By means of this comparison, and by explaining the individual features of one type by those of the other, the nature of mysticism itself becomes gradually more comprehensible." --From the Foreword

Book Judaism and the Visual Image

Download or read book Judaism and the Visual Image written by Melissa Raphael and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widespread assumption that Jewish religious tradition is mediated through words, not pictures, has left Jewish art with no significant role to play in Jewish theology and ethics. Judaism and the Visual Image argues for a Jewish theology of image that, among other things, helps us re-read the creation story in Genesis 1 and to question why images of Jewish women as religious subjects appear to be doubly suppressed by the Second Commandment, when images of observant male Jews have become legitimate, even iconic, representations of Jewish holiness. Raphael further suggests that 'devout beholding' of images of the Holocaust is a corrective to post-Holocaust theologies of divine absence from suffering that are infused by a sub-theological aesthetic of the sublime. Raphael concludes by proposing that the relationship between God and Israel composes itself into a unitary dance or moving image by which each generation participates in a processive revelation that is itself the ultimate work of Jewish art.

Book Rudolf Otto and the Foundation of the History of Religions

Download or read book Rudolf Otto and the Foundation of the History of Religions written by Yoshitsugu Sawai and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date treatment of Rudolf Otto and his work, placing him in the context of comparative religion, theology, and the philosophy of religion. Yoshitsugu Sawai shows how Otto has “three faces”: the Lutheran Theologian, the Philosopher of Religion, and the Comparative Religionist. The book also shows how, of these, Otto saw himself primarily as a Lutheran Theologian, and provides an account of Otto's engagement with India and the centrality that Hindu theology had on his thinking. In Otto's theory of religion, his well-known concepts including “wholly other” and “numinous” constitute a multiple structure of meaning. For example, his concept of the “wholly other” (das ganz Andere) no doubt has the meaning of “God” in his Christian theological studies. At the same time, however, from the perspective of comparative religion or the phenomenology of religion, this same term semantically implies the “ultimate reality” of other religious traditions; “Brahman” and “God” (Isvara) in Hindu religious tradition as well as “God” in Christianity.

Book Men Religion and Melancholia

Download or read book Men Religion and Melancholia written by Donald Capps and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not by coincidence that the key figures in the psychology of religion - William James, Rudolf Otto, Carl Jung, and Erik Erikson - each fought a lifelong battle with melancholia, argues Donald Capps in this engrossing book. These four men experienced similar traumas in early childhood: each perceived a loss of mother's unconditional love. In the deep melancholy that resulted, they turned to religion. Capps contends that the main impetus for men to become religious lies in such melancholia, and that these four authors were typical, although their losses were especially severe because of complicating personal circumstances. Offering a new way of viewing the major classics in the psychology of religion, Capps explores the psychological origins of these authors' own religious visions through a sensitive examination of their writings.

Book Religion Theory Critique

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard King
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2017-07-18
  • ISBN : 0231518242
  • Pages : 558 pages

Download or read book Religion Theory Critique written by Richard King and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion, Theory, Critique is an essential tool for learning about theory and method in the study of religion. Leading experts engage with contemporary and classical theories as well as non-Western cultural contexts. Unlike other collections, this anthology emphasizes the dynamic relationship between "religion" as an object of study and different methodological approaches and openly addresses the question of the manifold ways in which "religion," "secular," and "culture" are imagined within different disciplinary horizons. This volume is the first textbook which seeks to engage discussion of classical approaches with contemporary cultural and critical theories. Contributors write on the influence of the natural sciences in the study of religion; the role of European Christianity in modeling theories of religion; religious experience and the interface with cognitive science; the structure and function of religious language; the social-scientific study of religion; ritual in religion; the phenomenology of religion; critical theory and religion; embodiment and religion; the impact of colonialism and modernity; theorizing religion in terms of race and ethnicity; links among religion, nationalism, and globalization; the interplay of gender, sex, and religion; and religion and the environment. Each chapter introduces the topic, identifies key theorists and issues, and respects the pluralistic nature of the scholarship in the field. Altogether, this collection scrutinizes the explicit and implicit assumptions theorists make about religion as an object of analysis.

Book The Holy in a Pluralistic World

Download or read book The Holy in a Pluralistic World written by Ulrich Rosenhagen and published by Equinox Publishing (UK). This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rudolf Otto (1869-1937) was one of the most important contributors to the study of religions at the beginning of the 20th century. His book, The Idea of the Holy, became a sensation in its time, and his account of numinous experience as a mysterium tremendum et fascinans ("a mystery that both repels and attracts") had an effect equalled by few other ideas in the study of religions. His vocabulary broke through narrow disciplinary bounds and was taken up by scholars in a variety of disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences.Since the 1960s, Otto has been increasingly overlooked and neglected. As thinkers and scholars have turned in many other intellectual directions, they have tended to see Otto as representative of a past to be rejected. The Holy in a Pluralistic World gathers essays from a variety of perspectives - theology, religious studies, intellectual history, and cultural studies - to address what Otto's legacy for the 21st century might be.This volume explores Otto's ideas and their contexts, then turns to the area that Otto, more than any other German theologian or philosopher of religion, opened up: an engagement with the world of religions. However, Otto's influence has never been confined to systematic religious thought and the study of religions. His ideas have resonated more widely, and essays presented here examine this wider impact, in architecture, poetry, politics, and the contemporary world more generally. The Holy in a Pluralistic World is not an attempt to revivify Rudolf Otto, nor offer a magisterial statement about Otto's significance today. It issues an invitation to those with an interest not just in religions but also in cultural phenomena to take another look at Otto and his ideas. Perhaps they will find more than they expect, and something that they can use.

Book The Sacred and its Scholars

Download or read book The Sacred and its Scholars written by Idinopulos and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1996-10-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays is devoted to a careful examination of the importance of methodology in the study of primary religious data. The essays focus on the "Sacred" as an ultimate object of descriptive analysis and critical scrutiny on the part of a select number of North American and European methodologists in the study and teaching of the history of religions and its allied disciplines. The central question to which the contributors respond are these: What is the Sacred? Is it a being or a concept of a being; is it a mental state or an objective reality or something else entirely? Can the Sacred be described as an empirical fact, or as a formal rule for religious inquiry? If the Sacred is a valid category in the study and teaching of religion, then what can be said about the antithesis of the sacred, namely the profane or the secular? This volume probes these questions with great care in order to justify a number of ways the Sacred can be construed as an indispensable notion for the study and teaching of religion.

Book Rudolf Steiner on His Book The Philosophy of Freedom

Download or read book Rudolf Steiner on His Book The Philosophy of Freedom written by Otto Palmer and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 1975 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eternal becoming in thinking Every step a deepening Overcoming the surface Penetrating the depths." --Rudolf Steiner Much has been written by students of spiritual science on The Philosophy of Freedom, but the advantage of discovering what the author himself had to say about this most important and seminal work should be obvious. Not only were the words of the text chosen most carefully, but also its very structure was intended to become a powerful inner experience for the careful reader. In a sense, all of the works that flowed from Rudolf Steiner in the following years were to elaborate on this great work. At the age of twenty-seven, Rudolf Steiner "was beset by questions" related to outer human life, whereas inner human nature had been revealing itself to him with increasing clarity as a world of reality. In all his works, Steiner had relied on contemplation of that inner world, which led to writing The Philosophy of Freedom. His intention was to join inner and outer so that true inner work would lead to fully incarnating as human beings. The book that resulted became a pillar of anthroposophic practice and essential study for every student of inner development. Otto Palmer has provided an invaluable service by extracting numerous references from the words of Rudolf Steiner, providing keys to the deeper meanings behind the words of The Philosophy of Freedom, making it more accessible and meaningful to readers.

Book The Varieties of Religious Experience

Download or read book The Varieties of Religious Experience written by William James and published by The Floating Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard psychologist and philosopher William James' The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature explores the nature of religion and, in James' observation, its divorce from science when studied academically. After publication in 1902 it quickly became a canonical text of philosophy and psychology, remaining in print through the entire century. "Scientific theories are organically conditioned just as much as religious emotions are; and if we only knew the facts intimately enough, we should doubtless see 'the liver' determining the dicta of the sturdy atheist as decisively as it does those of the Methodist under conviction anxious about his soul. When it alters in one way the blood that percolates it, we get the Methodist, when in another way, we get the atheist form of mind."
