Book AN10 Collection of Numbered Speeches

Download or read book AN10 Collection of Numbered Speeches written by Tomás Morales y Durán and published by Libros de Verdad. This book was released on 2024-03-31 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tenth book of the Aṅguttara Nikāya, the Collection of the Numbered Discourses of the Buddha, collects 746 suttas or discourses whose subject matter is centered on groups of ten topics. The most frequent are the eight components of the eightfold path expanded to ten and also ten components of ethics. This book is especially thick because of the continuous repetitions upon repetitions with very slight variations. The volume is also notable for including extensive content on monastic discipline. As the most outstanding sutta we have AN 10.26: With Kāḷī. Fierce criticism of the Brahmanical meditation methods called "kasinas" which, in early medieval times, were included by Buddhaghosa in his entrance work to a famous Sinhalese monastery and which today some claim as "effective" methods of meditation within Buddhism. The most interesting suttas in this volume are: AN 10.6: Contemplation. Perceiving without perceiving. One of the most curious things one feels when entering current. AN 10.14: Emotional Sterility. Doubts about the Master cause emotional sterility. AN 10.19: Abodes of the Noble Ones (I). When one stops searching. AN 10.29: Kosala (I). Tremendous criticism of wrong practice. AN 10.31: With Upāli. The reasons for the establishment of the monastic code. AN 10.64: Faith. On those who have entered the stream. AN 10.65: Happiness (I). Family and friends who get together and annoy you. AN 10.76: Three things. A beautiful sutta on renunciations. AN 10.92: Dangers. Teaching on perishability and faith. AN 10.108: Physicians: Interesting sutta on physicians and the list of diseases known and treated with varying degrees of success. This book does not contain false suttas. In summary, this time the arduous and exhaustive work of research and reconstruction in comparative linguistics has been especially dense and thick.

Rising through the ranks to become harem treasurer by 1707, he eventually oversaw the educations of crown princes and harem women whilst choosing and deposing a long series of grand viziers. Crown Princess Euren has spent the last five years in hiding so that she could not be used against her father or Ihsan. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shulgi-simti is an important example of a woman involved in sponsoring religious activities though having a family life. An Ox of One’s Own will be of interest to Assyriologists, particularly those interested in Early Mesopotamia, and scholars working on women in religion. An Ox of One’s Own centers on the archive of a woman who died about 2050 B.C., one of King Shulgi’s many wives. Her birth name is unknown, but when she married, she became Shulgi-simti, “Suitable for Shulgi.” Attested for only about 15 years, she existed among a court filled with other wives, who probably outranked her. A religious foundation was run on her behalf whereby courtiers, male and female, donated livestock for sacrifices to an unusual mix of goddesses and gods. Previous scholarship has declared this a rare example of a queen conducting women’s religion, perhaps unusual because they say she came from abroad. The conclusions of this book are quite different. An Ox of One’s Own lays out the evidence that another woman was queen at this time in Nippur while Shulgi-simti lived in Ur and was a third-ranking concubine at best, with few economic resources. Shulgi-simti’s religious exercises concentrated on a quartet of north Babylonian goddesses.

Book Ancient Persia and the Book of Esther

Download or read book Ancient Persia and the Book of Esther written by Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-03-09 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esther is the most visual book of the Hebrew Bible and largely crafted in the Fourth Century BCE by an author who was clearly au fait with the rarefied world of the Achaemenid court. It therefore provides an unusual melange of information which can enlighten scholars of Ancient Iranian Studies whilst offering Biblical scholars access into the Persian world from which the text emerged. In this book, Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones unlocks the text of Esther by reading it against the rich iconographic world of ancient Persia and of the Near East. Ancient Persia and the Book of Esther is a cultural and iconographic exploration of an important, but often undervalued, biblical book, and Llewellyn-Jones presents the book of Esther as a rich source for the study of life and thought in the Persian Empire. The author reveals answers to important questions, such as the role of the King's courtiers in influencing policy, the way concubines at court were recruited, the structure of the harem in shifting the power of royal women, the function of feasting and drinking in the articulation of courtly power, and the meaning of gift-giving and patronage at the Achaemenid court.
