Book excerpt: In support of the Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL) vision of the layered sensing operations center, command and control intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance (C2ISR) more focus must be placed on architectures that support information systems, rather than just the information systems themselves. By extending the role of UAVs beyond simply intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations and into a dual-role with networking operations we can better utilize our information assets. To achieve the goal of dual-role UAVs, a concrete approach to planning must be taken. This research defines a mathematical model and a non-trivial deterministic algorithmic approach to determining UAV placement to support ad-hoc network capability, while maintaining the valuable service of surveillance activities.

Book excerpt: Relying on unmanned autonomous flight control programs, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with radio communication devices have been actively developed around the world. Given their low cost, flexible maneuvering and unmanned operation, UAVs have been widely used in both civilian operations and military missions, including environmental monitoring, emergency communications, express distribution, even military surveillance and attacks, for example. Given that a range of standards and protocols used in terrestrial wireless networks are not applicable to UAV networks, and that some practical constraints such as battery power and no-fly zone hinder the maneuverability capability of a single UAV, we need to explore advanced communication and networking theories and methods for the sake of supporting future ultra-reliable and low-latency applications. Typically, the full potential of UAV network’s functionalities can be tapped with the aid of the cooperation of multiple drones relying on their ad hoc networking, in-network communications and coordinated control. Furthermore, some swarm intelligence models and algorithms conceived for dynamic negotiation, path programming, formation flight and task assignment of multiple cooperative drones are also beneficial in terms of extending UAV’s functionalities and coverage, as well as of increasing their efficiency. We call the networking and cooperation of multiple drones as the terminology ‘flying ad hoc network (FANET)’, and there indeed are numerous new challenges to be overcome before the idespread of so-called heterogeneous FANETs. In this book, we examine a range of technical issues in FANETs, from physical-layer channel modeling to MAC-layer resource allocation, while also introducing readers to UAV aided mobile edge computing techniques.

Dynamic vehicle routing problems (VRP) have always been challenging, and the airborne version of the VRP adds dimensions and difficulties not present in typical ground-based applications. Previous UAV routing work has focused on primarily on static, pre-planned situations; however, scheduling military operations, which are often ad-hoc, drives the need for a dynamic route solver that can respond to rapidly evolving problem constraints. With these considerations in mind, we examine the use of a Java-encoded metaheuristic to solve these dynamic routing problems, explore its operation with several general problem classes, and look at the advantages it provides in sample UAV routing problems. The end routine provides routing information for a UAV virtual battlespace simulation and allows dynamic routing of operational missions.

Book excerpt: Cooperative Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) teams are anticipated to provide much needed support for human intelligence, measurement and signature intelligence, signals intelligence, imagery intelligence, and open source intelligence through algorithms, software, and automation. Therefore, it is necessary to have autonomous algorithms that route multiple UAVs effectively and efficiently throughout missions and that these are realizable in the real-world given the associated uncertainties. Current routing strategies ignore communication constraints altogether. In reality, communication can be restricted by bandwidth, line-of-sight, maximum communication ranges, or a need for uninterrupted transmission. Generating autonomous algorithms that work effectively around these communication constraints is key for the future of UAV surveillance applications. In this work, both current and new routing strategies for UAVS are analyzed to determine how communications impact efficiency of information return. It is shown that under certain communication conditions, a new approach on routing can be more efficient than typically adopted strategies. This new approach defines and presents a new formulation based on a minimum delivery latency objective function. The problem is formulated such that information is not considered delivered until it is returned back to a high-bandwidth connection (depot) which is common when communication is restricted. The size of the region is shown to be dependent upon distance between requests, UAV bandwidth, UAV velocity, and data size, but it was shown that for large-sized data, long distances, and low bandwidth, it is generally better to route UAVs with this new minimum latency objective. With the added decision of when to deliver information to a high-bandwidth connection, an already computationally complex problem grows even faster. Because of scaling issues, a heuristic algorithm was developed that was constructed by analyzing the optimal solution. The algorithm is a cluster-first, route-second approach, but differs from conventional Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) solutions in that the number of clusters is not necessarily equal to the number of vehicles. Because of this, a unique approach to clustering is adopted to form clusters using hierarchical agglomerative clustering and fuzzy logic. Based on a detailed Monte Carlo analysis, the heuristic algorithm showed near-optimal (within ~5%) results calculable in real-time (allowing it to be used in dynamic scenarios too) and scaled to much larger problem sizes. Furthermore, the performance was analyzed under varying degrees of dynamism and arrival rates. Results showed good performance, and found the boundaries for the regions of light and heavy load cases for a single vehicle to be about 0.3 and 4 requests an hour, respectively. Finally, both static and dynamic cases were validated in flight testing, highlighting the usability of this approach.

Nonetheless, combined terrestrial and UAV communication improving network coverage and Quality of Service by leveraging line-of-sight communication as well as minimizing the delay and age-of-information for UAV-to-ground communication. Despite its numerous advantages, the deployment of UAVs faces different challenges with respect to wireless networks, ranging from radio resource management to UAVs' trajectory under energy limitation constraint and minimal knowledge of the environment. To this end, this dissertation aims to address the challenges in the efficient deployment of UAVs in future networks under various performance metrics. The key goal of this dissertation is to provide the analytical foundations for deployment, learning, in-depth analysis, and optimization of UAV-assisted wireless communication networks. Towards achieving this goal, this dissertation makes significant contributions to several areas of UAV-assisted wireless communication networks within the contexts of static environments as well as high mobility environments. For the deployment of UAVs in static environments such as Internet of Things (IoT) wireless networks, various tools such as optimization theory and machine learning frameworks are employed to enable UAV trajectory design under different scenarios and performance metrics. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed designs. In particular, UAVs adapt their mobility and altitude to enable reliable and energy-efficient communication, to maximize service for IoT applications, and to maintain the freshness of information. For the deployment of UAVs in high mobility environments such as vehicular networks, unique design challenges are considered and carefully handled to guarantee the effective performance of the UAV. Particularly, the high mobility of the vehicles leads to distinct network conditions and changes the network topology. The challenge here is that designing an efficient deployment of UAVs while considering the complex and dynamic network conditions is not a trivial task. This challenge was addressed through comprehensive studies that led to effective, robust, and high-performance solutions. Different performance metrics such as coverage, age of information, throughput, and Quality of Service were evaluated and compared with other approaches. Results shed light on the trade-offs in the vehicular network such as throughput-latency when exploiting UAV mobility for service. The findings in this dissertation highlight key guidelines for the effective design of UAV-assisted wireless communication networks. More insights on the efficient deployment of UAVs in static and high mobility environments are provided in order to assist and enhance communication in future networks while considering the unique features of UAVs such as their flight time, mobility, energy budget, and altitude.
