Book The Response to Exploitation of Rotorua Geothermal Field

Download or read book The Response to Exploitation of Rotorua Geothermal Field written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concern about possible decline in Whakarewarewa spring activity led to the creation of the rotorua Monitoring Program and the rotorua Task Force. Both will shortly issue their final reports (Ministry of Energy 1985a, b). Under the Monitoring Program a considerable database was collected about aquifer, well and spring behavior. From this it has been concluded that exploitation has had the following effects: (1) geothermal aquifer pressures have fallen by up to 0.5 bar; geothermal aquifer pressures beneath Whakarewarewa have fallen by about 0.2 bar; and (3) geothermal flow from Whakarewarewa has been reduced by about half. The effects on the springs could be reduced by reducing withdrawal particularly near Whaka, reinjection (including the use of downhole heat exchangers), or a combination of these.

Book The Geoheritage of Hot Springs

Download or read book The Geoheritage of Hot Springs written by Patricia Erfurt and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-24 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide an overview of topics related to the extensive geoheritage of hot springs, their natural environments, and their integration into commercial and industrial functions. The eleven chapters explore aspects of historical and cultural traditions, geology and geochemistry, research updates, conservation issues and of course health, wellness, and recreation throughout time. Because natural hot springs and active hydrothermal areas play a significant role in the tourism industry, visitor expectations are examined together with an assessment of common hazards and potential risks in active hydrothermal environments, along with recommendations how to stay safe. For the purpose of showcasing certain unique features, to share noteworthy events and developments or to identify concerns associated with the sustainability of natural water source, examples of particular hot spring areas are included in several chapters. One chapter is also dedicated entirely to the protection of natural hot springs and raises awareness for conservation, while another chapter reviews the history of hot springs in great detail to establish a realistic and justifiable timeline of their original use. Lastly, the significance of natural hot springs for various tourism sectors is analysed and the potential for sustainable future destination development in rural and remote regions is discussed. Many locations were considered and invite the reader to use the information as a reference point in the quest to further explore the remarkable natural and cultural geoheritage of hot springs worldwide.

Book Groundwaters of New Zealand

Download or read book Groundwaters of New Zealand written by Michael R. Rosen and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwaters of New Zealand is the definitive new source for information on the groundwater resources of New Zealand. Written by many of New Zealand's leading experts, the book covers varied aspects of groundwater research, assessment, use, and management in New Zealand. This book is divided into two parts. The first part documents the history of groundwater development in New Zealand, and current research on interactions between groundwater systems and other components of the hydrological cycle such as health, processes (recharge and groundwater-surface water interaction) and techniques (isotopic methods). The second part of the book provides up-to-date regional summaries of groundwater resources and quality in every region of the country. Groundwater quality is explored in chapters on groundwater chemistry and microbiology, and the health aspects of groundwater. The book also contains detailed regional summaries, covering the location, use, quality, and management of groundwater resources, for the entire country. This book will be the essential reference text for all environmental, engineering, and resource management professionals working with groundwater, and students of the many scientific and engineering disciplines that contribute to groundwater investigations. Many groundwater users, both practicing and in school will find this book a valuable reference that adds significantly to their understanding of groundwater resources.-back cover.
