Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The Good Listener is a bold, new, fiction book about a plan among the animal leaders of the world, who meet at a barn in Los Angeles and develop a plan to end to the world-wide destruction and suffering caused by human beings: the animals have realized that the devastation is almost irreversible and that the animals have one last chance to stop the humans before a mass extinction of the animal kingdom begins. The animals agree to infect a young couple with a special seed obtained from the tar pits, secretly creating a hybrid-child, The Good Listener, a human baby with certain plant and animal characteristics which help the child communicate with every living thing on the earth. While The Good Listener has no eyes, ears, mouth, nor nostrils, it can breathe, see, and hear through its green skin, and is neither male nor female. Insects, birds and animals all come to see the wonderous child, while grasses, trees and plants bloom as the child walks past. The animals hope that The Good Listener will convince the people of the world that they must change their ways before the humans are left in a world with no plants or animals, but the government seizes the child for evaluation after it is seen in public. With The Good Listener’s help, the animals of the sea create a tsunami, attacking Los Angeles; and while the predators of the land attack humans in the city, the rest of the animals flee to the high mountains beginning a new life away from humans. At the same time, the plants release a new type of pollen, which is nutritious to birds and insects, but is flammable, and is also noxious and toxic to humans. To save themselves, the humans must develop a plan respecting, accommodating and incorporating all of the plants, insects, fish and animals of the world, or the humans will become extinct instead of the plants or the animals. The book is an adventure story comprised of numerous animals, several humans and the hybrid-child. The book contains a pre-quill embedded within the storyline, as well as an open-end, allowing a sequel. In addition, several of the animal characters have such unique personalities allowing the development of one or more independent prequel storylines. Alan, the king of the ants and Frank, the lord of the flies, are central figures in the book and likely deserve their own background stories. Finally, the main character, the hybrid-child, is unique and fascinating, creating a never-before seen opportunity to develop a multi-book line of sequels.

Book excerpt: A family struggles in the aftermath of a tragic car accident in this psychological novel by the author of Keeping Lucy. Sylvie can hardly bear to remember how normal her family was two years ago. All of that changed on the night an oncoming vehicle forced their car over the edge of a covered bridge into the river. With horrible swiftness, Sylvie’s young son was gone, her husband lost his legs, and she was left with shattering blame and grief. Eleven-year-old Ruby misses her little brother, too. But she also misses the mother who has become a recluse in their old home while Ruby and her dad try to piece themselves back together. Amid all the uncertainty in her life, Ruby becomes obsessed with bridges, drawing inspiration from the strength and purpose that underlies their grace. During one momentous week, as Hurricane Irene bears down on their small Vermont town and a pregnant teenager with a devastating secret gradually draws Sylvie back into the world, Ruby and her mother will have a chance to span the gap between them again. Praise for The Forever Bridge “I loved The Forever Bridge from its first beautiful sentence to its breathtaking final one.” —Ann Hood “This is contemporary fiction at its finest, a story that will tug on your heart strings and keep you reading with your heart and soul.” —Random Book Musings

Book Ruby and Olivia

Download or read book Ruby and Olivia written by Rachel Hawkins and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spooky middle-grade story that's full of fun, friendship, and humor--perfect for fans of Ingrid Law and Lisa Graff. Ruby is bold and opinionated, while Olivia has always been respectful and well behaved. But Olivia’s good-girl image is tarnished when she takes the fall for her twin sister’s misdeed. And now Olivia is stuck with Ruby all summer—at a community service day camp for troublemakers. To kick off the spirit of service, the campers are tasked with cataloging the contents of Live Oaks, a historic mansion in their town. Sorting through objects in an old house sounds boring, and working together is the last thing the girls want to do, but the stuff is actually kind of cool. There’s everything from mink stoles to golf clubs to antique dolls . . . and . . . wait . . . is that doll watching them? It isn’t long until little tricks—like mysterious music playing, doors slamming, and shadows rising—start to spook the girls. They’d like to think the other campers are pranking them, but they soon realize that this empty mansion might not be uninhabited after all. To solve the mystery at Live Oaks, Ruby and Olivia will have to put their old grudges aside and figure out how to be a team. This gently creepy middle-grade story is full of all the heart, humor, and authenticity that make Rachel Hawkins a favorite with kids and teachers alike.

Book excerpt: Begin the descent into Hell with the final book in the Queen of the Damned series by USA Bestselling paranormal romance and urban fantasy author Kel Carpenter . . . As with everything else in my life, the descent into Hell was not so simple. When I jumped into the portal I expected to find the Sins on the other side. I expected to find my people—demons—waiting and ready. What I found were flames and fire and ash. The apocalypse hadn't waited for me. It had already begun. Hell's barriers were collapsing in on themselves—making my task of finding the Sins infinitely harder. As the Horsemen and I set out on our journey to find them, we discover that not all is what it seems. A white-haired assassin once told me to beware of the evil that hides in plain sight. I should have listened to her. The fight for Hell has begun, and the duty of saving it lies solely on my shoulders, but to win—to survive—I must unravel the secrets of the past if any of us are to see the future. I will take what is mine, even if I have to bleed for it. Author's note: This is a completed paranormal RH series. If you love books by K. Lorraine, Eva Chase, J Bree, K.F. Book excerpt: “So, is this where you finally tell me who you are and why you’re following me?” They didn’t look at each other, but each of their faces was set in grim determination. “I am Pestilence,” Rysten said. No… “I am Famine,” Allistair followed. Devil save me. “I am Death,” Julian continued in a cool tone. It should have clicked with me sooner. “My name is Laran, and I am War,” the fourth and final one said. They didn’t continue because they didn’t need to. I knew who they were. Every demon in both worlds knew who they were. “You’re the Four Horsemen,” I whispered. ~ . ~ . ~ We’ve all heard the story of the Four Horsemen. Harbingers of the apocalypse. Destruction given form. Four of the sexiest—wait no—forget that. You get my point. So imagine my surprise when I find out everything I’ve ever been told, is a lie. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here. Let’s start from the beginning. My name is Ruby Morningstar. I run a tattoo parlor in Portland with my bestfriend, have a pet raccoon, a crazy ex that stalks me, not to mention this one little thing… I’m a demon. Half-succubus, to be exact. For the last twenty-three years of my life, that’s the story I believed, but on the day a handsome stranger bails me out of jail my world is turned upside down, and suddenly I don’t know who I am anymore. Because the Four Horsemen aren’t the bringers of the apocalypse. I am. Talk about never catching a break. *This series is incredibly funny, sexy, and fast-paced--but it can also be dark at times.
