Book The Ditch

  • Author : Herman Koch
  • Publisher : Hogarth
  • Release : 2019-06-11

  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book The Ditch written by Herman Koch and published by Hogarth. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bracing and inventive new novel of suspicions and secrecy from Herman Koch, the New York Times bestselling author of The Dinner When Robert Walter, popular mayor of Amsterdam, sees his wife toss her head back with laughter while chatting to one of his aldermen at a New Year's reception, he immediately suspects the worst. Despite their long and happy marriage, Robert is convinced that Sylvia is cheating on him—with the respectable alderman who is dedicated to the environment, no less. The man who wants to spoil the capital's skyline with wind turbines. The New Year's reception marks the end of the “happy family” era that the mayor has enjoyed for so long. His wife and their daughter, Diana, however, are not aware of his suspicions and carry on as usual. Robert starts spending a lot of time and energy “behaving normally.” Naturally, his normal behavior is far more suspicious. Normally Robert's not really present when he's at home--he's preoccupied with his phone, the newspapers, and his own thoughts. But now Robert is so sure he'll miss the clues if he doesn't pay attention that he starts to be almost alarmingly attentive and interested--ultimately losing himself in increasingly panicked and paranoid trains of thought. Written with Herman Koch's trademark originality, playfulness, and edge, The Ditch is a wildly clever—and guttingly familiar—story of a man whose sadistic skill for undermining himself and his marriage comes to cost him nearly everything. Praise for The Ditch “Provocation, life in the spotlight and tasty cuisine are also present and accounted for in Koch’s spiky new book, The Ditch. . . . Koch again seeks to show the fault lines beneath the surface of ostensibly civilized society.”—The New York Times Book Review “Clever, rollicking, and intense . . . an unreliable tale for the ages.”—Vanity Fair “Koch has crafted a pitch-perfect tone for a man consumed by jealousy. . . . A shadowy tale of the power of projection.”—Kirkus Reviews “A compelling exploration by a master stylist of what jealousy and distrust can do even to a solid relationship.”—Booklist

Told with humor and dry wit, these extraordinary stories of pioneering struggles, deep religious divisions, and conflict within the family help navigate the history of Australia—from the abundance of the eastern Byron Bay hinterland to the hardships of the northern soldier-settler farm in North Queensland. Fascinating and engaging, this familial recollection is a revealing study of Australia's past.

Book excerpt: "Reads like a crazed cross between Watership Down and Nineteen Eighty-Four." --The Guardian "Every book of Fforde's seems to be a cause for celebration." -- Charles Yu, The New York Times Book Review on Early Riser A new stand-alone novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Early Riser and the Thursday Next series England, 2022. There are 1.2 million human-size rabbits living in the UK. They can walk, talk, drive cars, and they like to read Voltaire, the result of an Inexplicable Anthropomorphizing Event fifty-five years before. A family of rabbits is about to move into Much Hemlock, a cozy little village in Middle England where life revolves around summer fetes, jam making, gossipy corner stores, and the oh-so-important Best Kept Village awards. No sooner have the rabbits arrived than the villagers decide they must depart, citing their propensity to burrow and breed, and their shameless levels of veganism. But Mrs Constance Rabbit is made of sterner stuff, and her and her family decide they are to stay. Unusually, their neighbors--longtime resident Peter Knox and his daughter, Pippa--decide to stand with them . . . . and soon discover that you can be a friend to rabbits or humans, but not both. With a blossoming romance, acute cultural differences, enforced rehoming to a MegaWarren in Wales, and the full power of the ruling United Kingdom Anti-Rabbit Party against them, Peter and Pippa are about to question everything they had ever thought about their friends, their nation, and their species. An inimitable blend of satire, fantasy, and thriller, The Constant Rabbit is the latest dazzlingly original foray into Jasper Fforde's ever-astonishing creative genius.

Book Have You Seen the Rabbit in the Nut

Download or read book Have You Seen the Rabbit in the Nut written by Simon Bailey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-03-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel follows the life of the character Rob Jordan and is divided into three sections; Shouting to myself, Nine out of ten videos are shit and Because of the ants. In the first section, set in 1994, Rob is a struggling newly qualified teacher; lonely and frustrated at home and depressed at work. In section two, in 1999, Rob has been promoted to the dole and spends his time fantasising about murdering his vicar flatmate, whilst becoming involved in an ill-fated love triangle. The last section, set in 2004, sees Rob on the run and a series of flashbacks reveal that he has killed a man. The tone is comic but the novel does attempt to deal with contemporary issues. At a rough estimate, there is a profound slice of wisdom about every six gags. Six and a half maximum. And if you are still not convinced, if you do read a more amusing book about teaching or being on the dole this millennium, you get a free rabbit in a nut. Guaranteed.
