Book Roy Lichtenstein in His Studio

Download or read book Roy Lichtenstein in His Studio written by Laurie Lambrecht and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy Lichtenstein in His Studio is a portfolio of vivid and engaging photographs by Laurie Lambrecht, who was an administrative assistant to Lichtenstein for three years. She and the artist worked together daily, and the bond between them is evident in the photographs. Lichtenstein is shown working on two major series, Reflections and The Interiors. He is completely absorbed, oblivious to the camera, as he mounts ladders, assembles colors, composes, and steps back to consider the effect. During this period Lambrecht assisted in gathering material for a major retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. As a result, the photographs include scrapbooks and sketchbooks and other archival material that document Lichtenstein’s entire career. There are stencils of Ben-Day dots, clippings from newspapers and comic books, Polaroid snapshots, rolls of tape, and boxes of colored pencils. Lichtenstein encouraged Lambrecht to make photographs and was often pleased and amused by the results. These images offer fascinating insight into Lichtenstein’s working processes and source materials, as well as being vibrant works of art in their own right. In her essay Dorothy Lichtenstein, wife of the artist, recalls the collegial atmosphere of the studios in New York and Southampton in the early 1990s, a time of extraordinary productivity. Edward Robinson, an associate curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, describes Lambrecht’s process and approach.

Book Roy Lichtenstein

  • Author : Elizabeth Finch
  • Publisher : Rizzoli Publications
  • Release : 2020-09-08

  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book Roy Lichtenstein written by Elizabeth Finch and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2020-09-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy before he was Lichtenstein: the path to becoming a Pop Art titan began with Lichtenstein's cycling through a provocative range of visual culture, from fairy tales and children's and folk art to mythic forms of Americana, such as cowboys and Disney. Roy Lichtenstein: History in the Making, 1948-1960 is the first major museum exhibition to investigate the early work of one of the best-known American artists of the twentieth century. Co-organized by Colby College Museum of Art and Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, the exhibition will include approximately ninety works from the artist's fruitful and formative early career, many never before seen by the public. The show and accompanying catalog will include paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints which reveal an artist, even in the earliest stages of his career, with a keen interest in visual culture, culling--with a critical eye--from a wide range of sources. These inspirations were the essential but little-known precursors to the artist's later sourcing of comic books and advertisements. Likewise, his exploration of abstraction, just before the artist's abrupt turn to Pop Art in 1961, straddles the line between unabashed lyricism and wry critique of second-generation Abstract Expressionism. The catalog, with new scholarship by leading experts in the field, provides a new understanding of Lichtenstein's influential techniques of appropriation and offers the opportunity to more fully assess the artistic and cultural dynamism of postwar America.

Book Roy Lichtenstein Greene Street Mural

Download or read book Roy Lichtenstein Greene Street Mural written by Camille Morineau and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful book chronicles the creation of the original 1983 Greene Street Mural by Roy Lichtenstein at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, as well as Gagosian Gallery’s recent 2015 iteration, which introduced a new generation of viewers to this magnificent project. In Greene Street Mural, Roy Lichtenstein layered pervasive images from his pop lexicon—marble-patterned composition notebooks, cartoonish brushstrokes, and Swiss cheese—with motifs, including the Neo-Geo tropes of his Perfect/Imperfect paintings; faux woodblock shading patterns; and office items, including filing cabinets, envelopes, and folding chairs. Using stunning color photographs, interviews, and essays, this new book presents Lichtenstein’s almost 100-foot-long mural, which epitomized the artist’s ability to absorb anything and everything that caught his eye into his constantly evolving artistic idiom.

Book excerpt: "Lichtenstein, who devoted himself seriously to printmaking earlier than any other major artist of his generation (he made his first two prints in 1948 - a lithograph and a woodcut - and by 1950 had added etching and screenprint to his repertoire), is widely acknowledged as one of the most important printmakers of our time. Printmaking often provides him with an arena in which he is at his most experimental, apt to try something new, especially with materials." "The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein catalogues and reproduces each of the artist's prints, as well as original posters, book and magazine illustrations, announcements, etc., 350 in all. Every work that is color in the original is reproduced in color. The volume's reference value is enhanced by a Chronology, Exhibition History, Bibliography, Concordances, and Index."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
