Book Rounding Errors in Algebraic Processes

Download or read book Rounding Errors in Algebraic Processes written by James Hardy Wilkinson and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2023-05-25 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[This book] combines a rigorous mathematical analysis with a practicality that stems from an obvious first-hand contact with the actual numerical computation. The well-chosen examples alone show vividly both the importance of the study of rounding errors and the perils of its neglect." A. A. Grau, SIAM Review (1966) Rounding Errors in Algebraic Processes was the first book to give systematic analyses of the effects of rounding errors on a variety of key computations involving polynomials and matrices. A detailed analysis is given of the rounding errors made in the elementary arithmetic operations and inner products, for both floating-point arithmetic and fixed-point arithmetic. The results are then applied in the error analyses of a variety of computations involving polynomials as well as the solution of linear systems, matrix inversion, and eigenvalue computations. The conditioning of these problems is investigated. The aim was to provide a unified method of treatment, and emphasis is placed on the underlying concepts. This book is intended for mathematicians, computer scientists, those interested in the historical development of numerical analysis, and students in numerical analysis and numerical linear algebra.

Book Currency Amounts in the SDR Basket Proposed Changes to the Rounding Methodology

This book was released on 2016-07-13 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currency amounts are used to determine the daily value of the SDR. Currency amounts are the number of units of each currency in the SDR basket. The value of the SDR (in U.S. dollars) is the sum of these amounts, valued at daily exchange rates of the currencies against the U.S. dollar. These currency amounts are determined on the last business day before the new SDR basket becomes effective (transition date) such that they correspond to the currency weights determined by the IMF Executive Board in the context of the SDR Review, and remain fixed over the SDR valuation period. To facilitate SDR users in adjusting their portfolios to the new basket, the IMF publishes illustrative currency amounts in the lead up to the transition date.

Book Rounding the Horn

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dallas Murphy
  • Publisher : Basic Books
  • Release : 2009-03-17
  • ISBN : 0786738731
  • Pages : 378 pages

Download or read book Rounding the Horn written by Dallas Murphy and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For as far back as he can remember, Dallas Murphy has been sea-struck. Since he began to read, "besotted by salt-water dreams and nautical language," he studied the lore surrounding a place of mythic proportions: the ever-alluring Cape Horn. And after years of dreaming -- and sailing -- he finally made his voyage there. In this lively, thrilling blend of history, geography, and modern-day adventure, Murphy shows how the myth crossed wakes with his reality. Cape Horn is a buttressed pyramid of crumbly rock situated at the very bottom of South America -- 55 degrees 59 minutes South by 67 degrees 16 minutes West. It's a place of forlorn and foreboding beauty, one that has captured the dark imaginations of explorers and writers from Francis Drake to Joseph Conrad. For centuries, the small stretch of water between Cape Horn and the Antarctic peninsula was the only gateway between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and it's a place where the storms are bigger, the winds stronger, the seas rougher than anywhere else on earth. Rounding the Horn is the ultimate maritime rite of passage, and in Murphy's hands, it becomes a thrilling, exuberant tour. Weaving together stories of his own nautical adventures with long-lost tales of those who braved the Cape before him -- from Spanish missionaries to Captain Cook -- and interspersed with breathtaking descriptions of the surrounding wilderness, the result is a beautifully crafted, immensely enjoyable read.
