Book Rotor Burst Protection Program Statistics on Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Rotor Failures that Occurred in U S Commercial Aviation During 1973

Download or read book Rotor Burst Protection Program Statistics on Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Rotor Failures that Occurred in U S Commercial Aviation During 1973 written by R. A. DeLucia and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented in this report are statistics on gas turbine rotor failures that have occurred in U.S. commercial aviation during 1973. These statistics are based on data compiled from the Flight Standards Service Difficulty Reports (SDR) that were published by the Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The compiled data were analyzed to establish: (1) the incidence of rotor failures and the number of contained and uncontained rotor bursts; (2) the distribution of rotor bursts with respect to engine rotor component--i.e., fan, compressor or turbine; (3) the type of rotor fragment (disk, rim or blade) typically generated at burst; (4) the cause of failure; (5) the type of engines involved; and (6) the flight condition at the time of failure. It appears that causes beyond the control or scope of present technology, such as F.O.D., structural life and integrity prediction, and secondary effects, are still primarily responsible for most of the rotor failures that occur.

Book excerpt: This report has been prepared as part of the Rotor Burst Protection Program (RBPP), which is sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and conducted by the Naval Air Propulsion Test Center (NAPTC). The objective of the RBPP is to develop criteria for the design of devices that will be used on aircraft to protect passengers and the aircraft structure from the lethal and devastating fragments that are generated by gas turbine engine rotor bursts. Presented in this report are statistics on gas turbine rotor failures that have occurred in U.S. commercial aviation during 1975. These statistics are based on data compiled from the Flight Standards Service Difficulty Reports (SDR) that were published by the Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Book Rotor Burst Protection Program Statistics on Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Rotor Failures that Occurred in U S Commercial Aviation During 1972

Download or read book Rotor Burst Protection Program Statistics on Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Rotor Failures that Occurred in U S Commercial Aviation During 1972 written by G. J. Mangano and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents statistical information on the aircraft gas turbine engine rotor failures that occurred in U.S. commercial aviation during 1972. Based on FAA data, results are presented that establish (1) the incidence of rotor failure, (2) the type of fragments generated, (3) whether or not these fragments were contained, (4) the causes of failure, (5) where in the engine failure occurred, (6) what engines were affected and (7) what flight conditions prevailed at failure. The rate of uncontained rotor burst was considered to be significantly high. Blade fragments were generated in 95% of the rotor bursts, 20% of which were uncontained. Although fewer disk and rim fragment bursts occurred, none were contained. (Author).

Book ROTOR BURST PROTECTION PROGRAM

Download or read book ROTOR BURST PROTECTION PROGRAM written by A. A. Martino and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NASA-sponsored Rotor Burst Protection Program reports its continuing study into the kinetics of intentionally failed rotors within fragment control systems and the influence of certain important system parameters on the containment/control process. High-speed photographs have recorded the complex action of bladed rotors which more closely approximate realistic turbomachinery operating conditions than did the earlier RBPP testing. The test observations should assist the containment design engineer. A survey of uncontained failures occurring in U.S. Commercial and Naval aviation experience is reported. A detailed study of commercial and military specifications regarding rotor integrity substantiation and containment criteria is presented. (Author).

Book Rotor Burst Protection Program Statistics on Aircraft Gas Turbine Engine Failures That Occurred in Commercial Aviation During 1971

DeLucia and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents statistical information relating to the number of gas turbine engine rotor failures which occurred during 1971 in commercial aviation service use. The number and types of rotor failures are categorized as contained and uncontained failures. The predominant failure involved blade fragments, 83 percent of which were contained. Although fewer rotor rim and disk failures occurred, all of the disk and 67 percent of the rim failures were uncontained. Design and life prediction problems accounted for almost 40 percent of the failures. (Author).

Book Rotor Burst Protection Program Experimentation to Provide Guidelines for the Design of Turbine Rotor Burst Fragment Containment Rings

Download or read book Rotor Burst Protection Program Experimentation to Provide Guidelines for the Design of Turbine Rotor Burst Fragment Containment Rings written by G. J. Mangano and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented are the results of a program of rotor burst containment experimentation that provides guidelines for the design of optimum weight turbine rotor disk fragment containment rings. These guidelines were derived by establishing the relationships between a measure of the ring's capability to contain fragment energy with respect to it's weight (the specific contained fragment energy - SCFE - derived by dividing the rotor burst energy by the weight of ring required to contain this energy) and other significant ring and rotor variables such as the: rotor tip diameter; number of rotor fragments; and ring radial thickness and axial length. The experiments consisted mainly of bursting 14 and 31 inch diameter turbine rotors into encircling containment rings made from centrifugally cast 4130 steel. Rules are given for achieving optimum weight ring designs. (Author).

Book Rotor Burst Protection Program Initial Test Results

Download or read book Rotor Burst Protection Program Initial Test Results written by Albert A. Martino and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NASA sponsored Rotor Burst Protection program has produced the first high speed photographic sequence of an intentionally failed rotor within a containment device. This technical achievement has provided a means to study the fragment-containment system kinematics and material performance associated with disk and blade failures. The results of the first twenty-one tests provide data that can assist in establishing basic guidelines for the design of containment systems. Experiments providing information relative to the complex motion of disk and blade fragments for a failed rotor, and the effects of radial clearance, stress concentration, and material properties are reported. The theoretical derivation and related curves for the energy distribution of fragments from a rotating flat disk provide the total, translational, and rotational kinetic energy per fragment for combinations of fragment included angle and radius ratio are presented. A survey of uncontained failures occurring in U.S. Commercial and Naval aviation experience is reported. Test equipment and techniques are discussed. (Author).

Book Rotor Fragment Protection Program Experimentation to Provide Guidelines for the Design of Turbine Rotor Fragment Containment Rings

Download or read book Rotor Fragment Protection Program Experimentation to Provide Guidelines for the Design of Turbine Rotor Fragment Containment Rings written by J. T. Salvino and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program objective is to develop guidelines for the design of optimum weight containment rings for turbine engine rotor fragments. Rotor/disk and blade containment experiments were conducted using strain gage instrumented containment rings. The tests were conducted to study, by means of high-speed photography and strain measurements, the interaction that takes place between the rotor fragments and containment ring during the containment process. The recorded information was supplied for use in the TEJ-2 or CIVM JET-4B computer programs which are being developed for use in the optimum design of containment/deflection devices. The characterization of blade and rotor fragment behavior and containment ring response was made possible by photographing blades and rotors intentionally modified to fail at their design operating speed.
