Book excerpt: Peter Paul Rubens was the most inventive and prolific northern European artist of his age. This book discusses his life and work in relation to three interrelated themes: spirit, ingenuity, and genius. It argues that Rubens and his reception were pivotal in the transformation of early modern ingenuity into Romantic genius. Ranging across the artist’s entire career, it explores Rubens’s engagement with these themes in his art and life. Alexander Marr looks at Rubens’s forays into altarpiece painting in Italy as well as his collaborations with fellow artists in his hometown of Antwerp, and his complex relationship with the spirit of pleasure. It concludes with his late landscapes in connection to genius loci, the spirit of the place.

Book From Darkness to Light

Download or read book From Darkness to Light written by Ruben S and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Darkness to Light presents a true account of the life of Ruben S. The son of a frightened mother and an alcoholic father, Ruben grew up shuttling between Puerto Rico and Florida. His intention is not to portray himself as a fearless, brave, intelligent, or grandiose person; to him, these characteristics are irrelevant when considering the personal destruction of a human being. Instead, he intends to tell a story that seeks to guide others to identify their own pain and failures. Learn to seek and identify those areas that are creating problems in your life and, without comparing them, address, correct, and remove them once and for all. For families or friends affected by the use and abuse of alcohol, controlled substances, or other devastating problems, Ruben's story should serve as a call for change. It can provide a foundation for anyone trying to resume life, find freedom from the destructive force that is addiction, and once again become a productive member of society. From Darkness to Light is the story of a life saved and brought back from the precipice of alcohol and drug abuse. It is a story of hope that aims to make a difference in the life of anyone who reads it.

Book Alma Rubens Silent Snowbird

Download or read book Alma Rubens Silent Snowbird written by Alma Rubens and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dark-eyed and distant Alma Rubens was one of the first female stars of the early feature film industry in the 1910s. She was a major star by 1920, but before the decade was over her screen career was marked and marred by cocaine abuse. She died in 1931 at age 33--a Hollywood beauty, a casualty of Hollywood "snow," yet much more. As an actress she was versatile, demonstrating a talent that was ahead of its time with her gentle and subtle expressions. This book contains Rubens's autobiography, a text titled This Bright World Again that was serialized in newspapers in 1931. Ghost-written or not or somewhere in between, this long forgotten document deals with Rubens's addiction and despair. In addition, a new biography of Rubens takes the reader from her birth in San Francisco through an impoverished upbringing, three short-lived marriages, and her career in pictures for Triangle Film, Cosmopolitan, Fox and other production companies. The story of her film career mingles with a tale of desperate drug addiction that led to hospital stays, violence and deception. A filmography lists her credits from 1913 to 1929.

Book Defining the Holy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah Hamilton
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-12-05
  • ISBN : 1351945610
  • Pages : 323 pages

Download or read book Defining the Holy written by Sarah Hamilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holy sites, both public - churches, monasteries, shrines - and more private - domestic chapels, oratories - populated the landscape of medieval and early modern Europe, providing contemporaries with access to the divine. These sacred spaces thus defined religious experience, and were fundamental to both the geography and social history of Europe over the course of 1,000 years. But how were these sacred spaces, both public and private, defined? How were they created, used, recognised and transformed? And to what extent did these definitions change over the course of time, and in particular as a result of the changes wrought in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Taking a strongly interdisciplinary approach, this volume tackles these questions from the point of view of archaeology, architectural and art history, liturgy, and history to consider the fundamental interaction between the sacred and the profane. Exploring the establishment of sacred space within both the public and domestic spheres, as well as the role of the secular within the sacred sphere, each chapter provides fascinating insights into how these concepts helped shape, and were shaped by, wider society. By highlighting these issues on a European basis from the medieval period through the age of the reformations, these essays demonstrate the significance of continuity as much as change in definitions of sacred space, and thus identify long term trends which have hitherto been absent in more limited studies. As such this volume provides essential reading for anyone with an interest in the ecclesiastical development of western Europe from the thirteenth to the eighteenth centuries.

Download or read book Rubens and the Human Body written by Cordula Van Wyhe and published by Body in Art. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did contemporary audiences recognise the sensuously painted 'Rubensian body' as a particular, if not peculiar, artistic repertoire? How can we best understand seventeenth-century practises of reading and viewing the Rubensian body? Can our criteria for eroticism be linked with that of Rubens? Was the body a 'fluid' category for Rubens and where does the boundary of the human body lie? It is hoped that these investigative questions will lead to a detailed evaluation about the paradigmatic status of the Rubensian body and whether we are justified in stressing its singularity within seventeenth-century Flemish and the broader early modern European visual culture.
