This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rudolf Eucken, His Life, Work, and Travels I have nothing to tell of great achievements, nor have I had any share in important political movements; but I was in a position to study the inner course of life and to exert some useful influence upon it. I have lived through the remarkable spiritual changes in the condition of Germany. In my youth the circumstances of life were far simpler and more peaceful than they are today. Life flowed in narrower channels. There was as yet none of that gigantic advance of industry and manufacture; there were no great cities with their clotted masses of human ity; life was not dominated by the workshops, or absorbed entirely in a feverish industrial activity. Book Chinese and Buddhist Philosophy in Early Twentieth Century German Thought

Download or read book Chinese and Buddhist Philosophy in Early Twentieth Century German Thought written by Eric S. Nelson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a comprehensive portrayal of the reading of Chinese and Buddhist philosophy in early twentieth-century German thought, Chinese and Buddhist Philosophy in Early Twentieth-Century German Thought examines the implications of these readings for contemporary issues in comparative and intercultural philosophy. Through a series of case studies from the late 19th-century and early 20th-century, Eric Nelson focuses on the reception and uses of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism in German philosophy, covering figures as diverse as Buber, Heidegger, and Misch. He argues that the growing intertextuality between traditions cannot be appropriately interpreted through notions of exclusive identities, closed horizons, or unitary traditions. Providing an account of the context, motivations, and hermeneutical strategies of early twentieth-century European thinkers' interpretation of Asian philosophy, Nelson also throws new light on the question of the relation between Heidegger and Asian philosophy. Reflecting the growing interest in the possibility of intercultural and global philosophy, Chinese and Buddhist Philosophy in Early Twentieth-Century German Thought opens up the possibility of a more inclusive intercultural conception of philosophy.

Book A Rebel to His Last Breath

Download or read book A Rebel to His Last Breath written by Bill Cooke and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first biography of Joseph McCabe (1867-1955), a former Catholic preist who became one of the best-known champions and a prolific popularizer of freethought and rationalism in the first half of the 20th century. McCabe's encyclopedic curiosity, rigorous scholarship, and above all his unswerving intellectual honesty led him through a tumultuous career of public lecturing and debating, and an incredible output of over 200 books. He tackled the most controversial issues of the modern era: evolution, biblical errancy, belief in God, immorality, spiritualism, capitalism vs. socialism, women's rights, and many other topics. Much of his writing was published in the form of the "Little Blue Books" by E. Haldeman-Julius, who declared McCabe to be "the world's greatest scholar." Today in our postmodern period, where Enlightenment values are being questioned and irrationalism in many guises has become fashionable, McCabe's gift for rational inquiry, respect for scientific evidence, and lucid, no-nonsense prose are both relevant and welcome.

Book Baron Friedrich Von H gel and the Modernist Crisis in England

Download or read book Baron Friedrich Von H gel and the Modernist Crisis in England written by Lawrence F. Barmann and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1972-04-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1890 and 1910 the Roman Catholic Church underwent a severe moral and intellectual crisis. A group of progressive Catholic scholars, later dubbed the 'modernists', challenged the authority of official Catholic teaching in many areas, basing their ideas on contemporary movements generally. The official reaction was at first discouraging and then openly hostile - most of the modernists were forced to leave the Church and their writings were placed in the Index. As one might expect, the accounts of the crisis by those who were closely involved in it are generally strongly partisan; moreover, its effects are still evident in present disputes in the Church but in 1972 the time came for an objective historical assessment of the major figures of the crisis as a means for understanding the movement as a whole. In this authoritative study Dr Barmann reconstructs in detail von Hugel's involvement in the modernist movement, particularly in England and rejects the received explanations of his survival in the Church.

Book Freedom with Responsibility

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anthony James Nicholls
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 9780198208525
  • Pages : 442 pages

Download or read book Freedom with Responsibility written by Anthony James Nicholls and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book goes behind the success story of the Federal Republic of Germany since the Second World War to examine the principles underpinning the so-called "economic miracle." A.J. Nicholls examines the intellectual origins and history of the concept of the Social Market Economy, and its implementation in the difficult years of post-war devastation and recovery in West Germany. He traces the struggle of liberal economists to assert their ideas in the unfavorable circumstances from 1933 to 1948, when they triumphed with Erhard's implementation of a policy of liberalization following currency reform. The book analyzes the extent to which West Germany's economic success was due to Erhard's policies, and assesses his attempts to attain the goals of the social market up to 1963, when he became Federal Chancellor. Nicholls's study makes an important contribution to our understanding of the historical dynamics of the German economy and the political culture of the Federal Republic.
