Book Integrating Strangers in Society

Download or read book Integrating Strangers in Society written by Jos D. M. Platenkamp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a uniquely positioned contribution to the current debates on the integration of immigrants in Europe. Twelve social anthropologists—“strangers by vocation”—reflect upon how they were taken in by those they studied over the course of their long-term fieldwork. The societies concerned are Sinti (northern Italy), Inuit (Canadian Arctic), Kanak (New Caledonia), Māori (New Zealand), Lanten (Laos), Tobelo and Tanebar-Evav (Indonesia), Banyoro (Uganda), Gawigl and Siassi (Papua New Guinea) and a township in Odisha (India). A comparative analysis of these reflexive, ethnographic accounts reveals as yet underrepresented, non-European perspectives on the issue of integrating strangers, enabling the reader to identify and reflect upon the uniquely Western ideals and values that currently dominate such discourse.

Book Classes of Labour

Download or read book Classes of Labour written by Jonathan Parry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classes of Labour: Work and Life in a Central Indian Steel Town is a classic in the social sciences. The rigour and richness of the ethnographic data of this book and its analysis is matched only by its literary style. This magnum opus of 732 pages, an outcome of fieldwork covering twenty-one years, complete with diagrams and photographs, reads like an epic novel, difficult to put down. Professor Jonathan Parry looks at a context in which the manual workforce is divided into distinct social classes, which have a clear sense of themselves as separate and interests that are sometimes opposed. The relationship between them may even be one of exploitation; and they are associated with different lifestyles and outlooks, kinship and marriage practices, and suicide patterns. A central concern is with the intersection between class, caste, gender and regional ethnicity, with how class trumps caste in most contexts and with how classes have become increasingly structured as the ‘structuration’ of castes has declined. The wider theoretical ambition is to specify the general conditions under which the so-called ‘working class’ has any realistic prospect of unity.

Book That Day It Rained And Other Stories

The author calls herself a bohemian and travels around the globe in a caravan which is driven by rape, lust, lies, forbidden love, mental illness, homicide and death. This book had been crafted sitting in that caravan lost in myriad textures and flavours, with those mental demons screaming her to stop. She did not listen. The book which unleashes the dark domain of human mind makes it a compelling read.
