Book Selected Verse Anthems

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Blow
  • Publisher : A-R Editions, Inc.
  • Release : 2009-01-01
  • ISBN : 0895796511
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Selected Verse Anthems written by John Blow and published by A-R Editions, Inc.. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eight verse anthems in this edition constitute the only full scores of works in Blow's hand that survive in this abundant genre. The scores are located in two manuscripts that are now parts of the collections at Christ Church, Oxford, and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The Oxford manuscript includes five anthems from the 1670s, and each displays a variety of structural and musical-rhetoric procedures, making them ideal representatives of Blow's multifaceted early style. The Cambridge manuscript dates from ca. 1704 and contains three late works on a much larger scale. As a group, the later anthems require considerably greater virtuosity from the solo singers, and individual verse sections grow both longer and more numerous. As representative examples within a much larger repertoire, the works selected for this edition help to reveal important facets in the career of the first person to hold the title, Composer of the Chapel Royal.

Book Ash Wednesday to Easter for Choirs

Download or read book Ash Wednesday to Easter for Choirs written by Lionel Dakers and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection aims to provide a comprehensive survey of a highly significant part of the Christian Year: Ash Wednesday and Lent, Passiontide, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter. Its contents span all musical periods of what is a marvellously rich area of church music and it contains much that is not widely available elsewhere under one cover. Ash Wednesday to Easter for Choirs includes a number of less familiar works together with new or recent arrangements of well-known tunes, such as Philip Ledger's 'This joyful Eastertide', Simon Lindley's 'Now the green blade riseth', and Bob Chilcott's setting of 'Were you there?'. Some of the anthems, for example Richard Shephard's 'Sing, my tongue' and Grayston Ives' 'Ride on', have been newly commissioned specifically for this collection, thus filling certain gaps. Wherever possible new practical performing editions of 16th-century repertoire have been prepared, reflecting current scholarship and including an English singing translation and, where, the original had none, a dynamic scheme. Such dynamics are the editors' suggestions only and may be freely ignored or adapted. Note values have in some instances been halved. Unaccompanied items include keyboard reductions for rehearsal.

Book The Anthems of East Central Europe

Download or read book The Anthems of East Central Europe written by Csaba G. Kiss and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-21 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book juxtaposes national anthems of thirteen countries from central Europe, with the aim of initiating a dialogue among the peoples of East-Central Europe. We tend to perceive a national anthem as a particular mirror, involuntarily reflecting an image of nation and homeland; but how does it represent the community for whom it sounds? To answer this question, the book deploys a comparative approach – anthems are presented in the light of those of neighbouring countries, with the conviction that one of the key features of true Europeanness is good relations between neighbours. The development trajectory of the modern nation is the context in which the book examines the history of such national symbols, alongside the symbolic content of poetry, images of the homeland and nation depicted in the anthems, as well as the sometimes longer processes which led to the adoption and legal codification of current state symbols. The Anthems of East-Central Europe will be a great resource for researchers, journalists, college and university students, politicians trying to impact emigrees from this region and emigrees themselves.
