more technical discussion of the specific positions within rugby, dedicating individual chapters to the roles of the fullback, three quarterback, halfback, and forward. The author also discusses the role of the referee, and the evolution of rugby rules. The book concludes with an appendix presenting the rules of rugby current in his time. Vassal presents the information in a thorough but easy to understand style, opening up the game (which as even its best fans will appeciate can be a little Byzantine at times) for the layman and casual fan. The chapters highlighting the specific positions are the bread and butter of Vassall's book and present the book's most important information. While the game of rugby has certainly evolved since this book's publication, many of the foundational techniques are unchanged, although it is fascinating to compare those that have with their equivalents today. For those interested in rugby, especially its history and how it used to be played (when men were men, and a pack of gigantic Welshmen charging straight at you was a good afternoon's entertainment) Vassall's book remains a worthwhile read. Book Manufacturing Masculinity

Download or read book Manufacturing Masculinity written by Peter Horton and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2017 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tribute to Professor J. A. (Tony) Mangan is well-deserved. Professor Mangan is a path-breaking scholar. Mangan's impact is measurable in the rarest of ways: institution-building. Under his leadership, a globally situated team has opened a new relationship between sport and the academy and I recommend Manufacturing Masculinity: The Mangan Oeuvre -- Global Reflections on J.A. Mangan's Studies of Masculinity, Imperialism and Militarism as, yet again, it offers a unique consideration of the relationship between sport and academy. Professor John D. Kelly - University of Chicago Professor Mangan has since the early 1980s been one of the foremost international scholars within his chosen field of cultural history. Over this period he has possibly more convincingly than any other international academic shown in his research how much sport and associated forms of competitive performance have not only reflected and reproduced but indeed sometimes also reformed and redirected fundamental political, cultural and social structures and ideological transformative forces in modern civilisation. Professor Henrik Meinander - University of Helsinki Professor Mangan is widely and greatly respected in China as a scholar of international distinction... he has made both direct and indirect contributions to Chinese scholarship especially regarding Chinese women and their long struggle for emancipation... Finally, and I cannot stress this point too strongly, a most important contribution ... has been his crystal clear and nuanced writing style much appreciated by... Chinese who wish to write for the international scholastic world. Professor Dong Jinxia - Peking University No one has had a more influential role in, or made a greater contribution to the cultural history of modern sport than Professor J.A. Mangan. With his visionary, pioneering monographs and many seminal edited collections and as founding editor of the series Sport in the Global Society with its numerous volumes and most especially as founding editor and editor of The International Journal of the History of Sport for some thirty years -- which he took from the original three numbers a year to eighteen numbers a year, his contribution has been unparalleled. Professor Roberta J. Park - University of California, Berkeley

Book Rugby Football

Download or read book Rugby Football written by D. R. Gent and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D. R. Gent author of "Rugby Football" can be considered an expert of the topic of rugby for two reasons. The first is that he was a member of the Gloucester Rugby Club from 1903 to 1910. The second is his deep personal interest in the sport which becomes very apparent in this book. His main goal in writing this book is share this incredible passion and hopefully inspire others, "My object in writing this book has been to help people either to play Rugby or to appreciate it." His goal of bringing rugby to the masses is evident in the multitude of topics he covers in the text. He also was very concerned with the lack of knowledge the general public had about the game. "Keenness for a game is certainly the prime requisite, but the greater the knowledge that is possessed, the better for the game." As a result, Gent made sure to cover as much about rugby as possible to both alleviate ignorance and to increase interest. "For that reason, I hope that what I have written may conduce to a fuller enjoyment of Rugby by everybody who may happen to read it; and if it leads to a little less applause on the part of the spectators sometimes, for what is rank bad football, I shall feel not a little rewarded." Gent's passion for the sport permeates the pages of this book. An interesting read for anyone who wants to explore rugby as a sport but also that aspect of British culture. Download or read book Rugby School Register Vol 3 written by A. T. Michell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rugby School Register, Vol. 3: From May, 1874, to May, 1904 This volume comprises a second edition of the portion of the School Register printed in 1891, and a continuation of the list of admissions from Easter, 1887, to the present term. The names, as is well known, are taken from the Headmaster's Album, and the revision consists in replacing, where possible, by full names the initials by which alone some of the parents have been registered; in adding changes of their rank or title; in inserting the letters o.r., followed by the dates of their entering the School, when the fact of their being themselves Old Rugbeians has been ascertained; in correcting mistakes in the names of the sons, and in stating the order of their birth, whenever this information has been supplied; and lastly, in, giving the date of leaving. In the annotation the design has been to append to each name the principal School, College, and other educational honours or distinctions; the entry upon any profession or business, with dates; and the present address. An Athletic Record is also included, but is confined to the principal School Events, the Football XV., the Cricket Xl., the Shooting VIII., the Racquet Pair, and the Crick Run. An asterisk following the numerals denotes the position of twelfth man for cricket, or its equivalent in football or shooting. The Register Forms, instituted in 1891, to be filled up by boys in their first term, and to supply details not contained in the Album, have proved of great value in revising the entries, which ought to be now nearly perfect. For the annotation, circulars have been posted to all Old Rugbeians of the period embraced, but the percentage of replies has been very low, and many of the replies were incomplete. To trace the careers of those who failed to reply, lists have been sent to all House Masters; and local lists to Old Rugbeians in some thirty of the large towns; and the Editor has received much help from these sources. Book The emergence of footballing cultures

Download or read book The emergence of footballing cultures written by Gary James and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Manchester football, by leading football historian Gary James, considers the sport’s emergence, development and establishment through to its position as the city’s leading team sport. The period from 1840 to 1919 saw football in Manchester develop from an inconsequential, occasionally outlawed activity, into a major business with a variety of popular football clubs and supporting industry. This book makes a distinct and original contribution to the historiography of sport. It is the first academic study into the development of association football in Manchester, and is directly linked to the current state of knowledge and debates within sports history on football’s origins. It adds regional focus to inform the wider debate, contextualising the growth of the sport in the city and identifies communities who propagated and developed football. Robust research should ensure that this becomes the benchmark study of regional football.
