Book Routledge Revivals The Commerce of Nations 1923

Download or read book Routledge Revivals The Commerce of Nations 1923 written by C.F. Bastable and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1929, this book was written to express the belief that nations’ commercial policy and doctrines could best be explained by reference to their history. The author argues that this applies equally to legislation and theory, for example both the McKinley Act of 1890 and contemporaneous protectionism are examined as the culmination of a century’s worth of legislative and theoretical progress. This edition is also updated from the original 1891 publication to take account of the effect of the First World War on the European and American tariff systems, and also how the preferential system of trade within the British Empire recast relations between Britain and its dominions.

Book The Evolution of Modern Capitalism Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Evolution of Modern Capitalism Routledge Revivals written by J. A. Hobson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hobson’s The Evolution of Modern Capitalism was first published in 1894, although this reissue is of the fourth edition, published in 1926. The work traces the developments in trade and industry which characterised the first decades of the twentieth century. In the first part, Hobson deals with the origins and structure of modern capitalism, including the development of the machine industry, the changing structure of trades and markets, and the effects of these on workers and consumers. The final supplementary chapter considers the impact of World War I on this changing economy, and the ‘disturbance, recovery and readjustments’ which the war necessitated. This is a classic work of importance to economic historians and those with a particular interest in the history of capitalism.

Book The Economies of Africa and Asia in the Inter war Depression Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Economies of Africa and Asia in the Inter war Depression Routledge Revivals written by Ian Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great inter-war depression has long been seen as an unprecedented economic disaster for the peoples of the non-European world. This book, with its detailed assessment of the impact of the depression on the economies of Africa and Asia, challenges the orthodox view, and is essential reading for those with a teaching or research interest in the modern economic history of those continents. Established specialists in the modern economic history of parts of Africa or Asia put forward a number of revisionist arguments. They show that some economies were left essentially unscathed by the depression, and that for many export-dependent peasant communities which did face a severe drop in cash income as world commodity prices collapsed from the late 1920s, there was a range of important responses and reactions by which they could defend their economic welfare. For many peasant communities the depression was not a disaster but an opportunity.

Book Building Capitalism Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Building Capitalism Routledge Revivals written by Linda Clarke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992, this Routledge Revival sees the reissue of a truly original exploration of the nature of urbanization and capitalism. Linda Clarke’s vital work argues that: Urbanization is a product of the social human labour engaged in building as well as a concentration of the labour force. The quality of the labour process determines the development of production. Changes to the built environment reflect changes in the production process and, in particular, the development of wage labour. To support these arguments, the author identifies a qualitatively new historical stage of capitalist building production involving a significant expansion of wage labour, and hence capital, and the transition from artisan to industrial production. Linda Clarke draws from a wide range of original material relating to the development of London from the mid-eighteenth to the early nineteenth century to provide a complete description of the development process: materials extraction, roadbuilding, housebuilding, paving, cleansing, etc; profiles of builders and contractors involved, and a picture of the new working class communities, as in Somers Town – their living conditions, population, working environment, and politics.

Book Revival Economics and Ethics 1923

Book excerpt: The argument of this book is addressed to those who desire to order their daily lives, in the homme, in the shop, in the factory, or on the farm, in conformity with the highest ethical standards, or in more familiar words, to live according to the will of God; and to them only. They constitute, I hope, a large proportion of mankind but be that as it ma, I know that there are at present among them many who are sorely perplexed in mind, and gravely disturbed in conscience, by the apparent contradiction between the precepts of ethics and the laws of economics. It is my earnest hope that in this book they mind some help towards the solution of their difficulties

Book Theories of Surplus and Transfer Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Theories of Surplus and Transfer Routledge Revivals written by Helen Heslop and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, this is an analysis of the history of western economics from Petty to Supply-Side, through the prism of the controversies over productive labour and its product. It treats the early economists’ "productive-unproductive" dichotomies as shorthands for many other sets of distinctions relevant for boundaries, value and welfare. Central to the debates is the question of whether the economy is said to generate a ‘surplus’. Economists and politicians with views on these matters include the Physiocrats, Smith and Ricardo, Marx and his Soviet and western admirers, the marginalists, Keynes, Polanyi, Becker, and Reagan. The book maps the shifting emphases that economists and social thinkers have placed on markets and ‘mode’ of production generally. This reissue will be useful to students of economic thought, welfare theory and policy, growth economics and economic systems.

Book The Personal Distribution of Incomes Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Personal Distribution of Incomes Routledge Revivals written by A. B. Atkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 298 pages. The papers were first presented at the Royal Economic Society’s conference in 1974, which examined the evidence concerning the personal distribution of earnings, compared the distributions apparent in different periods and societies, and studied the association between personal attributes and income. The contributions, from internationally-renowned authors, reflect these areas, and address the questions surrounding inequality, the taxation of wealth and capital transfers that remain relevant in twenty-first century society.
