Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Great Depression of the 1930s was a golden age for advertising, as corporate America sought to retain its customer base in the wake of the Crash of '29. For a struggling paper manufacturer in Cloquet, Minnesota, the times were all the more difficult because it had recently invested in costly new machinery. In desperation, the executives of Northwest Paper called in an ad agent from Chicago to boost sales and save the company. Together, they created an ad campaign that would be one of the longest-running and best-known in American commercial history. The name of the firm and its location in the north woods of Minnesota provided the inspiration for a series of story-ads featuring the adventures of the North West Mounted Police of Canada." "The sixteen artists who worked on the Mountie series between 1931 and 1970 were among the most famous commercial illustrators of their day. The first of these was Hal Foster, who later created the Prince Valiant comic strip. Another, the most prolific "Mountie" artist, was Arnold Friberg, who stayed with the project for thirty-three years. Friberg's Mounted Police pictures are much sought-after by collectors and are still in circulation in the form of calendars, pamphlets, and other printed materials."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book All Amazed

    Book Details:
  • Author : John O'Brian

  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book All Amazed written by John O'Brian and published by arsenal pulp press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Amazed celebrates the life and work of the late Roy Kiyooka (1926-1994), one of Canada's first multi-disciplinary artists whose work transcended categorical and cultural exclusivity. At various periods of his life, Kiyooka was a painter, sculptor, teacher, poet, musician, filmmaker, and photographer. When Kiyooka arrived in Vancouver in 1959, he was already one of Canada's most respected abstract painters. His modernist stance at the time inspired a generation of Vancouver painters to reach beyond regionalism. In the sixties and seventies, Kiyooka began to write and publish poetry and produce photographic works; the best known of these, StoneDGloves (1969-1970), is both a poetic and photographic project. In all of his projects, he saw the position of the artist as being in opposition to the institutions of art. The shape and scope of Kiyooka's work continues to be revealed, seven years after his death. Based on a major multidisciplinary conference at the University of British Columbia organized by such luminaries as Michael Ondaatje, Daphne Marlatt, Scott Watson, and John O'Brian, All Amazed pays tribute to a remarkable artist and poet who continues to amaze and astound us. Includes essays by Roy Miki, Henry Tsang, Sheryl Conkelton, and Scott Toguri McFarlane, as well as numerous black and white images of Kiyooka's artwork.

Book The History of Canada Series War in the St Lawrence

Download or read book The History of Canada Series War in the St Lawrence written by Roger Sarty and published by Penguin Canada. This book was released on 2012-04-17 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1942 to 1944, 15 German submarines destroyed or severely damaged 27 ships, including three Canadian warships, a U.S. Army troop transport, and the Newfoundland ferry Caribou. More than 250 lives were lost. It was the only battle of the twentieth century to take place within Canada’s boundaries, and the only battle to be fought almost exclusively by Canadian forces under Canadian, rather than alliance, high command. And for more than 40 years the battle was characterized as a Canadian defeat. But was it a defeat? Drawing on new material from wartime records—including ultra-top-secret Allied decryptions of German naval radio communications, Roger Sarty shows that Canada mounted a successful defence with far fewer resources and in the face of much greater challenges than previously known. He draws vivid pictures of the intense combat on Canada’s shores and the interplay of the St Lawrence battle with war politics in Ottawa, Washington and London. At the same time, he weaves a second story: how researchers reassembled the scattered war records in Canada, Britain, the United States and Germany and brought the long-forgotten battle to life for new generations of Canadians and international audiences.
