Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The histories of Roxbury and Bridgewater are intertwined, as both communities developed from settlement to ecclesiastical society to incorporated town. Both were once part of larger adjoining towns, with Bridgewater originally known as Shepaug Neck and Roxbury first named Shepaug Plantation. Shepaug is a Mohegan word meaning "rocky river" and was taken from the name of the river that runs through Bridgewater and forms Roxbury's western border. While settlers first plowed the land, they also built homes, schools, and churches and constructed gristmills, blacksmith shops, hat factories, tobacco warehouses, taverns, and general stores. Townsmen mined iron ore and quarried stones in the hills. Over time, the horse and buggy gave way to railroads and automobiles as modes of transportation between the towns, while new inventions gave locals free time for entertainment and civic pursuits.

Book The History of Roxbury Town Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Roxbury Town Classic Reprint written by Charles M. Ellis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Roxbury Town The object of a town history is to gather up and record family, local, village details. Part are those of every day life. Part belong to general history, but are so minute or multitudinous as to escape its grasp. Yet all history is made up of these, and each, and the group of each town, may illustrate it, as the life of each man will give some insight into the spirit of his time. There is an interest attached to these accounts of small places, of the same sort as that which is ex cited by the biography of an individual. We like to know the motives, reasons and method of a man's ac tion, as every child wishes to see a watch opened. In general men care less for the result, however great, than for the petty moving causes in operation. And the idea that each man is a wheel in the great ma chine, weighs more with men than they think. But, after all, the chief interest attached to these matters is of a very different sort, and, if this were the place. Book The Romance of Wisconsin Place Names

Download or read book The Romance of Wisconsin Place Names written by Robert E. Gard and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The names of places lie upon the land and tell us where we are or where we have been or where we want to go. And so much more.”—From the introduction Fifty years ago, educator and writer Robert E. Gard traveled across Wisconsin, learning the trivial, controversial, and landmark stories behind how cities, counties, and local places got their names. This volume records the fruits of Gard’s labors in an alphabetical listing of places from every corner of Wisconsin, and the stories behind their often-unusual names. Gard’s work provides an important snapshot of how Wisconsin residents of a bygone era came to understand the names of their towns and home places, many of which can no longer be found on any map. Celebrated rural historian Jerry Apps introduces this reprint of Gard’s work, saying that in “some ways The Romance of Wisconsin Place Names is a reference book, a place where you can go to learn a little more about your home town. But in many ways it is much more than that, for it includes the stories of places throughout the state, submitted by the people who knew them. It is a book where story, people, and place all come together.”

Book Boston and Its Story 1630 1915

Download or read book Boston and Its Story 1630 1915 written by Edward Mussey Hartnell and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 1916 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is twofold: (1) to furnish a clue to the history of Boston as an individual community that, owing to the force of circumstances and the spirit of its people, has played a conspicuous and influential part in the larger development of Massachusetts, of New England and of the nation; and (2) to indicate the nature of the events that gave historical significance to memorable sites and objects that have survived the ravages of time and still excite interest and veneration. So it is not a history that it presents to the reader, but rather a relation or narrative concerning the development of "a poor country village" into a great city of vast and varied interests and of commanding rank.
