Book L apologie de J r me contre Rufin

Download or read book L apologie de J r me contre Rufin written by Pierre Lardet and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the three books of his Contra Rufinum, a work dating back to his mature period (401-402), Jerome (ca 347-420) fought against his erstwhile friend turned rival, Rufinus: the two Latin monks, one settled in Bethlehem, the other in Jerusalem, had come to confront each other on such issues as the timeliness and ways (translation, commentary...) of transmitting an Oriental heritage to the West, Greek (in particular the works of Origen [ca. 185-ca. 253], whose Peri Archôn they both translated in competition) as well as Jewish (the biblical hebraica veritas which Jerome championed). They were also at variance on the appreciation of profane culture (the Latin classics). Jerome's Contra Rufinum is a masterpiece by a brilliant polemist and an important document as to a knowledge of the actors and the vicissitudes of a controversy which mobilised many Christians, Eastern and Western alike, on the eve of the sacking of Rome by the Barbarians. This commentary seeks to analyse the treatise in all its facets (historical and theological, philological and rhetorical), and to elucidate its connections with the different traditions (classical, biblical, patristic) to which it belongs. The Contra Rufinum thus turns out to be a remarkable vantage point from which to illuminate the entire corpus of an author whose work, spread over nearly half a century, was immensely influential during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Book Origen on the Song of Songs as the Spirit of Scripture

Download or read book Origen on the Song of Songs as the Spirit of Scripture written by J. Christopher King and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian interpretations of the Song of Songs have long depended upon the allegorical reading developed by Origen of Alexandria (c.185-c.254). This study aims to show that Origen's Commentary and two Homilies on the Song of Songs clearly portray the Song of Songs as the biblical book that, as the Bridegroom's perfect marriage-song, reveals the `spirit' of Scripture with greater intensity and immediacy than any other.

Book Homilies on Psalms 36 38

Download or read book Homilies on Psalms 36 38 written by Origen and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023-05-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the first English translation of the nine extant homilies on Psalms 36[37]–38[39] preached by Origen (d. 253/4) to his congregation at Caesarea as arranged and translated for Latin readers by his admirer, Rufinus of Aquileia (d. 411). These homilies are among the earliest extant examples of patristic preaching on the Psalter. The interpretation offered throughout these homilies, which is almost wholly moral, reflects Origen’s understanding of the “soul” of the scriptural text. These homilies provide a glimpse of Origen’s account of scriptural meaning, outlined in De principiis 4, in pastoral practice. In his preaching, Origen offers a vision of the Christian life as centered on the soul’s continuing conversion, growth, and progress, with particular reference to and within the context of the Church. The life of the believer is one of combat and struggle with powers opposed to Christ. It is Christ, as the divine Physician, who offers healing to the one who is wounded and ailing from sin, and it is Christ, as Wisdom and Word of God, who instructs and educates the believer in the life of the Spirit. These homilies reveal the substantial coherence of Origen’s thought, as expressed in the more speculative De principiis and as revealed in the more elaborate, nuptial theology found in his Commentary on the Canticle. This volume includes a robust introduction and complements the work of Joseph Trigg, whose translation from the original Greek of the cache of homilies discovered in Codex Monacensis 314 has recently appeared in this series.
