Book Roughness Progression on KDOT Asphalt Pavements

Download or read book Roughness Progression on KDOT Asphalt Pavements written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, roughness of 17 pavement sections, built between 1998 and 2001 were analyzed. These sections were constructed over different subgrade and base types, and different asphalt binder aggregates were used. Annual roughness data was collected from the Pavement Management Information System database of the Kansas Department of Transportation. In addition, five new sections, built over the last three years, were also monitored. Roughness data on these sections were collected periodically. International Roughness Index (IRI) was used as the roughness statistic for analyzing both types of sections.

Book Modeling the Roughness Progression on Kansas Portland Cement Concrete PCC Pavements

Download or read book Modeling the Roughness Progression on Kansas Portland Cement Concrete PCC Pavements written by Victoria Felker and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term prediction of the performance and durability of pavement represents a critical and vital issue in the pavement surface type selection process by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) using the life-cycle-cost analysis. Accurate prediction of roughness progression on Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavements is very important since the current model used by KDOT is based on the pavement serviceability guidelines (1993 AASHTO Design Guide). In this study, dynamic Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and statistical analysis approaches were used to develop reliable and accurate time-dependent roughness (International Roughness Index, IRI) prediction models for the newly constructed Kansas Jointed Plain Concrete Pavements (JPCP). To achieve this objective, data used in the model development process include construction and materials data as well as other inventory items, such as, traffic and climatic related data, which reflect the section-specific local conditions in Kansas.

Book Measuring Characterizing and Reporting Pavement Roughness of Low speed and Urban Roads

Download or read book Measuring Characterizing and Reporting Pavement Roughness of Low speed and Urban Roads written by Steven M. Karamihas and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pavement smoothness (or roughness) is used by state highway agencies for monitoring network condition and other purposes such as assessing construction quality and optimizing investments in preservation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. States are also required to report the International Roughness Index (IRI) as an element of the federal Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS). Because IRI is not measured directly but is calculated as the mechanical response of a generic quarter-car, traveling at 50 mph, to the elevation profile of the roadway, there are concerns about using current practices for estimating roughness of low-speed and urban roads. Because of the unique features of low-speed and urban roads, research was needed to identify or, if necessary, develop means for appropriately measuring, characterizing and reporting pavement roughness of these roads. National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Research Report 914: Measuring, Characterizing, and Reporting Pavement Roughness of Low-Speed and Urban Roads reviews the practices for roughness measurement and the unique features of urban and low-speed roadways, and it evaluates the use of existing inertial profilers for such measurements. The report also proposes revisions to American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials standard specifications and practices addressing inertial profiler certification and operations.

Book Use of Falling Weight Deflectometer Data for Assessing Pavement Structural Evaluation Values

Download or read book Use of Falling Weight Deflectometer Data for Assessing Pavement Structural Evaluation Values written by Tanveer Chowdhury and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural evaluation can be very useful at the network level for project prioritization purposes. In the project priority ranking procedure of the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), a pavement rating attribute, Pavement Structural Evaluation (PSE), is used. These ratings are subjective. his study outlines an approach based on the classical multiple regression analysis resulting in a better estimation of the PSE values using the results from the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests and network-level distress survey. The regression models proposed in this study predict the decrease in PSE values by taking into account the FWD data, age, thickness, and distress levels of pavements, and very closely approximate the current PSE ratings obtained at the district level.
