Book Rebooting the Regions

Download or read book Rebooting the Regions written by Paul Spoonley and published by Massey University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loss of jobs, loss of young people, the ageing demographic, the apparently irresistible magnet of Auckland . . . the economic fortunes of New Zealand's regions are of great concern to politicians, the business community, schools, employers — and indeed most citizens. What is the dynamic at work here? Is there a remedy? Is there a silver lining? What works? What doesn't? What are the smart regions doing that shows promise? This collection of expert articles addresses the issues facing our regions and investigates the reasons for population loss. Often those solutions involve facing up to the fact that decline is inevitable and unavoidable — and then coming up with smart new plans and policies that accept that the end of growth does not have to mean the end of prosperity.

Book Observing the Volcano World

Download or read book Observing the Volcano World written by Carina J. Fearnley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides a comprehensive overview of volcanic crisis research, the goal being to establish ways of successfully applying volcanology in practice and to identify areas that need to be addressed for future progress. It shows how volcano crises are managed in practice, and helps to establish best practices. Consequently the book brings together authors from all over the globe who work with volcanoes, ranging from observatory volcanologists, disaster practitioners and government officials to NGO-based and government practitioners to address three key aspects of volcanic crises. First, the book explores the unique nature of volcanic hazards, which makes them a particularly challenging threat to forecast and manage, due in part to their varying spatial and temporal characteristics. Second, it presents lessons learned on how to best manage volcanic events based on a number of crises that have shaped our understanding of volcanic hazards and crises management. Third, it discusses the diverse and wide-ranging aspects of communication involved in crises, which merge old practices and new technologies to accommodate an increasingly challenging and globalised world. The information and insights presented here are essential to tapping established knowledge, moving towards more robust volcanic crises management, and understanding how the volcanic world is perceived from a range of standpoints and contexts around the globe.

Book excerpt: Picture, for a minute, every artwork of colonial New Zealand you can think of. Now add a chain gang. Hard-labour men guarded by other men with guns. Men moving heavy metal. Men picking at the earth. Over and over again. This was the reality of nineteenth-century New Zealand. Forced labour haunts the streets we walk today and the spaces we take for granted. The unfree work of prisoners has shaped New Zealand's urban centres and rural landscapes, and Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa – the Pacific – in profound and unsettling ways. Yet these stories are largely unknown: a hidden history in plain sight. Blood and Dirt explains, for the first time, the making of New Zealand and its Pacific empire through the prism of prison labour. Jared Davidson asks us to look beyond the walls of our nineteenth- and early twentieth-century prisons to see penal practice as playing an active, central role in the creation of modern New Zealand. Journeying from the Hohi mission station in the Bay of Islands through to Milford Sound, vast forest plantations, and on to Parliament itself, this vivid and engaging book will change the way you view New Zealand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart-warming and compulsive reading, this is an entertaining, lively and moving novel from one of New Zealand's favourite authors. ‘Donny Mac was released at Eastertime, about a month before Pansy Holloway, also known as Nightshade, disappeared for good.’ After a short stint in prison on trumped-up charges, the loveable simpleton Donny Mac returns to the house left to him by his grandfather in the small settlement of Manawa, in the shadow of Mt Ruapehu. Now inhabited by a handful of colourful locals, the once prosperous milling town is only bustling in the ski season when the out-of-towners arrive. Awaiting Donny’s return is the drunken and pregnant Nightshade, who claims he is the father. Donny's friends keep watch anxiously: the lace-making Bull Howie; Vera who can be seen every evening wheeling Bull’s dinner in a pram down to his house in her own version of meals on wheels; farmer George Kingi and his fey four-year-old daughter Lovey; and the strange elderly sisters who have moved in next door. Also watching is the Virgin Tracey, a sixteen-year-old hiding out in one of the abandoned houses, with her own tiny baby. When an accident threatens to put Donny back into prison, he and the Virgin Tracey come up with a solution to cover it up. But can the secret remain hidden?

Book excerpt: What does one do when the dream of a lifetime is realised? What is beyond Reinga (the place of departing spirits)? Questions, so long ignored and put on the back burner of my mind, now had to be faced. We walked, very slowly, back up the track to the car. I sat down and untied the Hoka laces for the last time. It seemed another lifetime when I had tied them at Bluff, but it was only a little over 37 days. With my Swiss Army knife, I cut the bandages off my feet. Two of my nails stayed attached to my toes and the other eight stayed with the bandages. I sat for a long time, and looked at the feet and the soles of the shoes. All four were in tatters, but had done everything, and more, that had been asked of them. I would keep the shoes as a memorial of the greatest task I had ever set myself. I guessed I would keep the feet too. They would never be the same, and it was hard to imagine them being pain-free again. I stood and looked southwards and thought of AH Reed all those years ago, setting off from here and heading for Bluff with his little suitcase and dressed properly in hat and tie (and good boots). I wished my father could have been here to see this. We have no way of knowing how long we will have loved ones about, so we need to communicate more often with them about our feelings and dreams.
