Download or read book Round About Industrial Britain 1830 1860 written by Charles R. Fay and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1955-12-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a description of a lively and unusual tour of industrial Britain in the period which reached its public climax in the Great Exhibition of 1851. Professor Fay sets his tour in the heart of the "stream of industrial invention" in the fields of metals, machinery, transportation, and industrial arts such as spinning, weaving, and paper-making. We travel with him through the industrial sections of Britain, observing conditions in the steel industries of Sheffield, the mines of Merthyr Tydfil, the shipyards of the Clyde, and the factories of Bradford. We see social, economic, and financial conditions in these areas, presented often through contemporary documents, and meet such significant, colourful figures as Adam Smith, Faraday, and Robert Owen.
Download or read book Britain to America written by William E. Van Vugt and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1820 to 1860, the United States and Great Britain were the two most closely interconnected countries in the world in terms of culture and economic growth. In an important addition to immigration history, William Van Vugt explores who came to America from Great Britain during this period and why. Disruptions and economic hardships, such as the repeal of Britain's protective Corn Laws, the potato famine, and technological displacement, do not account for the great mid-century surge of British migration to America. Rather than desperation and impoverishment, Van Vugt finds that immigrants were motivated by energy, tenacity, and ambition to improve their lives by taking advantage of opportunities in America. Drawing on county histories, passenger lists of immigrant ships, census data, and manuscript collections in Great Britain and the United States, Van Vugt sketches the lives and fortunes of dozens of immigrant farmers, miners, artisans, skilled and unskilled laborers, professionals, and religious nonconformists.
Download or read book The Minor Marshallians and Alfred Marshall written by Peter Groenewegen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Marshall, Professor of Economics at Cambridge University (1885-1908), produced a distinguished a distinguished crop of students, many of them leaders in the economics profession in subsequent generations. Pigou, Keynes and Denis Robertson are undoubtedly the most famous of these Marshall ‘pupils’ but there were many more, even if more minor forces in the development of early twentieth century economics. This book intends to examine the major work of ten of these ‘minor’ Marshallians – Sydney John Chapman (1871-1951), John Harold Clapham (1873-1946), Charles Ryle Fay (1884-1961), Alfred William Flux (1867-1942), Frederick Lavington (1881-1927), Walter Thomas Layton (1884-1966), David Huchinson MacGregor (1827-1953), Joseph Shield Nicholson (1850-1927), Charles Percy Sanger (1871-1930) and Gerald Francis Shove (1888-1947), to name them in alphabetical order. The broad aim of this book is to evaluate the more important contributions of these ‘minor’ Marshallians by selective examination of their major economic work. That evaluation has at least two dimensions. First, it focuses on the significance of the author’s individual contributions to the development of twentieth century economic thought. Secondly, it attempts to assess the Marshallian credentials of these contributions in order to indicate how Marshallian in their economics these ‘pupils’ of Marshall’s economics teaching actually stayed.
