Download or read book The Saffron Surge Untold Story of RSS Leadership written by Arun Anand and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Right since its inception; there has been a tradition in the RSS of not highlighting the work of an individual; so the lives and work done by the Sarsanghchalaks have not been discussed publicly much. The general perception is that the RSS chief (Sarsanghchalak) is one of the most powerful persons in the country as he holds sway over millions of swayamsevaks (volunteers) and dozens of organisations run by these swayamsevaks including the Bharatiya Janata Party which rules at the Centre as well as in several states. But what is the truth? What role Sarsanghchalaks have played in shaping the RSS? This well researched book takes one through the lives of the five Sarsanghchalaks who had steered RSS since its inception through one of its most tumultuous years. It tells a hitherto untold story about not only the lives of the Sarsanghchalaks but also the journey of the RSS itself.

Book The Saffron Wave

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Blom Hansen
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 1999-03-23
  • ISBN : 1400823056
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book The Saffron Wave written by Thomas Blom Hansen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1999-03-23 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of strong nationalist and religious movements in postcolonial and newly democratic countries alarms many Western observers. In The Saffron Wave, Thomas Hansen turns our attention to recent events in the world's largest democracy, India. Here he analyzes Indian receptivity to the right-wing Hindu nationalist party and its political wing, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which claims to create a polity based on "ancient" Hindu culture. Rather than interpreting Hindu nationalism as a mainly religious phenomenon, or a strictly political movement, Hansen places the BJP within the context of the larger transformations of democratic governance in India. Hansen demonstrates that democratic transformation has enabled such developments as political mobilization among the lower castes and civil protections for religious minorities. Against this backdrop, the Hindu nationalist movement has successfully articulated the anxieties and desires of the large and amorphous Indian middle class. A form of conservative populism, the movement has attracted not only privileged groups fearing encroachment on their dominant positions but also "plebeian" and impoverished groups seeking recognition around a majoritarian rhetoric of cultural pride, order, and national strength. Combining political theory, ethnographic material, and sensitivity to colonial and postcolonial history, The Saffron Wave offers fresh insights into Indian politics and, by focusing on the links between democracy and ethnic majoritarianism, advances our understanding of democracy in the postcolonial world.

Book excerpt: Founded in 1925, banned three times by the governments of independent India but with a widespread network of thousands of local branches and millions of volunteers, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh's (RSS) presence and influence is formidable. However, it has long been acknowledged that the best way to know the RSS is to join it. Perhaps, this is why there is very little literature on how it functions. As a senior member who has managed various responsibilities in the RSS over the years, Ratan Sharda reveals the supposedly secret world of this volunteer organisation. He presents a comprehensive view of the Sangh's philosophy, its workings and its humungous reach through various organisations inspired by it across India in a simple and easy-flowing manner, sprinkled with interesting anecdotes. With an insider's knowledge of the philosophy, organisational structure and working of this huge cadre-based organisation, RSS 360o is a compelling read, attempting to lift the alleged veil of secrecy that shrouds the organisation.

Book Human Rights and the Third World

Download or read book Human Rights and the Third World written by Subrata Sankar Bagchi and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Rights and the Third World: Issues and Discourses deals with the controversial questions on the universalistic notions of human rights. It finds Third World perspectives on human rights and seeks to open up a discursive space in the human rights discourse to address unresolved questions, citing issues and problems from different countries in the Third World: Whether alternative perspectives should be taken as the standard for human rights in the Third World countries? Should there be a universalistic notion of rights for Homo sapiens or are we talking about two diametrically opposite trends and standards of human rights for the same species? How far these Third World perspectives of human rights can ensure the protection of the minorities and the vulnerable sections of population, particularly the women and children within the Third World? Can these alternative perspectives help in fighting the Third World problems like poverty, hunger, corruption, despotism, social exclusion like the caste system in India, communalism, and the like? Can there be reconciliation between the Third World perspectives and the Western perspective of human rights?

Book The Future of Christian Mission in India

Download or read book The Future of Christian Mission in India written by Augustine Kanjamala and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial missionaries, both Catholic and Protestant, arrived in India with the grandiose vision of converting the pagans because, like St. Peter (Acts 4:12) and most of the church fathers, they honestly believed that there is no salvation outside the church (extra ecclesiam nulla salus). At the end of the "great Protestant century," however, Christians made up less than 3 percent of the population in India, and the hope of the missionary was nearly shattered. But if one looks at mission in India qualitatively rather than quantitatively, one sees a number of positive outcomes. Missionaries in India, particularly Protestant missionaries espousing the social gospel, in collaboration with a few British evangelical administrators, dared to challenge numerous social evils and even began to eradicate them. The scientific and liberal English education began to enlighten and transform the Indian mindset. Converts belonging to the upper caste, although small in number, laid the foundation stone of Indian theology and an inculturated church using Indian genius. The end of colonialism in India coincided with the painful death of colonial mission theology. Now, the power of the Word of God, extricated from political power, is slowly and peacefully gaining ground, like the mustard seed of the parable. A paradigm shift from the ecclesio-centric mission to missio Dei offers reason for further optimism. In short, the future of mission in India is as bright as the kingdom of God. In today's new context, theologians, despite objections from some quarters, are struggling to discover the Asian face of Jesus, disfigured by the Greco-Roman Church. And the missionary is challenged to become a living Bible that, undoubtedly, everyone will read.

The highlight is on the ways in which English language publications contribute to and function within middle class matrices of modernity, consumption, conflict, and conservatism in India.

Book Education and Religion

Download or read book Education and Religion written by Keith Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most countries, whether secular or otherwise, education and religion are closely interlinked and no matter how hard the state tries, it can be very difficult to remove the ties between them. This book investigates the links between education, religion and politics. The dominant feature in creating a common culture between peoples, each of which has its own distinct heritage and practices, is religion. Globalisation is leading to a redefinition of the state, community and local identity, this latter often perceived as resistance against the forces of unity, whether through culture, economic activity or language. Recent world events have focused attention on the interplay between education, religion and politics like never before. Even more pertinent is the fact that the involvement of politics in decisions about religion and education is often central and impossible to disentangle. Education and Religion covers all the major religious traditions – Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh – and cites global examples throughout the world. It aims to understand the underlying complexities in the struggle to reconcile education, religion and politics in an informative and sensitive way. This book was originally published as a special issue of Comparative Education.

Book The Nazification Of India

Download or read book The Nazification Of India written by Sadaf A. & Faiza Zainab Khan and published by Justice For All. This book was released on 2023-02-20 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world witnessed the horrors of the Holocaust, the result of a strategic plan by the agencies of Hitler, the German fuhrer. Thankfully the world reacted to his machinations, but only after millions of Jewish victims of his hatred, and declared that such horrors should happen, “Never Again”. But those words have not been followed through in international action, and genocides have been repeated time and again since. Each time, the genocide playbook of the Nazis was followed to some degree or the other. India is unique in that its current pogroms against minority populations, the Muslims and Christians of India, follow the Nazi playbook to a degree that cannot be considered as coincidental. India’s Nazis have embraced German Nazi methods, and are emboldened by international inaction in the cases from Rwanda and Burma. They rely on the flawed perception of India as a democracy to shield their pogroms until perhaps it will be too late. This report analyzes twelve parallels between Nazi Germany and India under the regime of Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Acting in conjunction with the largest voluntary paramilitary organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Modi provides the administrative & legal framework to implement the ideology of the RSS, called Hindutva. Deriving from the religion of Hinduism, it is however, an extremist, nationalistic and fascist offshoot that has, from its inception in the early 1900s, sought to marginalize religions originating outside of what is considered as greater India, stretching far beyond the Indian borders of today. The report discusses the supremacist ideas at the core, combined with a yearning of a glorious past, and how it has led to dehumanization, legal and economic repression, vilification, ghettoization, and the destruction of properties, all using the building of a cult figure and paramilitary training even for very young recruits. This deadly machinery is brought to bear on India’s Muslims and to a lesser extent, on India’s Christians, with devastating and demoralizing effect. We hope that the report sheds light on the dire situation for minorities, being created in India by the RSS-BJP regime. It is imperative for the international community to set aside the economic benefits seen in India, and act decisively to prevent what will certainly be mass marginalization, frequent but geographically separated mass killings and continued lynchings, beatings and economic deprivation of a population larger than the entire population of many of the world’s countries. The report ends with recommendations for the United Nations States, Canada, and civil groups to stem the rise of fascism in India and prevent yet another genocide from happening.
