Book The Negro in Virginia

Download or read book The Negro in Virginia written by and published by Blair. This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slavery is as basic a part of Virginia history as George Washington, who was accompanied at Valley Forge and Yorktown by his slave William Lee, and Thomas Jefferson, who directed his slaves to cut 30 feet off a mountaintop for the site of Monticello. Slavery in the Old Dominion began in 1619, when a Spanish frigate was captured and its cargo of Negroes brought to Jamestown. Virginia Negroes experienced slavery as field laborers, as skilled craftsmen, as house servants. In 1935, the Virginia Writers' Project began collecting data for a history of Negroes in the Old Dominion through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Depression. Published in 1940 as "The Negro in Virginia", it was regarded as a "classic of its kind." Modern readers will be surprised at how relevant it remains today. -- From publisher's description.

Book excerpt: For nearly 100 years, Indian boarding schools in Canada and the US produced newspapers read by white settlers, government officials, and Indigenous parents. These newspapers were used as a settler colonial tool, yet within these tightly controlled narratives there also existed sites of resistance. This book traces colonial narratives of language, time, and place from the nineteenth-century to the present day, post-Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE PROLOGUE. IN THE GLADE AND BY THE MOONLIGHT. The great, round moon looked down in a flood of silver light upon the virgin forest by the banks of the Scioto, the beautiful river which winds through the richest and fairest valley in all the wide western land--the great corn valley of the Shawnee tribe--those red warriors who, in their excursions across the Ohio (the "La Belle" river of the early French adventurers) had given to the plains and valleys of Kentucky the name of "The Dark and Bloody Land." The tree-tops were green and silver; but under the spreading branches, sable was the gloom. The strange, odd noises of the night broke the forest stillness. One hears all noises in the night even in a civilized land; how much more wondrous then are the wild, free cries of the inhabitants of the great greenwood, untrammeled by the restraining hand of man! The free winds surged with a mournful sound through the branches of the wood. A ring around the moon told the coming storm.

Book Shooting Stars of the Small Screen

Download or read book Shooting Stars of the Small Screen written by Douglas Brode and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of television, Westerns have been playing on the small screen. From the mid-1950s until the early 1960s, they were one of TV's most popular genres, with millions of viewers tuning in to such popular shows as Rawhide, Gunsmoke, and Disney's Davy Crockett. Though the cultural revolution of the later 1960s contributed to the demise of traditional Western programs, the Western never actually disappeared from TV. Instead, it took on new forms, such as the highly popular Lonesome Dove and Deadwood, while exploring the lives of characters who never before had a starring role, including anti-heroes, mountain men, farmers, Native and African Americans, Latinos, and women. Shooting Stars of the Small Screen is a comprehensive encyclopedia of more than 450 actors who received star billing or played a recurring character role in a TV Western series or a made-for-TV Western movie or miniseries from the late 1940s up to 2008. Douglas Brode covers the highlights of each actor's career, including Western movie work, if significant, to give a full sense of the actor's screen persona(s). Within the entries are discussions of scores of popular Western TV shows that explore how these programs both reflected and impacted the social world in which they aired. Brode opens the encyclopedia with a fascinating history of the TV Western that traces its roots in B Western movies, while also showing how TV Westerns developed their own unique storytelling conventions.

Book Veronica s Dragon

Download or read book Veronica s Dragon written by Ruby Dixon and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resonance. It's a given on the ice planet, forced upon you by the parasitic symbiont called the 'khui'. With resonance, a guy and a girl are paired up because they'll make great babies. It's a survival mechanism necessary for this sparsely-populated world we're stranded on...and romantic, in a weird, alien way. Everyone expects resonance to happen when twenty newcomers are dropped onto the frosty world. I doubt anyone expects the gorgeous, golden god named Ashtar to resonate to someone like me, though. He's fierce. Flirty. Powerful. Disgustingly handsome.I'm...not any of those things. I'm bland. Boring. Clumsy. But resonance seems to think we'd be great together. And Ashtar does, too...___The Icehome series features all of the adventure, humor and community you've come to expect in the Ice Planet Barbarians series, but it stands on its own. You do not need to read the other series (or be caught up) in order to read VERONICA'S DRAGON. I do recommend reading LAUREN'S BARBARIAN to get the full experience. Enjoy!
