Book Prosecuting Crime in the Public Interest

Download or read book Prosecuting Crime in the Public Interest written by Kellie Toole and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first detailed analysis of the decision to prosecute made by the statutory Australian Offices of Director of Prosecution. It examines the system of prosecution as part of the executive branch of government, and the role and challenges of the individual prosecutors who make decisions within the system. It explores the tension between prosecutorial independence and prosecutorial accountability, and the paradox that political involvement in prosecutions is necessary for accountability and to uphold the public interest, but can compromise independence. The book makes a unique contribution to both Australian criminal law scholarship and to the international literature on criminal prosecution, by drawing on the sub-disciplines of criminal law and administrative law. It includes case studies on prosecuting child sexual abuse, rape, and government espionage, and comparisons with common law and civil law countries including the USA, the UK, Italy and South Africa.

Book Money Politics and Democracy

Download or read book Money Politics and Democracy written by Harold J. Jansen and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-02-08 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2004, Jean Chrtien's Liberals banned corporations and unions from contributing financially to political parties. In 2008, opposition leaders were prepared to defeat the Conservative Party over its proposal to eliminate public subsidies to parties. In this book, prominent political scientists explore the underlying issues that led to the showdown. Are publicly funded parties compatible with democracy? What effects has party finance reform had on elections and on the balance of power between parties and donors and between national parties and local organizations? Contributors show that campaign finance reforms have shaped party organization and electoral competition, contributing to successive minority governments.

Book Citizenship and Democracy

Download or read book Citizenship and Democracy written by Nick Leonen and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1997-09-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of the Towards the New Millennium Series, featuring the works of thoughtful Canadians who are profoundly interested in the future of Canada and the world. Most democracies do not use Canada’s "first past the post" voting system. To give a party more seats than its share of the popular vote warrants is deemed undemocratic by most. Such democracies use proportional representation to ensure a party’s seat-share does not exceed its vote-share. Former MLA, Nick Loenen, examines what proportional representation can do for Canadian politics. He finds that a change to proportional representation holds the potential to involve citizens more meaningfully and give political parties a more significant policy development role. It would also move power from the prime minister’s office to Parliament, and from the premiers to provincial legislatures, shifting the focus in politics from leaders, style and images, to parties, principles and platforms. Instead of the adversarial politics of confrontation, which aim to exclude and eliminate political opponents, proportional representation holds promise for a consensual, cooperative style of governing that includes a broad spectrum of political diversity. The book also counters many popular misconceptions about proportional representation. It traces Canada’s most intractable political problems such as national unity, high taxation, government over-spending, excessive party discipline, the concentration of power in our leaders, and our peculiar archaic voting system. The end product is the most detailed analysis of the effects of proportional representation on Canadian politics ever published.

Book Wealth by Stealth

Download or read book Wealth by Stealth written by H. J. Glasbeek and published by Between The Lines. This book was released on 2002 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that corporations are able to behave irresponsibly, criminally, and undemocratically? "Wealth by Stealth" is a scathing introduction to the operations of the modern corporation, written by a corporate lawyer. Many writers point to the growth of undemocratic corporate power. Glasbeek takes these observations further and outlines clearly how corporations become so powerful. He also shows how they are able to act without regard to the behaviour and laws governing citizens and other groups. Glasbeek is known by generations of students for his brilliant, funny lectures at Osgoode Hall Law School. With "Wealth by Stealth" his informative critique of corporate behaviour becomes available and accessible to all. How is it "The corporation makes them do it"?
