Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known by its scientific name, Opheodrys aestivus, the Rough Green Snake is a non-venomous snake native to the southeastern United States. Some facts and features about the Rough Green Snake are listed below. - Rough Green Snakes are slim and a vibrant green, allowing them to disappear into the surrounding flora. The underside of their bellies are normally white or golden. The name comes from the slightly abrasive feel that their scales provide. - Adult Rough Green Snakes are normally between 20 and 32 inches (50 and 80 cm) in length. - These snakes prefer grassy and woody environments, such as gardens, meadows, and forests. They prefer to spend most of their time in trees and plants, making them arboreal. - Rough Green Snakes are known to be docile and peaceful creatures. They are largely insectivorous, eating on a diet of insects, spiders, and other tiny invertebrates. They won't harm humans intentionally and won't harm humans accidentally either. - Females deposit eggs, usually between three and twelve of them, in a secret spot like rotting wood or leaf litter. After a few weeks, the eggs hatch, and the baby snakes can survive on their own. - The Rough Green Snake can be found all the way from the southeastern United States (where it is commonly found) to the eastern seaboard (where it is found in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas). - Rough Green Snakes are numerous across their habitat and are not in danger of extinction at this time. But like many other reptile species, they can be threatened by human actions such as the destruction of their habitat. The Rough Green Snake is an interesting and relatively harmless reptile that helps keep insect populations in check while also standing out for its striking green hue. People in the southeastern United States see it frequently and value it for the ecosystem services it provides.

Book Goethe s Fairy Tale of the Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily

Download or read book Goethe s Fairy Tale of the Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 1979 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1794 Goethe and Schiller were engaged in a correspondence concerning the connection of the human soul with the world of the senses on one hand and with the supersensory on the other. While Schiller approached the question in a philosophical way, Goethe embodied his thoughts in a fantasy entitled The Fairytale of the Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily. In his fantasy, Lily represents the ideal world of the supersensory that is separated from the Green Snake, or the sensory, by a river. The goal is to build a bridge across the river that will connect the sensory and super sensory realms, and thereby establish a new, conscious spiritual awareness. The other characters in the fairytale-the Ferryman, the Old Woman, the Youth, the Will-o'-Wisps and the Old Man with the Lamp represent various aspects of the soul working together to accomplish this mighty task. A commentary on The Character of Goethe as shown in the Fairy Story is provided by Rudolf Steiner, the Austrian philosopher and thinker. An invaluable guide, it illuminates much of the deep symbology that is contained in this simple, universal fairytale.

Book The Snake and the Salamander

Download or read book The Snake and the Salamander written by Alvin R. Breisch and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated tour of the region’s snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, and salamanders. Winner of the National Outdoor Book Award of the NOBA Foundation (Nature and Environment Category) In the best tradition of natural history writing and art, The Snake and the Salamander explores the diverse collection of reptiles and amphibians that inhabit the northeastern quadrant of the United States. Covering 13 states that run from Maine to Virginia, author Alvin R. Breisch and artist Matt Patterson showcase the lives of 83 species of snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, and salamanders. These intriguing animals are organized by habitat and type, from forest to grassland to bogs to big waters, and revealed through a combination of Breisch’s engaging prose and Patterson’s original color illustrations. Breisch’s guided tour combines historical notes and conservation issues with lessons on genetics, evolution, habitats, life histories, and more. Discover how careful attention to frog calls coupled with DNA analysis led to the discovery of a new species of frog in New York City, why evolutionary adaptations made the Eastern Ratsnake a superb climber, and the surprising fact that Spiny Softshell turtles actually sprint on land to retreat from predators. Breisch also tells the odd tale of the Green Frog and the Smooth Greensnake, two “green species” that do not actually have any green pigment in their skin. Every species has a story to tell—one that will keep the reader wanting to learn more. The breadth of herpetofauna in the area will surprise many readers: more than 8% of the world’s salamanders and 11% of all turtle species live in the region. Beyond numbers, however, lie aesthetics. The surprising colors and fascinating lifestyles of the reptile and amphibian species in this book will mesmerize readers young and old.
